John - your channel is terrific - entertaining as well as informative and you’ve become a most trusted source for me, so thank you. In this review you mentioned that in a studio environment there would be other lenses you’d recommend. Enlighten me, please.

What a beauty. 🤩 There's something about cine lenses with the gears feeling so good and professional. 💪

@@FrameVoyager Just the fact that they use T stops sounds great in environments where you need even lighting between different lenses.

I am planning to buy a lens for my OG BMPCC, which one should i choose laowa 17mm, meike 12mm or meike 16mm lens? I need it for my youtube channel shooting myself in interview style videos.

Nice lens but I do like a softer image for video. Currently checking out 7Artisans and SLR Magic lenses

Great review! Would there be a reason to get this over the sigma 18-35? I know 17mm is wider but that sounds like a minimal difference. I feel like the only benefits are native MFT and size.
@FrameVoyager2 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm... I fell like they are such different lenses. But no I would see the Laowa lens more as a specialty lens and the 18-35 more conducive to various work

what are your thoughts on the 7.5mm for vlogging and gimbal work? I have seen the new announces on the 6mm now but i am not sure about it yet. My main concern is between 6mm, 7.5mm or 9mm for the bmpcc4k as a wide and sharp solution for vlogging, tight spaces on run n gun interviews and decent sharpness. My widest set up right now is tokina 11-16mm but i need to use it at 13/14mm to use the full frame with the speed booster and also cracking down to 5.6 to get a decent sharpness in most of the cases. Any feedback is welcome my guy! i really enjoy your funny review

I have the 7.5mm. Very sharp. Nice close focusing.

Absolutely love my 7.5mm not gonna lie. It has very good sharpness to it. I used it a lot in this video 2 years ago! --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/imnRaGOJZZqCiqs But you'll notice it a lot in some of my other videos. But I LOVE it's wide look

Can I mount a polar pro variable ND filter in front of the lens?
@FrameVoyager2 жыл бұрын
I assume so as long you have the right size threading or step down rings
@HONDAMAN932 жыл бұрын
@@FrameVoyageryes, i have step up rings but Although the filter size for each lens is written on the LAOWA website, I asked a question because there was no groove to attach the filter to the front of the lens in the photo.

@@HONDAMAN93 Yep! I show the grooves early on in the video if you want to get a look at them!

Hey Zonghiye Speedmaster T1.0 17mm could be a good alternative but it is bulky...but T1.0...did you tried it? By the way I got some IR pollution...so bought Hoya filter did you have some problem as well?with bmpcc4k
@FrameVoyager2 жыл бұрын
Yep! I did try out the Zhong Yi 17mm and it was great! I feel like they are 2 different kinds of lenses though in the way you'd use them. I generally have not had too much of an IR Pollution problem with mine. But you know, have been meaning to dig into that in a future video here at somepoint
@filipmichalsaffray4412 жыл бұрын
@@FrameVoyager I think the IR could be as well related with the lens which can accentued it in some case...I had a feeling like that with some of my fast TT lens but I can't prove it because I don't have the tools to do it...but already with Xrite video color chart I had some lens more prone to it and other less...unfortunately I don't have the talent and time of Gerald Undone to do the appropriate test...

Which other lenses would you recommend in the same range?
@FrameVoyager2 жыл бұрын
ummm, can't go wrong with the lumix 12-35mm with IS in it. I've used that lens non stop with the p4k. That should be linked below in the description somewhere
@landoohmke2 жыл бұрын
And which is the main difference with the original 17mm?
@FrameVoyager2 жыл бұрын
It's a cine lens so it's built to work more with video than just photography lens --> www.adorama.com/alc/what-is-a-cine-lens-and-how-is-it-different-from-a-photo-lens/
@nathanbperkins2 жыл бұрын
Interesting lens, but I probably wouldn't go for it unless it were even faster, like 1.2 or 1.4. I also wonder if the size of this lens kind of undermines the "cine" aspect of it. Like, for nearly all situations there's no way you're going to be able to get a follow focus to fit the iris ring. Or in some gimbal situations you wouldn't be able to get a follow focus gear close enough to pull focus. These things, combined with the price, make this a no go for me. The Meike 16mm T2.2 seems like it has much better build quality and design for the same price so I find this a hard sell unless you absolutely need something tiny.
@FrameVoyager2 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity, what would you want a 1.2 or 1.4 for? But I agree, the size makes things a bit challenging but there are some way to manage connecting it to a follow focus, but not as easy for sure. I've always found Laowa lenses to be excellent for traveling with, especially when I'm trying to film while hiking and have limited space. They are def. Specialty lenses
@nathanbperkins2 жыл бұрын
@@FrameVoyager I've used both Full Frame and MFT (Although I only own MFT gear). I've been directing a short film shot on my BMPCC 4K using a 2.8 lens and while I've been incredibly happy with the results, there are times where I really wish I could match the depth of field of a 2.8 lens on a full frame camera. All this being said I've founding creating depth with lighting to be so much more important than a fast lens. I also do more narrative and studio work where I have extra space to spare so I think I'm not quite the target audience for this lens.

@@FrameVoyager I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the new Olympus 12-40 f2.8 PRO lens. I bought the first edition used for about half the retail price and it's been my go to for 90% of what I do. The new one seems more rugged so I wonder how it would handle the tougher conditions you work in.
