Heresy of marcionism www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/marcionism
@simonwesteng361015 сағат бұрын
Yes, it does sound like the pope and his followers have swallowed a variant of Marcion's heresy. As for Marcion's own notion, this is an unforgivable betrayal of the God of the Bible. But it does makes you wander: how could the early Church ever even entertain such a notion! Alas, I have good reason to believe that the Church did in fact swallow a variant of Mani's heresy in the days of saint Augustine, thus corrupting Catholic eschatological teaching ever since. For Augustine, who was battling the heretics with much apologetic treatises (must of which was subsequently adopted into Church doctrine), seemed to have fallen back on Manichaeistic notions in his fight against the Chiliasts, presenting his personal interpretations of Revelation chapter 20 (which, if I may say, is fundamentally flawed). As a result, the Church ever since has stuck firmly to the belief that the Reign and Millennial have been with the Church "in mystery" since the start. Alas, nothing could be further from the truth! As for all those Protestant Chiliasts: they too are very much mistaken. But take heart, `catholicman`, for the good God of the Bible has everything in hand for those who humbly submit to His infallible Word.

Studying ,by heart, the "penny catechism" in 1961 at St. Mary and John 's Catholic School Wolverhampton, first thing by rote Why did God make you? "God made me to know Him,to Love Him and to Serve Him in this life and to be happy with Him in the next"! We also learnt that God's love for mankind, also called God's charity was so great that He died for us on the cross, for which we thanked him everyday especially at Mass and Benediction especially in Sunday's and Holydays of obligations! A full two years BEFORE we had our first(not our last) confession and Holy Communion! Thanks be to God I received my instruction prior to Vatican II ! The words of the old hymn come to mind "When wicked men blaspheme Thee, We'll Love and praise Th y name!" Seems like this priest is out for preferent! To quite another song,The Vicar of Bray "In good King Charlie's golden days when Royalty no harm ment! A serious high Churchman was I and so I got preferment! " Seems like your priest doffs his beretta at the altar of King Bergolio! Lots of love from Wolverhampton. St Thomas More and St Edmund Campion and St Thomas a Becket pray for us!

I am relieved to see, in many of the comments, that I was not the only soul surprised at the priest's recollections and the conclusions he rests upon them. The spirit, or rather the 'vibe', that comes to me from the kindly, well-intended priest is not the Holy Ghost, at work in faith, hope, and .. erm .. charity, but the 'spirit of '68' that kinda folksy faux-ethnic gnosticism so beloved of the liberated mindset, all James Joyce, Teilhard de Chardin, sentimental Socialism, and diehard (Irish-flavoured) Rebellionism. A kind of 'Come-All-Ye .. Hail! Me Hearties give uz a Ballad to Che Guevara and the Bold Freedom Fighter Men!' pub routine, great as a rabble-rouser pre- and post- Hurling match beverage-downer, but not exactly historical or even real, a Saga retold rather than Faith recounted (naturally so, for a quick Hail Mary! in game may get an unexpected goal, but a baleful sermon on the benefits of Presidential Monarchy - US of A style - is not quite the stuff to give the troops). So thank the good Lord, Christ is King in the Kingdom of Heaven and its rule reaches into the very heart and soul, thought and sinew of Mankind, being here and now in our midst - like it or not and moreover willy nilly. Right, lads .. on yer feet, chest deep, and give it your all .. to the tune of Sawston .. you all know the words (and let hell be damned): KZbin - Faith of our Fathers - music from 1864 HYmnal - words F W Faber - tune Sawston kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2a2doWeZdpgfrc And do thank that Father in the Gospel, assure him that he can have his version of 'God' - but I am a soldier of the Lord our God, and Heaven's is the Kingdom I serve in love, with my whole heart, and with my whole soul, and with all my strength, and with all my mind: and my neighbour as myself .. just as the Catholic Faith so teaches, even today. Keep the Faith; tell the truth, shame the devil, and let the demons shriek. God bless. ;o)

So... He introduces the idea that kings are an outdated novelty and then infers that Jesus being a king must also be a man-made novelty? Then comes the False Choice from him that one must choose either, for example, God the Son (baby born in the manger or otherwise) or God as Almighty God? In Jn 18:36-37 Jesus showed He is a king. Jesus' words in Mt 22:7 also refute what he says, as do Mt 7:13-14. In the end, he ignored that Jesus came to reconcile the world to God, and ignored Jesus also recognized the legitimacy of the strict austerity of John the Baptist's ministry which immediately preceded His, given His words in Mt 11:17. So love isn't mentioned in the old catchechism? What next will Fr Hoban say, that love is love?

Am saving this to read later. The Act of Charity as we learnt by heart, now about 60 years ago, the last final line was one loving ones neighbour as myself. You could hardly love ir impart love to anyone else if love for ineself wasnt there.

Whenever I hear the dichotomy of “God of the Old Testament vs God of the New Testament” I am reminded of the old Cathar belief of the god of the material world vs god of the spiritual and that these are two separate entities at war with each other. They did refer to these two entities as old and new Testament gods. I can understand that this is probably not necessarily a conscious belief among modern Catholics but I do note this theological posture in the way many priests and theologians talk about God in the contemporary church.

