I'm so thankful "The Lettuce King" has taken over Dave's '04 Pete. He's truly the only one worthy of possessing it and essentially this keeps Dave's pride and joy in the family. Dave was a national treasure to the trucking brotherhood and it will never be the same without him. Thankfully we'll have all the countless videos of his timeless advice to carry on his memory. I personally received invaluable advice from him over the many years and on several occasions he even responded to me personally in the comments. May he rest in peace and I know he will always be along for the ride as his longtime friend carries on his legacy through the use of this classic truck.

Remember the Union 76’s when you pulled in the fuel line and they would fuel your truck and move it out of the way after it was full while you were eating dinner. When you went to pay at the desk you got GreenStamps and after 5 steak dinners you got a free one. I really miss those days and thought it would last forever.

Great to see the Lettuce King. I felt a big lump in my heart when Dave's truck wouldn't start without a boost. It's almost as if the big Pete knows that something isn't right, and it's missing it's driver. Sounds daft, but I really do think cars & trucks have feelings sometimes. Around 1982 I looked into trucking as a life long career and was attracted to the carefree life but was warned off by a long time trucker. His take was the life of being able to make a good living was ending due to government meddling and my best bet was to go into something else. I've always love the long nose Peterbilt And Kenworth trucks and I guess I always will. Dave was my go to guy on trucking the last few years and the life I may have missed. I will truly miss his videos on trucking after several years of him being there. God rest his soul and thanks to the Lettuce King, that we heard so much about and now know was a true friend of Dave's.

Would love to have a buddy like LK! I’ve only been driving for about 5 years. All the governors on the trucks and automatic brakes are awful. So many rules and restrictions it makes the job a real chore. I’ve considered getting out of trucking because it’s so ridiculous. I haul fuel and nothing is more scary than a full tanker and automatic brakes!

Nice to see the three of you together. Loved the shows with Dave and him together. Likely crossed paths at one time. I started in mid seventies hauling farm machinery for ringle express. Then Warren transport from 1976 to 1991. Started with w model ford then. Astros. Great days. a lot of foreign drivers. Can’t wait to retire. Love the stories lettuce king. Very nice video:) It's cool to see Dave's truck run and move again:) It's good to always start vehicles and move them around instead of leaving them sit in one spot. i ran long haul for 47 years, and was never able to buy my own truck. These last 3 years I've been running local gravel. I love my company Peterbilt with a Twin Turbo Cat, and an 18 speed transmission. I like getting home every day, but 8 trips a day into the city and fighting city traffic is getting on my nerves. If I had my own truck, I would go back on long haul, BUT I would only take one trip per week. Ya, I know. I'm a dreamer.

I remember being with my old man on the road years back when truck stops were still good. I remember one July back in the very early 90’s being laid over out in Ontario, CA at the TA, and it was like a truck show. Psh, you don’t find that hardly at all now.

I just love the Lettuce King. He truly lives up to his reputation. He is one of the few truck drivers out there that I TRULY admire and respect. First of all, he’s a Trump man like I am. BIG POINTS for that, sir. Watch for the economy to improve and REALLY kick ass once Trump takes office. Trucking might actually become fun again. When the economy is great, truckers prosper, that’s just a fact. That’s my prediction on that. Automatics? I’ve been driving for over 30 years now, I have never once driven a truck with an automatic transmission. I hope I never do, either! LK, thanks for being there for Cat and Nick and making your presence here on Smart Trucking. We loyal viewers really appreciate that, sir. I’d love to see you take possession of Dave’s truck. You’d enjoy it. The older engines are more fun with a manual, you can hear the turbo and jakes. Not so much so with a modern engine. Manual transmissions on newer, it just doesn’t make sense any more. Automated shift faster, smoother than any manual.

I agree with the Lettuce King. It "ain't" fun any more. I drove 60+years. Started on the farm with straight trucks, then when I was old enough, I moved up to tractor trailers. Finished the last few years running short hauls, so I could be home every night. Retired before ELD"s got to be pretty much mandatory.

Wacott has a big food court full of fast food. They still have the restaurant as well. Best tip for new drivers, learn to drive. I love my big Petes. Cummins, 18 spd. Don't even own flip flops.

Why not? I use it all the time. You can maintain a constant speed, you get better fuel mileage. I hate being behind people that speed up and slow down. Of course, trucks that are company owned are usually turned down and can’t maintain speed. Cruise control is awesome.

Tell lettuce king, I use to stop and fuel at Ehrenberg Az. and fuel both ways just to get their free steak and fries dinner with over 200 gallons of fuel and it was delicious, I ran Fl. to Cal. and to B.C. Canada for years in the late 70s and 80s out of central Fl.

I hold ocean containers between Phoenix and LA for five years. Every now and then I would stop in Ehrenburg. There is a 76 station on the north side, and you can park a truck in the back, and when you wake up, you’re a couple of hundred feet above The Colorado River, looking north. What a way to wake up! I also used to park on that road just south of I 10 across the valley in quartzite. Another beautiful place to wake up in the morning. The 76 in Erenberg has a fat burger and a Wetzel pretzel. Gotta love that.

Well, lettuce, King, Popeyes is actually great! But the key here is to not park in truckstops. Every town has either an airport or a bunch of those slap up - precast - warehouses. Generally speaking, there is always a free parking spot, large enough for trucks.

