The AIM-9X Sidewinder missile is the newest member in the family of AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range missiles produced by Raytheon. It is an infrared air-to-air missile primarily developed for the US Air Force and the US Navy.
The AIM-9X is currently in service with more than 22 countries worldwide.
The US Air Force requires 5,080 Sidewinder missiles, while the US Navy plans to buy 5,000 missiles. The AIM-9X is supplied to Nato member countries and other US-allied nations as well.

Lockheeds new “Sidekick” weapons rack allows the F-35 to carry 6 missiles internally, either 2 AIM-9X and 4 AIM-120D, or 6 AIM-120D’s. This should also work for the upcoming AIM-260 since it will continue to use the same form factor as the AIM-120D. The F-35 just continues to get more and more lethal 👍

I do have to say one thing though, next time when filming DCS at least try and fire the missile that the video covers. The F/A-18C in DCS is capable of carrying the AIM-9X so I have no idea why one wasn't used at 3:08. Anyways, keep up the great work!

Its days are numbered likely. The AirForce is looking into smaller missiles like the AIM-160 Cuda and Peregrine missile. The Cuda lacks a warhead to make it smaller and faster with longer range do to the lack of the bulk and weight of a warhead, but must be more accurate as it requires a direct hit to down its target. The Peregrine is a smaller version of the AIM-260 with supposedly everything but a much shorter range. Even if it only has a range of 50km (vs the 200km of the AIM-260) this will be far superior to the AIM-9. And if it has the IR as well as the active and passive radar capabilities of the AIM-260, then this will be a beast. The fact that it is designed to fit in the place of 2 AIM-120 or AIM-260 makes it VERY powerful. If it does have the capabilities of the AIM-260 then it can fire without a lock, being sent to a location based on GPS or guidance from another radar or IR through the Link-16 system... then it can fire at targets behind or beside it and allow the jet to flee the area or move against another target. It could be the Peregrine is basically an advanced AIM-9 that is shorter and stubbier. All we know is it is 6 feet long and 150 pounds and renderings show it without the large fins so it is more compact for loading inside the weapon bays of the F-22 and F-35 more efficiently. The US is make huge steps forward in missiles and laser technology and before 2030 should have some crazy impressive systems in service.

Would love to see aim9x mounted on a cylinder type rotating dispenser similar to sram launchers made for B52.Instead of loading missiles one at a time into the weapons bay you could change out the entire cylinder with a fresh set of 6 missile much faster than loading 4 or 6 individually.In use the bottom missile fires then cylinder rotates to provide next weapon available in bottom firing position.Drastic reduction in combat turn around times.

@peterisawesomeplease
@peterisawesomeplease 3 жыл бұрын
It means the radar detector on your aircraft has noticed the enemy radar is hitting you with sufficient power and frequency to be able to launch a missile. But there is actually very complex guess work involved in this. Modern radars try to hide when they have a good enough read on the enemy or alternatively may even pretend to be in a firing mode when they aren't. Electronic warfare has become ridiculously complex.

@Aim54Delta
@Aim54Delta 4 жыл бұрын
Don't get me started on the F-35 Penguin. It would make an awesome weaponized submersible. "Let's build a stealth fighter with higher wingloading than the F-105 and it can only carry two missiles!" Except "stealth" has pretty much been completely eradicated. Radars are more powerful and frequency agile. They actually "chirp" through a frequency range, anymore - so you're going to generate a return and the way modern filtering works allows for even the smallest returns to be amplified and processed - even the noise - to filter based on velocity, altitude, and other factors. Stealth isn't "bad" - but up against a modern radar system, you're not really at much of an advantage. So do you spend 5x as much on a stealth fighter that is only kinda-sorta stealthy - or do you field 5x as many standard aircraft? Frankly, I'd strip all the avionics out of the F-35, find an old F-14 D, and retrofit the shit out of it. Maybe take another F-35 and cram the two engines into the Tomcat. Instantly better than 2 F-35s. I'm being silly as it wouldn't be that simple - but the F-35 is probably one of the worst ideas in military aviation history.

@@Aim54Delta It seems like you're just looking at the F-35 by its airframe alone. I mean really? The wing loading bothers you? This is not 1970s smh. Do you know the avionics inside that A/C? It really just comes down to technique in deploying the flares at the right time while making the proper turn to avoid the missile. If you do it wrong the missile wont track the flares and will not have to turn very much making it easier to hit you. There is no IR missile that wont detect a flare. The flares can actually totally blot out the sensors in some cases.
@psyanide1603
@psyanide1603 2 жыл бұрын
@@thebigchunk2882 Sure but you won't be beating something like an AMRAAM with chaff alone especially when it's within it's lethality range (the range at which a target has little chance to defeat the missile with evasion, both maneuvering and countermeasures, in the case of the AIM-120c I believe that's about 12-15 Nm, whilst it has a max range of 22Nm. Also the 9X so far from what I've read has a very high flare rejection rate, combine that with it being able to be fired at aspect that no other close range heat seeker can means the pilot being engaged with them might not even think hew needs to deploy flares at that point. It's a nasty nasty evolution of the missile, I say nasty, in terms of traditional dogfights it is because it completely throws off any balance there might or could have been, the ability to lock on after launch is in itself a massive force multiplier as it elevates the pilot of having to get into the best possible launch parameters before releasing.

