I have Fleischmann HO stock , mostly analogue . I think the 01 catalogue no 4169 is my favourite . It came pre-owned on EBay . In mint condition but didn’t mention it was fitted with a smoke element . This makes perfect smoke rings ! I then bought another from the same seller , again a non mentioned smoke unit . The previous O1 cat number 4170 is also excellent , although it is in a slightly bigger scale . I love all the double deck Swiss trains in my collection and I added a Roco class 146 ( I have only a few Roco). So maybe some Hamo in the future 😊

Your site is invaluable! Seriously, I cannot thank you enough for the service you provide to those of us who still run analog M track layouts utilizing vintage Marklin engines and rolling stock. More importantly, to provide this service in English! Sir you are amazing in terms of your problem solving /servicing ability with clear and concise instruction. Please keep it coming. Your's is my favorite Marklin site by far. Cheers

These are of course THE Märklin classics. We too still don't have one of them..., however someday most certainly. Quite some enjoyable tips actually once again. It all makes perfect sense. Funny enough hardened oil or grease seems to be a hit or miss in our experience. Perhaps M have used a certain lubricant more susceptible in some years whilst older locos from the 1970s just run no matter how long they have been in storage. Of course they all need a bit of time to settle when commissioning them again after a few years. We'll have to think about the grounding thingy when we are ready to buy one of these. Thank you for this delightful educational upload once again.
@The3rdRail4 күн бұрын
I think the oil Märklin has been using all the way until 10 years ago (the last time I bought Märklin oil) resinifies with age.If people use too much, this make matters worse, it resinifies quicker is locos are left unused for longer periods of time, and I think storage conditions and temperature also play a role, hence the hit and miss. Thanks as ever for your support, much appreciated, glad your enjoyed the video.

I have always been quite reluctant if it comes to using WD40 on delicate mechanisms. Most people think WD40 is a lubricant……..it is NOT! It is meant for freeing up rusted metal parts. Therefore, WD40 in most cases is not suitable for train models from the 50’s and newer. Hardly ever rust is a problem if stored properly, only dried up grease is most of the time causing problems. So the combination of WD40 and dried up grease is only a very temporary solution, rather no solution at all if disassembly of the model is not done. It will make problems only worse. I take apart the entire running gear instead and clean it in an ultrasonic bath or, if not available, white spirit. After that I’ll service the loco according to the manufacturers’ instructions. I hope this persistent myth of WD40 being a lubricant is finally debunked.
@The3rdRail5 күн бұрын
I have the distinct impression you stopped watching as soon as WD-40 was mentioned, and engaged on this mini rant... There is no myth spreading going on here... Couple of things: 1) I don't advocate the use of WD-40 as a lubricant in this or any other of my videos. 2) WD-40 was engineered to displace water (W=water, D=Displacement, 40=40th iteration of the formula, it took a few tries to get the formulation right 😀), uses include freeing seized parts, be it due to corrosion, grease or dirt, and it, indeed, is not a durable lubricant, therefore not suitable for lubrication of models. But it is perfectly suitable for freeing seized parts. 3) Ideally, and I agree with you, you'd want to take everything apart and thoroughly clean each components individually. An ultrasonic cleaner is good for this... If you have one...But taking things apart gets complicated with Märklin axles, as wheels are pressed on axles, and even more when quartering is involved, The process requires tools and skills not everyone has to hand. 4) White spirit dissolves paint, not the best thing on models, I wouldn't use any... But they are your trains and you do want you want with them. Next time I would advise to take a deep breath, spend a bit of time actually trying to absorb what is being said, then comment... Thanks for the visit in any case, comments are always welcome, good or bad.
@leyland99994 күн бұрын
@ Hi. Thanks for your reply! No, not a rant, not at all. Thing is, the majority of people use WD40 for just about everything that’s stuck, no matter what. And true, I don’t use WD40 when I work on model trains. I also have been restoring juke boxes. The effects on those machines is no less than disastrous because WD40 and layers of nicotine form a sticky and hard to remove substance. And that’s where the effects of dried grease and WD40 come in. WD40 should be kept well away from delicate mechanisms. That’s what I think of the product, which if used properly, is fine for the purpose it was designed for. Greetings, Wilhelm.

This channel is a tonic. Just the passion for the models. No churlish comments about companies, people, or sideswipes about anything political. Nothing immature or unnecessary. Just the love of the Marklin models. As well as being informative and educational for anyone trying to tread the same hobby path. If I were to try to name the other channels that manage to follow those rules, it would number few. A gem.

I didn't realize that there are so many different Crocodile models out there. The one I fell in love with was the 1960 model with dual motors. It cost an astounding $55.00 dollars back in 1967. Should have bought 10! Right now, I have a metal digital model that I purchased 10 years ago. It is very smooth and runs exceptionally well. There was always something bothering me about the Croco scale. Compared to the 4-6-2 001 series, it seems a bit small. I have been on a real Crocodile in Geneva during a train show. They are massive. Is it my imagination, or are the HO Croc's the correct proportion to the other locos?
@muir80095 күн бұрын
Very expensive models, both then and now! They didn't actually have dual motors, however the 00/H0 crocs until 1975 had all their driving wheels driven, with a very large central motor and a rather over the top drivetrain. This can lend confusion as the later ones had only the single unit driving, which can give the impression of the early ones having dual motors. You are correct regarding the "scale". The post- '75 3056 onwards were true 1:87 H0 scale. The preceeding series CCS800 and 3015 were substantially larger. Many folk have attributed this as being 00 scale, especially as märklin used the 00 gauge reference in their earlier literature. However this is a misnomer: for märklin their 00 was 1:90, it was only later on they started to use the term H0 to fit in with overseas marketing, the products though were the same. Anyway, the crocodiles were sized that way (they're close on 1:76) due to just jamming in as much machinery as possible. The hoods are well over scale width to accomodate a lay flat reverser, had to clear the complex drive train when running around 287mm radius (about 11") curves. 'Twas a means to an end. With the comparison to an 01, the 01 is actually a large locomotive, the Reichsbahn loading gauge is actually comparable to the New York Centrals (for the US folk) whereas the Swiss loading gauge is smaller. Although lithe looking and an express locomotive, parked next to say a class 44 2-10-0 heavy goods locomotive, you get an appreciation of how large the 01 actually was, let alone the 05, or an 08. An FYI the Reichsbahn boiler used on the BR45 was only a metre shorter than that of the monstrous Lima 2-6-6-6 Allegheny (although the Allegheny had a combustion chamber which added to its lengtg)