As a trucker for 38 years, I'm gonna say that when you take the stick out of the floor and put automatic the rules remain the same ,if you are going down the road straight backing in to a dock on dry wet winter road. I admit some trucker's do BS , but some of us as old school have to get with the time's, do any of you still send telegram or you have email, And I rest my case

Okay - so I am finally home and on my computer!!!! Will comment on his interview, now. Like Jamie, I still work because it pays, but I also work because it gives me a reason to exist, in a way. All I've ever done since I left the military is be in the industry ..... MOSTLY as what you call an OTR. I don't drive a curb sniffer (as you call it)... what I drive is kinda like an older style conventional. PACCAR don't really market Petes here, but we have Kenworth of various configurations from "curb sniffers" (AKA T610 and the like... some with an additional designation of SAR - which ORIGINALLY stood for Shortened Australian Right Hand Drive ... but is now virtually meaningless), the C series (mostly for extreme work out in the real Outback) and the T 909, which I drive ... just a little background info, is all that's for! Largely, my opinion of the Australian trucking industry is incredibly close to Jamie's!!! Owner drivers (which, in all honesty I've never been) is just about non existent Downunder, today, but neither do we have the huge mega carriers as our small population and large land mass cannot support them. The average company here, depending on the part of the industry would vary from a dozen to, say, 100 or so, with a handful having a few hundred prime movers (tractors). The attitudes, though, have diminished here as well, to be honest. I have to say that it's not a lot of fun here at all, either. The esprit de corps is just about impossible to find and blokes would as soon run over you as give you a hand..... unless you're out in the bush. In recent times, competency is also a problem as they continue to "fast track" drivers into the industry, OR import them ... one being about as bad as the other. We ALSO used to have great truck stops, but the bulk are now MacDonald's and Kentucky Chuck and the like ... although it's slightly a "chicken and the egg" scenario .... did the drivers stop frequenting the decent joints, so they closed due to lack of trade, or did they disappear and then the drivers had nowhere to get good tucker? A bit of both, I'll wager. In terms of the business, it's been buggered for many years... hence why I have never been an owner driver. One thing I do know is that Dave and Jamie probably saw the best of the industry over there and I can promise you that myself and the old dinosaurs here DEFINITELY saw the best of it here. It was tough and the gear was pretty ordinary in my early days (not much air conditioning, power steering or even a proper place to sleep, and the young blokes of today THINK they are under pressure, but I can promise you that they've NFI what pressure really is! Thankfully, some of the worst aspects of the job are long gone BUT we've also thrown the baby out with the bath water a lot over here! I gotta say that the changes haven't been all that positive, on balance for the industry here, but I'm not all that sure it's been terribly beneficial to the public, either because the truly knowledgeable, competent OPERATORS are aging out of the game, or have had enough of being treated like mongrel dogs by a huge cross section of the authorities, by the public, by the places we pick up and deliver and, quite often, by the companies! There ARE great employers out there, but few truly value their employees that HAVE the knowledge, and see the majority of their drivers as a necessary evil. Because of this, many have had enough and just got the hell out of it..... hence the "driver shortage" - another misnomer! We don't have paid parking areas, but we just don't have any parking at all, over the majority of the country! There's a couple of corridors that are OK, but aside from that, we usually just have a gravel patch, NO bloody toilets (virtually at all), NO kiosks and bugger all garbage bins - and if we have those, they are just a 44 gallon drum randomly around the joint! I 100% agree with your advice. Sadly, mentoring is also a thing of the past in a lot of our industry! Don't even get me started on this electronic/automatic/bullshit ...... all of those are all well and good PROVIDED the driver is skilled but even skilled drivers get used to the damned machines doing half their job for them and when the electronics fails (as it does - ESPECIALLY out on the dirt that I am often covering, it can turn to brown, smelly stuff REAL quick! Case in point, I absolutely refuse to use cruise control in any truck. I might use it in my car, but NEVER in the big jigger. Anyway - thanks soooo much for doing this clip! 🙂 I have so many things that I 100% agree with! Kindest regards Indy PS. I have to agree with the lettuce king. I hate trucking now days. The nice restaurants in the truck stops are gone. While ELDs make you get some sleep, you can't get a spot to park. It's a freak show of drivers out on the road, many don't speak English. I'm 65 with a local job now and I cringe at the thought of ever going back on the road. It has turned into a serious shit show and the good old days will ever be again. I'm not surprised driver retention has gotten to this point. I do miss that 500hp v8 Mack. It would roll smoke. Probably illegal to own one today.

i drove tanker gas in 70s.i had my dave to he was tall muscular kept himself sharp.i drove for 5 years he trained me.he was 2 weeks from retirement at knudsen trucking he topped a hill another semi hit him head on he was driving a brand new white cabover 13 speed first trip out that was 1983 i still miss that guy.week later my boss grabbed me around shoulder sorry about your friend.see that truck leaving yard its rekitted new cab.thats the day i quit driving.he didnt care is was about saving money.when i got home i had letter in mailbox from wayne transport they offered me 60 thousand a year big money back in early 80s all red petes 13 speeds turned them down. i could be retired by now if i woulda saID YES.if only