Just one misnomer..... The AIM 9 was originally designed and built by Hughes Aircraft Company, Missile Systems Group (aka in the 50's Hughes Aerospace Group). This generation was already engineered in the 1980's that Raytheon is now building..... BTW, when General Motors (yes, Roger Smith himself) purchased HAC they immediately placed their own executives in place at MSG with circuitry mfg sent to Mexico....where they had 100% test failure.... the "new" execs ordered all the test data be falsified, sending the AIM 54c (Phoenix) to the Navy which was ultimately caught through the IG & whistleblowers, but at the same time, bribes were attempted by these execs to senator's in oversight committees, who then turned informant to the FBI....and were caught in a sting operation. In addition to these execs being convicted HAC MSG was banned from all missile contracts for 5 years... in essence, putting the business unit out of business.... which was sold to Raytheon.

The most obvious shortcoming of the US air-to-air missiles, all of them, is the need for completely new rocket motors to extend their effective range. At present our assets must operate well within the operational range of opposition forces before being able to engage targets. It’s like taking a knife to a gunfight.
@peterisawesomeplease
@peterisawesomeplease 3 жыл бұрын
Ehh very long range air to air missiles have some serious disadvantages. They stress logistics and put big constraints on aircraft design. Also for the most part if you fire them at the super long ranges the enemy fighters usually have no problem getting away or shooting them down with cheaper missiles of their own(which yes is a thing). They are mostly useful for taking out things like tankers, bombers, and awacs. Which after the Soviet Union fell the US really did not need to do any more which is why we ditched the phoenix. They are slowly becoming more important again for the US. But they are mostly important for our adversaries as you use the kind of assets they best target.
@richardbriscoe8563

@@peterisawesomeplease The Phoenix was an old very long range missile which was dedicated to fleet defense against incoming Soviet bombers which was simply obsolete in many ways. The inability of our forces to engage opposition air assets outside the range of their missile requires us to send men and machines well into the threat of enemy air assets before being able to engage them. It is the same as taking a knife to a gun fight.

The Rafael Python V (ISR) is a larger-diameter missile than the AIM-9 Series (USA), built for the same mission parameters with a slightly heavier warhead; but Python V steers like older 'Winders. The AIM-9X implements many features that intelligence pinned to the VKS Rossija/Vympel R-73S (RUS) when it was still under development as the K-73.

@@BCSchmerker well...if American intelligent services pick any information for the R73, it took them very long time to evaluate its capabilities. The first "contact" with R73, was in Germany around 2003, when navy's F18 had exercised with German MiG29, and the outcome was really bad for them. "Jets equipped with off-bore site missiles, should faced with something equivalent in dogfights". BVR is different story. AIM9X came much later! First western country with such missiles, was Greece, if I'm not mistaken! First dispatched of IRIS-T delivered around 2008!

topfuel29 perhaps, but a lot is built around the carriers. Carriers float, and to be honest it has not been a modern equality war since korea. This means that the carriers are a possible flaw. What if a sub actually fires off four or six torpedoes. Yes they have a carrier group and they are good, and the hull is likelly to have a lot of steeel and protective measurements but so far no one knlws what happens with a broadside in the stern. This may be a bit " but that will never happen"... but it can as both iran and north korea have although old, some potent subs from a time ussr actually built working things. Take in to account that failure is not an option there..and that the risks are either holy or political where normal soldiers etc would not dare to attack due to elimination from the strike force. One, carrier is a valid target for one such country as they would gain huge from it..that usa isnt invulnerable. That is why perhaps it is logical to eventually oversee the tactics ..and put more land based troops.

@@jonjonsson6323 - In a nuclear war with Russia or China they'd most likely nuke the Carrier Groups. Because Like you mentioned it would be very difficult to get close enough to the Carrier group to use conventional weapons. Iran or North Korea wouldn't have those extra nukes to take out those Carrier Groups, they might have nuclear torpedoes, and that would be hard to defend against, because it doesn't have to hit anything, just has to get close, the nuke could be fired 100's a feet below the Carrier Group.

topfuel29 well, at least that ks the kdea..bjt kt was pretty easy to do. Us navy rented a swedish sub for two years as to try get it in simulation. *In addition to the IR-guilded AIM-9X Block 2,* the Navy and Air Force should explore the feasibility of an AIM-9Y K- or L-band SARH version with off-boresight lock-on; low radar observable targets will definitely shorten the terminal lock-on ranges of the AIM-120C - perhaps to AIM-9 optimum range against the Sukhoi-57 (RUS), an evolution of the Flanker platform of OKB Sukhogo, and the Shenyang J-31 (CHN), an evolution of the Fulcrum platform of OKB Mikojana (RUS).

(except the aim9c) sorry for bad English, and i dont think the aim9 would be a good SARH Missile, because at the ranges the Aim9(x) is usefull you would much rather use an IR missile, negating the whole point of an Radar-Guided Aim9x

The old A/B Sidewinders had that issue, plus chasing after small civilian flares. This was resolved with later revisions and block improvements. The Super Snakes use UV augmented seeker heads that are a larger version the current Stinger MANPADS utilize. Pretty nasty considering they are slaved to the aircraft's fire control to "snipe" a given target, leaving the others alone. You don't get that with a Slammer, or any other missile on the market.
