I understand! Each new Beatles’ album would find me on the living room carpet holding the album in my hand. Even at my young age, I was SO aware that there was the second before I tore off the plastic and the second afterwards. I knew that once that plastic came off, and I put the record on the turntable, my life would never be the same…. And that went for each Beatles’ album…. 💕

I remember the exact time I heard this album. I was babysitting, and just before they left, the parents suggested I listen to the entire album in one go after the kids were asleep. I did. By the time they got home, I was on my fourth listen. It was incredible. I went out and bought my own copy with the money I earned that evening and listened to it as often as I could. Good story! There is so much meat on those bones, isn't there? Fifty-eight years after it's release, when I listen to it, I still can't quite wrap my head about what's coming up. A rocker? Nice. Who's that, Ringo? Already? What a song they gave him! Nice high note on the end, Ring! What's that, a harpsichord? Getting better? What a happy song. Next....sounds like the Addams Family opener. And now, I'm at the circus! Whoa! Record stopped? FLIP IT OVER! Where are we, India? And so on, so.on.

Actually, the '60s were a decade of creativity trying to make up for the stuffiness of the '50s! If The Beatles have come along earlier Paul would have had a great time making more Gershwin type music and probably would have been huge but wouldn't have changed the world by any means. It's hard to say what it would have been like if they came along later, because they wouldn't have had the Beatles to build on like everyone else did!

In June 1967, my dad took me to the record store so I could buy Sgt. Pepper's LHCB, which had just been released. On the way home I laid down in the back of our station wagon, opened it and starting pouring over the liner notes and lyrics (which were printed on the back cover album jacket). My first thought was, "Okay, this is VERY different!" Once I got home and put on the record, it hit me that this was a turning point for the Beatles -- really for music. How else could a 10-year-old comprehend what he was hearing? "Okay, this is VERY bizarre." After all these years, there is still some new surprise each time you play it. I spun it probably a dozen times that first day -- over and over, stopping on each song, reading the lyrics, starting and stopping...Skipping past "Within You Without You" after one pass (what the hell was that I just listened to?) Only years later would I come to realize its genius. The Beatles constantly elevated the bar over which no one else could jump.

I too was born in 57, my older sister sat in her bedroom with an earphone in one ear and wrote down the lyrics of those new releases as they came out on AM radio, and eschewed by "FM" which was entirely focused on "classical music" the sort my dad claimed was the "only real music". I grew up immersed in the music of the 60's and 70's and still the best to this day in my opinion.

My aunt (my mom's oldest sister, eighteen years older than my mother) bought me "Meet the Beatles" when it was released, as a belated Christmas gift, I wasn't even one year old yet ... that was all I needed ... not only did I become a Beatles FANATIC, I turned my oldest son into one, as well ... this past July, I finally made my pilgrimage to Strawberry Fields and the Dakota in Manhattan ... Meanwhile, my wife and I are BIG fans of the Fab Faux (helps that Jack Petruzzelli graduated from East Brunswick (NJ) High School with my wife, a year after I graduated ... and Jack's rendition of "Oh Darling", in my mind, outdoes Sir Paul EVERY TIME!!!) and the Faux pay strict homage to the Beatles' catalogue on a note-by-note basis, so the later works are played live as closely to the recorded renditions as possible ... gives us the best opportunity to experience the Beatles' masterpieces live, even though John & George are gone ... So many people vote "Stairway ..." as the greatest ever, but without the Beatles crashing the party on THIS side of the pond, NOTHING by Led Zeppelin becomes relevant ... If possible, "A Day in the Life" IS GREATER than "just" number one ...

LOVE your channel and appreciate the time you take to make this all work!

I have watched - and greatly enjoyed - many of your videos. Your ability to tell a story that, while it might otherwise be 2 minutes long and rather boring, you make it so very interesting is (in my opinion) second to none. However, this just might be a mic-drop moment - a gripping, 22-minute long history of what many of us believe to be The Beatles greatest song yet so rarely talked about. Thank you so very much for this.

Sgt Pepper's was recorded several months after the 1966 release of Dylan's Blonde on Blonde that opened with Rainy Day Women #12 and 35..with a Salvation Army band playing. Dylan and Lennon shared a taxi cab ride in '66 at the end of Dylan's world tour. A few months later Dylan would have his motorcycle accident and the Beatles would hold their very last concert. The Beatles included Bob on the album cover.