Cardinal Fernandez, Prefect of the Holy Office, has explained the choice which Catholics must make. There is the dry and dusty “Theology of Tradition” (otherwise known as “The Catholic Faith”) and there is the new and improved “Theology of Francis”. Cardinal Fernandez is cautious. He explains that nothing all which the Pope might say or do is to be considered definitive in terms of faith and morals. So, officially, on paper, the Pope still holds and teaches the Catholic Faith, which comes to us from the Apostles, since he has not defined anything at all during his Pontificate which might alter the true teaching of the Church. Even though he has changed the Catechism so that it no longer teaches what the Church teaches on the death penalty, this is not in any way binding on Catholics, since the informal action of a Pope can never override the teaching of Sacred Scripture or of an Ecumenical Council of the Church. However, President Biden, following the approach taken by the Pope, has commuted almost all of the death sentences of those on death row in Federal prisons to life imprisonment. This is a dangerous, and unjust, attempt by the Pope to alter the practice of Catholics who find themselves in positions of authority. The reason for this is that those in death row in State prisons in the USA where there is not a Catholic Governor, or where there is a Catholic Governor still true to the Faith, will be executed, while those in Federal prisons, possibly convicted of far more serious offences, will not be executed, all because the Pope says that the death penalty is never permissible. So, what the Pope says, informally, and in a non binding way (as Cardinal Fernandez explains) can do a great deal of harm. Those who wish to secure preferment and advancement in the Church of today must abandon the Faith and embrace, enthusiastically, the new “Theology of Francis” - a Theology which is warm, cuddly and woke - all religions are a way to find God, there is no literal Hell, or, if there is, no one will ever actually end up there, divorce and remarriage (rebranded as “annulment” and remarriage) is now permissible - two men may “marry” according to the civil law and commit sodomy with the full blessing and approval of the Church. A Priest may rape nuns and be expelled from the Society of Jesus but installed at the personal insistence of the Pope as a Parish Priest.

Well I've just gone looking for the number of times Jesus referred directly or indirectly. It's strange: this guy says the opposite of my previous post-- that in fact He referred more often to Heaven!! There must be some -- several -- definitive studies but I'm just going by this: "I have heard it said by some very well-known preachers that Jesus spoke more about Hell than He did about Heaven but what are the facts? As a young minister, I had heard this so-called fact repeated many times but every time I heard it repeated something didn’t sit right with me. Many years ago, I decided to do some research to find out for myself if this was true. What I discovered was there are 1900 plus verses in the four Gospels that contain Jesus’ words. Surprisingly, only about 60 of those verses, or just three percent of them, might be construed as either directly or indirectly referring to Hell. On the other hand, there are more than three times as many verses in the Gospels in which Jesus references Heaven, eternal life, or his coming kingdom: 192 verses in all, or almost 10%. So, the evidence suggests that Jesus didn’t speak about Hell more than Heaven. In truth, he talked about Heaven three times more than He did about Hell!" medium.com/@edelliott/did-jesus-talk-more-about-hell-than-he-did-heaven-7e6100b4df82

It particularly wanted to remind us that it is God's rights and not the 'rights of man' as declared in the French revolution, which are supreme. Think of all the misery that could have been avoided down through history if nations as well as individuals recognised this and lived accordingly.

Does the priest in question even know that he is preaching Marcionism, a Christian heresy that emerged in the early 2nd century, founded by Marcion of Sinope. Marcion proposed a radical dualism between the God of the Old Testament, whom he viewed as a vengeful and wrathful deity, and the God of the New Testament, who is loving and merciful. He rejected the Hebrew Scriptures and believed that Jesus Christ came to reveal the true God, distinct from the creator God of Judaism. Marcion created his own canon of scripture, which included an edited version of the Gospel of Luke and ten of Paul's epistles, excluding any references to the Old Testament. His teachings were considered heretical by early church leaders, who affirmed the continuity of the Old and New Testaments and the unified nature of God.

Hello all and Happy New Year! I totally get that Christ’s Kingdom is not of this world - and so much superior. That said I also think that monarchy is the natural form of government and that had most of the European countries not become republics or monarchies in name only we would be in a much better place. I wish that when becoming independent Ireland had chosen this form of government and crowned a new Brian Boru. Maybe I am a dreamer but these are my thoughts nevertheless , republicanism whether French or Irish or else doesn’t bring any good. So the premises of the cleric’s arguments are already false in my opinion.

Another old hippie Robert. Please pray for him but also ignore what he says.

Many of those priests are old hippies and of their generation. A new generation is coming up who have returned to the traditional teaching of the Church

Robert please reply to the Western People on just that single point of misinformation alone, for the sake of the readers. Thank you

Indeed. Otherwise people will take this priest's comment as "gospel".

Fr.Hoban knows a lot more about theology than all ye critics put together.

I’ve know many priests who knew a lot about theology but very little about God. Pray for him.

Sadly ignorance hasn’t been bliss in this diocese. It has destroyed the faith

I've only got two eyes and see very little. But what I do see is an attempt to shift the spiritual purpose of the gospel to attain temporal ends. Amd this is dividing the Church, at least online. At mass everyone seems pretty united. On the side of the Pope, you seem to have the idea that the Church is open to all and that no matter your sin, you should come in. This is not without precedent. On the other hand, you have the very coservative elements, who seem to be playing a double game. They seem to cozy up to very wealthy donors and work in the political sphere to advance economic policies pernicious to the poor because they give greater power and wealth to the economic elites amd take it away from the poor by channeling their frustration at the ever widening wealth gap into a culture war. They direct the frustration of the havenots toward political ends that only further push them into havenotterry. This seems to be what the 'alt-right' is doing. Don't get me wrong, I love Latin amd the traditional chants and hymns. I love reading the Gospel, the Church Fathers, the Desert Fathers, all the Doctors of the Church, and so on. I engage in contemplative prayer. I do my best to love God and neighbor. I ora et labora. I think I'm mostly Catholicing right, but man, there is trouble brewing and greed and duplicity seem to be a part of it

Fr's writing is NOT an invention. Call it what it really is: a downright lie. Pray for priests.

This man is trying to bring back the Marcionite heresy and should be at least suspended from ministry.
