I think your take on this Peter is balanced, grounded and spot on. Manufacturing is never 100% perfect for any brand. The brands/retailers response to your problem, tells you more about your purchase decision than the product itself. It’s a lovely timepiece and keeping it because you love it, is all that matters.

My Dad being a retired insurance salesman always used to say to me that you never know how good your insurance is until you need to use it, the cheapest ain’t always necessarily the best. Life is never perfect and when things go wrong it’s how things are sorted out and your experience that will skew your views either to the positive or negative. As a few others have said the AD/brand response to the problem says it all really. Personally I have both the BB58 blue and Ranger and I couldn’t be more happier with them. No problems or issues (so far) and would happily have another Tudor if something took my fancy.

Here in London you take your Tudor straight into the Rolex head office building in central west London and they give you the full Rolex service experience. Big flash building fully Rolex'd up in branding and fit-out, they have on-site Rolex watch makers in the back that do the servicing or repairs for you. I have to say it was a wonderful experience for someone who isn't yet a Rolex owner. My BB58 winding mechanism jammed 2 months outside of its warranty period (3.5 years being an early model) and they offered to replace the whole movement free of charge. Couldn't be happier with the whole experience.

To make matters worse, the assistant at the AD who took it in suggested I may have to pay for "wear and tear" even though I'd had it only 10 months and swap it for a beater when I exercise! glad they sorted it out to your satisfaction Peter. mine stopped on holiday overnight for no apparent reason and the date wheel stuck prior to that episode. mines a 2018 model so the warranty was only 2 years then. in 2020 I believe they upped it to 5 years. I haven't had any further problems since and it all seems to be running fine and keeping excellent time. I'm waiting till the 4th of November to see if the date fails to change correctly again, as it was the 4th of October the last time it had issues. if it jams again I will probably wait till I get it serviced as it's not that big a deal. that said it's still poor for a watch that costs over 4k new. I doubt I would buy another one based on what I've experienced so far, but I do really like the watch. my seiko sla043 has never had any issues like this although the movement is nowhere near as accurate as the tudor. every manufacturer has q.c issues and certain design faults with automatic movements it's just the nature of the beast. overall though I have to say all my automatics have performed pretty well, and I've never paid out yet for a service. Yes I'm a cheapskate and I'm sure I will get stung for one or two eventually, as you can't really put a 4k watch in the drawer and just forget about it, can you ? I doubt I will buy anymore expensive watches , as I have around 4 to 5 of them now. If I was just starting out again, I would probably just stick to san Martin for a few hundred quid as they offer a great watch for the money. if you buy a 4k watch you will at some point need to spend money on it , and if you do fall out of love with it , it's a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. I'm no means a rich man , but it is nice to have something nice to wear on the wrist. I've probably spent 10k over the last 8 years on watches and straps, but I would recoup about 7k back if I sold them all off , if not a tad more. not that I will, because like you I think long and hard before I buy one, and I still love everyone of my watches for different reasons .
@PeterKotsa2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Martin, PS that SLA043, maybe look at taking it down to your watchmaker, a few small tweaks and there is no reason why it cannot yield extremely accurate results, its a solid movement cheers brother
@martinharrison42452 жыл бұрын
@@PeterKotsa , yeah but that costs money. If it's a few minutes fast at the end of the month , it literally takes a few seconds to put it right. I'm not that bothered about it being super accurate , but it should be better out of the box . It could be magnetized, but I ain't spending a tenner to find out, lol. If I was really obsessed , I would just buy a quartz. I just love the sweep of an automatic, always have. As long as it's reasonably accurate, 30 secs a day , I don't really give a shit !!! I ain't spent a dime on getting my watches fixed, and I ain't starting now , lol. All this crap about servicing one every 5 years is bullshit. Maybe once in 20 , is my style , if it needs it, lol. Some people have had seikos that are 50 years old and never serviced them. If it ain't broke, leave well alone is my motto !!!! Most eBay watches are sold at around 5 years old, because people don't want to service the movement, but in reality there good for 20 , lol .

The BB 58 - especially in the vintage look - is really nice. If you can get it below retail, it’s a good deal. Of course the markers should be centered, the bezel insert should be without gaps and we don’t want to see dust under the crystal. I have seen gappy bezel inserts on a Squale 1521, but that’s a £700 watch. For £3300 that the BB 58 costs in 2023, I expect a high standard.

The BB58 is an AMAZING watch and value. I have the same one (bought in April this year, here in Miami, FL). Love it. Love it. Love it. I bought a few Vanguard rubbers for it and its hands down my fav. piece in my growing collection. Frankly, I think Rolex is now the one that I would be more embarrassed to wear. My first Todor was two tone prince date. When I seen the gold plating wearing off the band I sold it. Being a huge vintage Rolex fan, when the Black Bay came out in 2012 I thought it was cool and reminiscent of the Bond submariner. I was on vacation in Vail Colorado and had the red insert 79220r on the wrist at a AD with my credit card ready but opted out and a week later picked up a early 90s pre owned 14060 no date sub. A few years later, same thing with a pre-owned Explorer ll. I then realized Tudor wasn't for me and represents to me what many feel regarding Tudor vs. ROLEX.

