Thanks guys! It only goes up from here once we get our bearings about us. Video, audio, and production all improve in the coming weeks. All credit to good friend Justin Wylie who is a crazy talented cinematographer who showed to seasoned photographers the way.

I recently did this blind myself. 107 took it but it was so close. Like Josh, I think Maker's could have won on a different day, depending on my palate. Maker's CS is between 43-50 here in MA. 107 is very hard to find. I was lucky enough to get mine at retail (70). I think Maker's is such an underrated bourbon. Their lineup can really hold its own against some of the harder-to-find wheated bourbons (imo). Next, I want to blind standard Maker's up against WSR. I've done other comparisons as well. Would love to see y'all do Van Winkle 12 yr Special Reserve against Maker's 46 (not the CS). I wonder if you'd be as surprised as I was.

Maker’s 46 is one we love to recommend in place of Weller 12 so could definitely see Lot B vs Maker’s 46 being a great comparison!

“I don’t love bitter wood in my mouth.” 😂 I enjoyed the review. I’ve had the Weller 12 & SR but the 107 is hard to find in AZ and CA.
@stuffandwhiskey
@stuffandwhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
Distribution is always so interesting. We get almost no 107 here either, WSR is almost very slim pickings, and I’ve actually never seen a single Weller 12 in stores ever, but some states like TX and OH are flush with WSR and 107. Here’s to hoping Buffalo Trace’s expansion leads to more whiskey for all of us soon(ish). Cheers Leo!

I watched this while sipping on the MM cast strength for the first time. I really enjoyed it. I’m curious as to what you think is a better bourbon than Weller Antique 107 for less money. I’ve only had the Weller 12 and it was good. Very similar flavor profile to Eagle Rare 10 year. However, I overpaid at $250. I just wanted to try it and it’s super hard to find. It’s sitting on the shelf for any of my friends or family to try now. I’d rather sip on an Elijah Craig at $40 a bottle than that. My favorite so far is the Wild Turkey Rate Breed. So good for only $55. Bourbon prices are so high right now. Any thoughts on what to buy under $100 that is super good? I live in North East Tennessee and I can get some allocated bottles. I picked up an EH Taylor Bottled in Bond today for $120. I have no idea if that was a good deal or not. I’m waiting on my son to come home from college before we open that one.

Cheers to sharing those bottles with friends and family! As for what to buy under $100 that's super good, you're already doing pretty great with Rare Breed. It's also worth checking out any Russell's Reserve Private Selection or Single Barrel at 110 proof, almost any Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (but we'd skip the current A124 batch), Old Forester 1920, Maker's 46 Cask Strength, Knob Creek 120 proof Single Barrels, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof, and Four Roses Small Batch Select to cover most of the major distilleries. All great pours and tasting through those should give you a good idea of where your palate preferences align. Cheers and thanks for watching Kevin!

Wheated bourbon isn't my go-to but I do like MM once in a while as a changeup. I have never had the Wellers, but the MMCS is really good @ only $41 a bottle. 🥃Cheers!

Great first vid! Agree to a previous comment about production quality of the vid - great job, very chill/relaxing vibe to it. I like the rubric but consider having a zero score for thumbs down as I can see in the future when you evaluate other highly allocated AND overhyped stuff, value and availability should not have a positive score at all, so zero points for those might make sense. As for the tastings and overall scores, I’m not surprised of the outcome - I’ve done some blinds with Weller vs. Makers wood stave finishes and other wheaters of similar proofs - guess where the Weller ended up? 😉
@stuffandwhiskey
@stuffandwhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Timothy! We’ve definitely got a zero score in there-just failed to mention it. That’s something we correct in the upcoming matchups (Week 3 going forward I believe) along with drastically improved audio and even better video + editing. Really appreciate the kind words and we’re excited for the quality to only go up from here. Cheers!

Great first review guys! Good luck with the channel. I'm curious how you set up a double blind tasting for yourselves. Do you have a silent partner that picks out the bourbon and provides the samples?
@stuffandwhiskey
@stuffandwhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Fred! We figure out how to show more of the process in future videos (and get a LOT more comfortable in front of the camera too). To directly answer your question, we have a large blind sample pool of paired pours that make interesting matchups. Josh pours those, labels them, and enters the info into our blind answer key. Erin then comes in and mixes all the pairs up while putting them away in one of a few divided sample boxes (she doesn’t know what she’s mixing up). We then unpack them randomly into rows when it’s time to film, run a randomizer via the PrettyRandom app, and we drink whichever pairing coordinates to the randomized number (left to right, front to back for the viewer). The integrity of our double blind format and honest opinions are what we’re staking all our head-to-head episodes on. We’ll also drink stuff non-blind but that’ll happen during our weekly video podcasts episodes that air on Saturdays. I believe the third week is when we figure out how to clue the viewers in a bit more on the double blind process BTW. We also clean up our scoring graphics for the viewers too. Long answer, but necessary. It’s every bit as much work as it sounds like, but worth it to bring something new to the whiskeytube space.

@@stuffandwhiskey Wow! That does sound like a lot of work. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I think I'll try to come up with a simple system to set up blind sets using sample bottles with coded labels and just rely on my poor memory not to know what I'm picking out on any given night, lol. That wouldn't work for you, I know but good enough for just me and my wife/son/friends. Cheers!
@stuffandwhiskey
@stuffandwhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
@@fosmith61 that’s a very solid way to go about it. If you pour enough pairs you absolutely forget what all is in the blind pool. I (Josh) don’t remember 90% of the matchups in our blind pool due to the size and how long ago I poured most of it-and I did all the pouring, labeling, AND shot all the b-roll. My old man memory didn’t stand a chance. 😂

Erin seems to be more sensitive to the alcohol on the nose. I suggest you smell/inhale as you slowly bring the glencairn up to your nose. When the alcohol gets too strong then back it off a little. Something I learned watching the Whiskey Vault.

Good stuff, this is exactly why you have to be educated on what you're buying so you don't have to chase bourbon when there are bottles just sitting on the shelves ready to buy. Oh and the wife appreciates that you DON'T like bitter wood in your mouth, 😆🤣 Great job!!!
@stuffandwhiskey

At least when it comes to bourbon. 😂 Well said Scott. From an educational standpoint we’re definitely partial to double blinds. There isn’t a hyped bottle we get that doesn’t get entered into our blind pool against a comparable and much more available pour to see if it’s really worth the hubbub. With three months of content already filmed, we’ll just say there are some VERY interesting matchups on the horizon. Titans are tested, a darling or two gets destroyed, and we have a ton of fun. Thanks for the support!

I've had Pappy 15 and 20 and I can tell you the OWA tastes very similar....So it would be possible that you guys may like MM cask over a $4000 Pappy 15 😆
@stuffandwhiskey
@stuffandwhiskey 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly. We’d have to blind them to find out. 😉 The only Pappy that’s eluded us has been the Rip 10 and the Pappy 20 year surprisingly. 15 is definitely the best of the bunch-and very very good to be sure-but at the end of the day it’s just corn juice. If both were available at retail we’d grab the Pappy but it’s not really worth what they go for or the hassle to get them (just our opinion obviously, more power to the folks who love Pappy).
