Quite illuminating to see and hear about some cardinal Belgian locos, especially the story about multi-voltages where the SNCB plays a key role indeed. Lovely.

Nice loco, great addition to your collection. You did some great study on the Belgium railway history.😃 The Serie 16 was a very small loco serie and in fact not commonly seen along the Belgium railway lines.

Lovely to see some Belgian rolling stock at work. I am very curious about the unit train the NOHAB was pulling; what are those tall wagons used for? Maybe you could do a video on your posters one day; you have quite a few of them and they look interesting. A bientôt!
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail Жыл бұрын
To be honest I am not sure about the unit train, the wagons are side unloaders of type 1000 G1, but it is difficult to find any information about them. The Marklin version is functional, and can be activated with an uncoupling track. I did a video about them when I received them (here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3TLdqZmjd6df8k). The posters are high resolution scans of catalogue covers or pages, which I had printed in A2 or A3 format. Thanks for the visit!

These cars were used for the transportation of coal. One train could have existed out of 35 cars like these.

Série 16 is a useful class of locomotives which makes obsolete with the check of passports the need to stop at borders for changing the motive power. A natural application thus would be on point of the Orient Express originating from Oostende bound for Vienna. As a boy, do you recall such trains in the late '60s, early '70s?
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail 9 ай бұрын
I never travelled on that route. In general, my memory is that the passport checks srill took place on trains until the 1990s... The customs/border police got in the train a few stops earlier and checked documents on board.

What a shame you did not give the Nohab Co-Co a chance to show how well it can start a heavy train s-l-o-w-l-y. You need to adjust the brush tension and keep serviced, but even with the three slot rotor, they can be brilliant. My two are the best runners I have (2 railed).
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail Жыл бұрын
Yep, excellent runners indeed and they can crawl for sure... But difficult to show in an automated session controlled by a single analogue transformer... Thanks for your time today, much appreciated
@petert9749

@@The3rdRail Yes; thanks for your comment. The Nohab is an interesting model. I had hoped to base some local prototype models on the chassis, but the model seems to be not Half O scale; relating to that the bogie axle spacing is short. Rather a pity. I'm not sure spare part bogies/trucks are obtainable now. Best Wishes.
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail Жыл бұрын
@petert9749 It is a tooling from the early 1960s, when nothing mass market was made to scale, it is just a toy that cannot be compared to the scale models you would get today. They are simply not the same type of products. Add to this that the belgian 202/203/204 were made by AFB, and are only related to NOHAB through the GM design they both used. So the SNCB/CFL locos are different from their Scandinavian cousins, and if you dig a bit deeper, you'll find even more disappointing lack of detail and weaknesses in terms of realism 😉 You'd have to look for models from the mid 1990s onwards for something more realistic and closer to true 1/87. Have a good weekend.
@petert9749
@petert9749 Жыл бұрын
@@The3rdRail Yes, no disagreement. Pity though they shortened the bogie as it precluded its use under scratchbuilt stock. You must understand, we Marklin appreciators get a lot of flak; oh the undiluted pleasure of a 'toy' powered loco outperforming 'their' expensive junk. A smile from ear to ear. Back to your point: I have always understood the Marklin of that era as a solution to lack of space. For the era, I suppose it was a form of N scale. Enjoyed the recent 'unboxing' of the Orient loco. Hopefully you occasionally examine the products of other manufacturers, just to remind you of how good this stuff really is. Three in the morning; gotta go. Pete

I have just bought a Marklin NMBS / SNCB 16, but I think it is a 3rd rail / AC model. Do you have any idea how I can run her on 2 rail DC ? Many thanks !
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail Жыл бұрын
You'd have to change the wheelsets and add pickups to get it to run. The wheelsets are not isolated in 3 rail AC. You could also try and find a Marklin Hamo 8163, which is the 2 rail version of the series 16 (in blue livery).A lot of the Marklin 3 rail models were sold in 2 rail version under the Hamo brand, and later Trix. They are usually identical from a tooling perpective, the only diffrence being the wheel axles and current pickups. Hope this helps.

@@The3rdRail Thank you so very much for your helpful advice. In a way, it is such a shame because seeing her run on your layout looked fantastic. But I cannot go to third rail, just for one model, when i have loads (BR, SNCF, SNCB, DB, DSB, NSB, IR, SBB, Via Rail Canada, Ontario Northland, Alaska Railroad etc.). I bought Marklin 1605 in blue, as I had enjoyed that loco twice from Koln Hbf to Brussels Zuid, during my many "day trips" London to Bonn to Koln to Bonn to Koln to Bonn to London, chasing DB 103s !

These are sleeping cars, actually there were more of them in different colors (and all 24cm), they are behind the blue 1600 in the video. Look in the description of the vdeo for a link to the train composition information I did for this video, you;ll need to scroll down the page when you get there (I think the blue loco is a marklin 3152),