Keep the watch Peter, the only people saying Tudor is rubbish are watch snobs or folks who want you to sell it so they can buy it anonymously. I don't think the boutique could tell you exactly what was wrong, on the photos we could see the blue dial paint had flaked off showing some underlying contaminant. I'd say there was dust in the air in the paint room the day that dial was painted. It happens like you say, all car manufacturers also have paint issues sometimes. Can you tell exactly what they did by inspection? You do have macro photos that most buyers would not have.
@PeterKotsa2 жыл бұрын
Definitely replaced the dial..and handset There are small tell tale signs that the dial and hands are new. Also the movement is the original one as it was gaining 1 sec per day and running at a particular amplitude on the timegrapher..its still exactly the same to the letter 👍

I really would like to know what caused it! They replace the handset so was there some anomaly with one of the hands that was scratching/marking the dial? I can’t stand not knowing what causes a problem when it arrises. Thanks for the great video!

From my understanding the dial is brass and then painted. There might have been an anomaly in the painting process which showed up over time.. cheers John

@@2K9s except the GMT lol. I guess all brands have their issues, it's all about the after care. Did all GMT's have the same issue?

I would keep it. As a minimalist I like simple things. This Tudor is perfect 'One watch collection'. Suitable for work, sports, camping and high end events.

Bought my gmt pepsi at an AD, and after 3 days, I've noticed a tiny hair sitting on the 4 hour marker. Send it back, gave me back the watch 1 month after all clean.

When people say, "Tudor is a poor man's Rolex." What they're actually commenting on, is their own values and character. Even if Tudor made a watch that they would absolutely love, they'd deprive themselves of that joy.

This isn't a flipper. This is a keeper. You always need a tool watch that can go anywhere, not be too gaudy or expensive for that matter. This should become your everyday beater in 20 years. Pass it on and keep the tradition of passing down Tudors to family alive. These are amazing and beautiful watch. Mine is going to my son in just a few years. I have several other watches and I'm not going to start him off with the most expensive watch nor do I want to put him in a position to have to worry about a Rolex or something else twice, three or four times the price, but I want him to know what quality is. The Tudor BB is not a good watch that you can flip anyways unless the idea is to wear it for a while and recoup some of your money back. I have flipped real estate and the idea is to find something on the cheap or that can be fixed up to sell at a profit, what is your angle with a new Tudor BB? They barely hold their retail value for anything but a short period of time and it would need to be in perfect condition. But it's not going to make you a decent profit. These are watches to be enjoyed. Tudor is anything but a trash brand. people saying that have ZERO idea about watches. Toss it in the bin. They are smoking crack. I bet anything the person who said that does not even own a watch.

Peter, each to their own but I found the 58 too dainty for my 7.25 inch wrist. Much prefer the 41mm models especially the ETA variants that are only 12.7mm thick.

I tried the 41 on and on the overhead it suits me, but seems a little too thick for my 7” wrist Cheers

Hi Peter, good for you that you are keeping your bb58. I have been a watch lover for many decades with anything from chinese made pieces to Speedys, Seamasters, GSs etc. Couple years ago I purchased new Tudor reverse pand and loved it's design and such. When I first purchased it and wound the crown I immediately noticed that it wasn't nearly as smooth and easy to wind as my bb41 heritage burgundy. But I assumed that because it was a b01 movement it was just not a major issue. A couple months ago the watch started to to become much more difficult to wind and I could hear the rotor spinning as I wound it. I had to drive an hour to the authorized dealer in San Francisco area for repairs. Got it back last week and it is much better but still very hard to wind. In every other way I love my Tudor panda but I am somewhat leary of that movement. Lesson for me? Watches are made by imperfect humans so occasionally problems occur.

Hey Peter, glad you’re keeping it. I have the exact same watch bought for me by my wife as a 50th bday gift last year and I love it! One question, the lume on your watch seems to be blue? Mine is green 🤷🏻♂️

Mine is green too, I shone a UV light on it during the video, causing it to emit blue 😊😎

This is also one of my biggest complaints about this watch. It makes no sense why they would choose green lume over blue?

Hi Peter, I think that Tudor's overall reputation has been enhanced by this episode. Your valid complaint was dealt with promptly by the Tudor team at the boutique and there was a good outcome. Tudor make excellent watches, but as with all manufacturers in every sphere sometimes problems can occur. Boeing found this out the hard way with the tragic 737 Max story recently, and with 787 delamination problems. Shit happens, despite every precaution. Tudor looked after you well, and is one of the few manufacturers to offer a five (or more) year warranty. Tudor seems to divide opinion widely between enthusiasts (me) and haters. The sales figures tell us all we need to know, though. Thank you for sharing this Peter. Have a good week. 🙂👋
