There are only a few I have respect for.. the rest are more interested in feathering their own nest rather than doing what is right for the American People. ALL of Congress has generally been in the business of raising spending whenever it suits them and keeping taxes where they are or increasing it slightly. This induces an incredible amount of deficit spending by the Feds (or.. to use an older term that isn't accurate except in spirit: printing money). This directly induces inflation, which acts as a hidden tax (because it gives the Feds extra money which coincidentally reduces the value of every dollar in circulation). BOTH parties do this.

But that said, I follow politics closely and have a lot of expertise in history and economics. That makes me not so easy to fool. I think the pressures of life and kids and the rest make it so most folks are just missing the time to learn. That is fine as far as it goes, but it doesn't change the fact that those same voters don't know how to choose a politician that really understands and can help fix things for the future. It is how we've ended up in the terrible debt situation we are in (among all the other negatives)

Until I understood enough about history and economics to understand JUST what the politicians were suggesting, I was in the same boat. The stuff folks need to know generally just requires a desire to read about it. But how many folks do you know that are conversant in history or economics? I only know one person like that... me (some folks who are commentators strike me like this, but I'm talking about folks you've actually met in your life). Some level of education is required along with effort to really listen to what the politicians are saying and relate that to what you know. Democracy historically fails because most people can't really be entrusted to do what is required to become good voters. Democracies fail because of voters who can be manipulated. Then the bad leaders that are voted in don't know this stuff either, and the leaders drive their economies off a cliff which lays them open to all types of depredations. All other government systems fail because their leaders don't know economics/history, and those same leaders drive their economies off a cliff which lays them open to all types of depredations. Democracy's real strength is that truly authoritarian politicians get flushed out fairly quickly (since it becomes obvious fairly quickly to any voter). Democracy's weakness is the voters and their complete ignorance of why some state policies work and others don't.. and that takes the economic/history knowledge to know.
