Like you Tony, I'd buy at a push but growing our own makes you realise what value we currently get for little outlay. I calculated we've grown £600+ worth of organic veg and fruit in 2024 on a full size allotment for our annual rental of approx £80. The Big value is in the raspberries redcurrants, gooseberries and blackberries. The staples of beets, beans, , potatoes and onions a godsend.

Interesting video thank you. Wonky carrots wouldn’t bother me personally. It’s a tragedy how much is wasted due to the supermarkets demanding a certain size and shape and low price point that our farmers are struggling. You get what you pay for I’m afraid and I am fortunate to be able to grow a lot of my own but where i can i support local growers and try to buy organic.

I buy from river ford on occasion as the budget allows. Tends to be the things I can't grow and want to preserve. The sizes are variable as they don't waste food the same way big supermarkets do with only allowing the biggest straightness through. The flavour is just like out of the garden and the customer service is brilliant. Their kits are good too so you can try things that you haven't made before.

I tend to top up what we grow with Riverford organics. Obviously this time of year, we buy more from them and maybe only once a month in summer. Really rate them.

Riverford are a great company, I think’Which’ magazine quite recently rated them top of the veg boxes. I use to have one delivered about once every two weeks, but I just couldn’t afford it anymore, but I do appreciate why it costs what it does. I’m 73, finding it awkward to grow what I need. The amount of plastic I end up with from the supermarkets is awful and really bothers me. I’m torn between cost but wanting to be ethical and eat nourishing, wholesome food!

Hi Tony, We've used Riverford for a few years now and they're great! some unusual veg that you can't find in the shops. Yes, it's more expensive but worth it.

The very reason I grow my own, organic vegetables and fruit. Thought as a allotment grower you wouldn't be worried about shape or size, signs of pest damage is more my problem from my garden!!!

I have a riverford delivery most weeks. Usually veg or fruit that I can’t grow on the allotment at the time of year. I prefer to buy organic produce. Riverford appear to have good ethical values and support British farmers.

Bought Riverford for years to top up what I grow. Couldn’t fault them, gorgeous produce and very ethical employee owned company. A bit pricey but there is no comparison with the tasteless stuff from supermarkets.

Australia wastes so much because supermarkets only buy the most perfect vegetables to sell. Who cares if they’re not perfect if it brings the price down. We are able to buy bags of veg called the odd bunch..which are imperfect veg but they’re not much cheaper or different. I think most people would prefer to go to markets and buy their veg if they have one locally. Unfortunately I don’t 😢 Dumping imperfect veg to me is a crime when so many are struggling. You might enjoy your haul so much it’ll become a regular order. If I could afford it I’d be tempted that’s for sure.

The labour costs in the UK are higher than other places...and organic uses more labour. Also what's the flavour like? Carrots from major cheap chains have no flavour and go mushy in days.....you get what you pay for.

For comparison organic veg in the US those prices are pretty good to really good. Assuming my kg to pounds and pounds sterling to dollars mental conversions are correct. If you want to try again, focus on the Dirty Dozen so you're getting the maximum benefit for the cost. I know you weren't thrilled with the look of the carrots. We had a similar service here that offered small/large boxes, organic/conventional but they focused on 'imperfect' produce. Rescued so it wasn't disposed of. Odd sizes, minor blemishes but really it was fine and it felt great that good food wasn't going to the trash. They added a juicing box that was even more imperfect but the veg was tailored to juicing. Perhaps there's something like that available to you now that it's on your radar. If they're sound and fresh it may be more cost effective for you. Anyway, hope you enjoy it and have a great new year.

Before I had an allotment i used riverford. Useful if you don't have space to grow or only have supermarket delivery if housebound, because the supermarket veg i have had delivered is awful from supermarkets, bothborganic and general, all old and the stuff that looks like it should have been chucked away. You used to be able to get a juicing box which was cheaper from riverford.

I'm reeling at £7.20 for apples. At this time of year, they should be cheaper than chips - even if they're organic! I really must start using all the apples from our trees. The squirrels and birds got most of them. I'd rather just eat the fruit, but the only beetroot I like is pickled. No-one else in the house will eat it. We do usually buy organic carrots, but if I have to choose non-organic, carrots are on the list. I don't mind wonky carrots, but I once had carrots with a meal in a place in Ayrshire that was attached to a farm. The chunks were at least two inches in diameter and a whole carrot must have been at least a foot long - I think I got about half a carrot in three chunks. I would LOVE to grow those. Ayrshire's known for tatties and dairy, but those carrots were amazing.

Here in Ontario Canada there's a grocery store called NO FRILLS. They have started selling the unpurfect veg n fruits honestly I have not found any issues with these like I could by a ten pound bag of potatoes for $2.55 a bag where the same size bag of the perfect potato are between $5-7 dollars per bag. I like the funky type of veg lol.

Riverford are employee owned and pay and support their farmers fairly. Happy customer here but for their ethics as well as their produce. With the current debate for supporting British farmers organic or not that comes at a price not paid by the supermarkets to support farmers fairly. Riverford also take crops regardless of quality etc and still pay what was agreed. Pretty sure a couple of years ago they had a farmers crop let down and as customers we had options to buy to donate the food and to ensure the farmer was paid for the lack of support from the original buyer. In my opinion they give easy access to great products and support British farming fantastically.

I don't think that's a bad deal Tony, although if you were to work it out monthly, that's approx £80,not too bad if you think of the health prospects of juicing 😊

OK they are a lot more expensive than the post-Christmas bargain bins, but nobody in the supply chain is getting rich on the proceeds! I think it's a fair price for ethically sourced, organic, traceable and healthy produce. I'm still too mean to buy them though.

Organic or not I would never pay those prices, you can't go wrong with Morrisons. Their wonky range is just as good as what you have there and at a fraction of the price. All the fruit and veg we buy from there keeps for ages in the fridge. We have no choice now as I am now bed bound and hubby is no gardener. Out of all the supermarkets Morrison's comes out top of the lot

Riverford are pushing for best price for farmers, they are employee owned and are based around good ethics. I am a happy customer of years. This metic of how big or straight produce is is part of the supermarket conditioning of generations over the years, it doesn’t bother me, they eat the same and I am receiving the same amount by weight. Be more Jessie and cut the bad bit off the tomatoes and eat the rest. We can easily grow enough food in this country to feed ourselves, big supermarkets have just conditioned people to buy what they want to sell us and sod the ethics behind it all! Rant over.
