There's an ice cream truck that drives by my house daily blasting Daisy Bell/A Bicycle Built For Two through a broken horn speaker. I'm a young guy but I've hung around old timers so long (because of amateur radio and antique electronics) that I picked up a few of these through osmosis. Thanks for sharing the wisdom, progress really is a double-edged sword. 73.

Also I remember when I was a kid in Detroit mowing the grass with a rotary lawn mower. The milkman delivering milk and putting it in the little door on the porch, Also When we moved to Jax. Fl. their used to be this old black guy that had a cart that was pulled by an Ox that sold rags and veggies. He used to holler ragman get your clean rags and fresh vegetables. 73 Lawrence, KF4HNF

This really made me laugh. I guess I'm an old-timer. I remember those elevator operators. Sometimes it took them three tries to finally level up. All the while, old ladies on the elevator clicked their tongues in disapproval. "Honestly!" , they'd sometimes say in the direction of the operator. Both you & Mr. Dillon are looking good! And thanks for the laughs.

when I was a kid in the 60's in Northern California, we would visit relatives in Panorama City, and of course Disneyland. My mom grabbed a semi rolled up tube of Brylcreem from the Dopp kit to brush her teeth. Only the "eem" of the lettering was exposed and she thought it was "Gleem" toothpaste! We kids thought that was hilarious as she spit it all out. I guess those brand names make me an old timer too! Nice violin tone there....tonight I play in the orchestra (trombone) with a bunch of college kids and a bunch of us old timers!

Beautiful tone from your violin. I am an “old timer” as I’ve been in the hobby for several decades, even though I’m not yet chronologically old. I’m also apparently an old timer because I was singing the lyrics to “Bicycle Made For Two” in my head, and also remember movie projectionists, as I was one. I grew up with all the advances of post-war society, and came of age in the internet age. I have seen the changes in society and technology, both positive and negative. It’s up to us as old timers to offer advice snd guide those younger than us, and it’s a responsibility that I accept with honor, as evidently, do you.

made me laugh... Take my wife.... I actually said "please" at the same moment you said it! I remember the blocks of ice being delivered by horse and cart to the English pubs over here first thing in the morning... so that probably counts me in...

Yes, and: 1) A rotary dial phone where your chances were always highest dialing the LAST number WRONG.. 2) You lowered your car windows with a hand crank and most front windows had a side vent to blow some air around since car AC was RARE once it was finally available.. 3) Sending a Western Union Telegram concerning good or bad news. 4) Kids, playing outside after school EVERY Sunny Day. 5) The city you lived in had only 3 channels and they had the good sense to go OFF THE AIR at midnight so their employes and society in general would go to sleep. 6) Watching the Lone Ranger Saturday morning; Kemosabe !! 7) And if you know who said, "How Sweet It Is." (Hint, He played in Smokey and The Bandit as Buford T. Justice. MUCH LATER) Maybe we are old poots but we have some great memories and drinking out of those garden hoses is what added years to our lives...LOL!!

I don't remember humming that tune but everything else sounds right. How about when everything was designed to be repairable and parts were readily available?

I remember most of those things. But I was just a kid at the time. The poor Adore man had to bring our milk and eggs up a long, steep, bumpy, and rutted dirt road to our home. It's a wonder that most of his milk wasn't churned into butter by the time he arrived! But he was there every week, rain or shine. It wasn't a good time for me. Jimmy (the peanut farmer) Carter had driven our economy into stagflation. My mom wouldn't come to the door. She sent me at a tender age of only 10 or so to run interference because we couldn't afford to pay the tab. I really felt bad for the guy. Even then I knew that things weren't right. Kind of what President Biden is doing to our county now. The Fuller Brush man came by once in a while too. I really liked that guy. I can still remember his face. You may not like hearing this, but when I was a kid I had a .22 rifle and no one cared. It never ever ever ever entered my mind that I should go and kill my classmates because I was mistreated in some way. Something has changed in society. And it's not for the best. Those were the days when you called the TV repair man to come to your home to fix the TV when it died. The guy would come, pull the back off of the set and fix it.. Amazing! I'd watch and learn. Once he asked me if I knew what was wrong. I was going to say that the power transformer was shot. But I was too shy and I just stood there and shook my head. And that was exactly what the problem was! Can you imagine how shocked he would have been if a ten year old kid had spoken up and made the diagnosis? To this day I regret not speaking up. Hey, remember when we turned off the black and white TV and stood there transfixed waiting for that little dot to disappear from the screen?

Hi, Erik Thank you for the very first comment. No, I don't mind hearing that. I had a 22 rifle too. Society has certainly changed, not for the better. We are headed for an indoor, digital life style. Physical work and self reliance are obsolete. Take care.