Great video of a great song!!! In my opinion, if one had to pick their one favorite Beatles song, or pick their one greatest song, it would have to be A Day in the Life imho...its their Stairway to Heaven before there was a stairway (another amazing song that wasnt a single) but The Beatles couldnt have picked a more powerful conclusion to their sonic masterpiece of an album...btw, my kids love it too!!!

Once again you really took me away with your enthusiasm, yes, the song is so great and at the same time so different from all the other songs - at least back then and for a long time afterwards. The Beatles again set the bar a little higher with this song (and album!). When I play this song to people who don't know the Beatles very well, they are usually completely stunned. Because you rarely hear the song on the radio (here in Germany), they usually only play the best-known songs, unfortunately. How good that KZbin exists with channels like yours!

Probably one of my favourite song off of Sgt. Pepper. I love the version by Rick Moranis which reverses the musical demeanour with the the main part being done fast and the middle section with Paul being played slow and balladic. I don't know if it is available, but I may take a peak after I send this.

@arizonastrummer9 күн бұрын
Although I had fully enjoyed watching live the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, my first real taste of rock music was BST and Chicago. Had 45's of their hits I would play over and over on my record player. It was years before I really took a deep dive into the Beatles. Oh, and for the comment below, David Clayton Thomas was brilliant. I got to see him solo in a small bar in a hotel in Tucson. It was years after BST disbanded and his voice and professionalism were amazing.

In George Martin’s book “All You Need is Ears” Martin says it was totally John’s idea to do the orchestral crescendo “from the lowest sound to something like the end of the Earth. With a symphonic orchestra.” Only Paul himself contradicts this but George Martin wrote the truth as he was the producer. It was John’s song all the way and John decided to insert Paul’s bridge into his piece. Amazing collaboration between all geniuses involved
@strathman75019 күн бұрын
"It was John’s song all the way" Not according to John. According to John they developed it together, from an original verse idea of his, into something much bigger that he had not envisaged: *"A Day in the Life - that was something. I dug it. It was a good piece of work between Paul and me. Paul and I were definitely working together... we were doing it in his room with the piano. He said 'Should we do this?' 'Yeah, let's do that.' I had the "I read the news today" bit, and it turned Paul on, because now and then we really turn each other on with a bit of song, and he just said "yeah" - bang bang, like that. It just sort of happened beautifully... "* You say that "John decided to insert Paul’s bridge into his piece." That wasn't how it happened, according to John: *"He [Paul] had that beautiful little lick in the song 'I'd love to turn you on' floating around in his head, he couldn't use it for anything, so he stuck it on, and instead of going on and developing that lick into the middle eight which we would normally do we got into 'How about putting [in] a whole different song', which he already had... which is a precursor to Abbey Road style later on... and we arranged it and rehearsed it, which we don't often do, the afternoon before [recording]. So we knew what we were playing."* They already had the cacophanies planned into the song at home, before Take One where you can hear Paul's piano sketching in a rising dissonant crescendo as a placeholder. What they hadn't decided for sure was how to fill that out, and this is where it gets confusing because George Martin told several different stories about who suggested what. In AYNIE he does indeed say he asked John how he imagined it, and John suggested an orchestra going "from nothing to something like ther end of the world." But in 'Summer Of Love' GM tells a more detailed story in which "Paul fancied the idea more than the others...I really was not sure it had been properly thought out but Paul had been listening to a lot of avant garde music... He had told John that he would like to include an instrumental passage with this avant garde feel. He had the idea to create a spiralling ascent of sound, suggesting we start with all instruments on their lowest note and climbing in their own time." Then again, in an interview about Sergeant Pepper available on KZbin, George Martin said that he couldn't really remember whether it was Paul or John who first mentioned the idea to him, but that "probably they both did"! This is all a bit unfortunate, but since we know that they did both originate the basic concept of a crazy crescendo together at home before taking the song into the studio, that last version is possibly as close to the truth as we need to get.

@@strathman7501And you need to get a life, writing all that crap. And Paul said "it was mainly John's song" and "it was already a gorgeous song when John brought it"....that's in Anthology....enough said. John's song all the way is right.

In that book you mentioned All you need is ears,, John told George Martin that the music linking the verses should be orgasmic. It was Paul, who went to George Martin with how the notes should be played and with that Martin wrote down those notes for the Orchestra.
