I’m very excited about this one, and it’s not short and fat. 👍👍. 175gr has always worked well in 7 Rem Mag for me. But the numbers don’t lie 7mm is a great balance and the numbers on this new cartridge looks well balanced for a new/ updated hunting cartridge. I think the 6.8 sales might suffer if Hornady can get market support and get the ammo to the consumer. Great 👍 video. Thanks for keeping us updated.

If you are talking about 6.8 Western, it was introduced into a market that already contained several Magnum-class 7mm cartridges, so I doubt one more would make much difference. People who like 7mm cartridges buy 7mm cartridges, people who like 6.8 cartridges buy 6.8 cartridges, and people who like both buy both. If you are talking about 6.8/.270 in general, the fact that the army will be phasing in 6.8x51 over the next few years will probably boost the caliber's overall popularity.

I see this as being slight incremental improvement over what is currently out there but with the right marketing and hype it will probably do well. I guess a similar comparison would be 260 rem vs 6.5 cm, incremental was all took to make it one of the most successful cartridges in the last 20 years. Not throwing shade on the Creedmoor, I love it and it has become my favorite deer sized game cartridges, probably main reason is its so enjoyable to shoot and just kills deer well. As for the 7 PRC, not sure that this is much better than 7 Mag or even something like 300 WSM. Time will tell...

The lack of a rebated rim is considered an advantage. I just watched a video in which George Gardner of GA Precision was interviewed. He stated that he preferred non-rebated-rim cartridges for better feeding and that some rifle builders refuse to build repeating rifles for the WSM and SAUM rebated cartridges. The PRC cartridges are based on the RCM cases which have max body size of 0.532", the same diameter as the rim.

I don’t get too excited about the cartridge of the month that seems to be the case these days. But…this is different. The 7mm diameter seems to fill the sweet spot in ballistic efficiency considering the propellants and bullets available, and this particular case seems to maximize all the variables. I’ve got a 90’s model 700 in 7 Mag that might be in line for a new tube in 7PRC. Here’s my problem…I’m not a “long range” hunter, and most other folks aren’t either. I’m satisfied to keep all shots within 400 yards and I’m wondering if the 7PRC with a slower twist barrel coupled with a screaming 140 grain premium bullet, might be the ultimate point blank range rifle for shooting out to a quarter mile without scrambling for the range finder? What do you guys think? Most of the information concerning the 7mmPRC seems to omit the lighter weight bullets…
@davidhenson58762 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention- that the reason this cartridge grabbed my attention in the first place… is that it headspaces on the shoulder vs trying to headspace on a belt while trying to keep shoulder tolerance to a minimum. A more solid handlloading proposition.

We're not really seeing new cartridges, but upgraded platforms. The 6.5 creed. is just a 260 rem. with faster rate of twist. The 6.8 western is a 270 wsm with a faster rate of twist and both have longer necks for longer bullets. If you,re punching paper at 500 to 1000 yards the new and improved might help, but hunting 450 yards and under probably not. New bullets like the Barnes LRX lets you get the same energy out of say a 130gr. 30 cal as a conventional 150gr. 30 cal., and velocity and bullet design make more energy than any other factors.

6.8 western is a fantastic cartridge
@leifhoklin26812 жыл бұрын
I predict that 6.8 Western is not long for this world. Yes it provides a means of shooting heavier, high B.C. .277 bullets at higher velocities than the .270 Win could push them (if the .270 Win were able to stabilize them). However, it just doesn’t add enough utility given the plethora of cartridges available that already do the job better . The obvious comparison to the 6.8 Western for backcountry western hunting is the 7mm Remington Magnum. There is no added value or performance gain to choose the 6.8 over the 7 magnum…unless you’re a twerp that has to shoot a short-action cartridge. I’m a .270 guy. It’s my favorite cartridge, and I’m aware of its capabilities and weaknesses. I’m also a whitetail hunter in the big woods of northern Mn. I don’t need a rifle optimized for killing 700 pound elk at 600 yards. I think there are better calibers than .277 for shooting elk at those extended ranges. IMO, .284 cal is the ground floor for suitably long-range elk guns. I think .30 cal magnums are far better choices, actually. Why play around with smaller bore options that are moderate magnums at best (I.e. 6.5 PRC, 6.8 Western), when you could shoot a .300 Win Mag, .300 PRC, .300 ultra, etc? Idk, just my 2 cents.
@phild98132 жыл бұрын
Hornady has been winning with marketing in the last decade, so I think it may just kill the 6.8 western. Performance is probably so similar that it may not matter. Unfortunate, as I like the 270 caliber rounds more than 7s. No reason in particular.
@JAKesler2 жыл бұрын
@@leifhoklin2681 I think what alot of these new cartridges and moderate magnums bring to the table is efficiency. To get the most out of a design. And I think they are important for having more effective cartridges going forward. I could probably take anything with a 300 prc but if I don't need that much power or only occasionally go for larger game sometimes having that flexible rifle is a better 1 gun situation than the largest calibers

@stevehurt56262 жыл бұрын
As a professional working in this field, I can honestly say this is the first new cartridge to excite me in 40 years. Case capacity is spot on - case length to handle the long high BC bullets with good case/cartridge to magazine relationship - right calibre, right velocity and perfect barrel twist. Why did it take sooooo long? Couldn't ask for a better balanced medium/large game cartridge. I won't be getting suckered in to the ultra heavy bullets though, or the confused Target/Match BC's applied to hunting application. (This was a bit of an unfortunate oversell). A GOOD copper bullet weighing 150 grains will have the same displacement as a 180 gr jacketed lead, and will do a better job, with less recoil. Perfect for my hunting application. Hurry up and make the @#$% things please. If these things had been developed 20, 30 or 40 years ago, there wouldn't be near so many other 7 mm cartridges on the market at all, and I suspect a good many of the current ones are now headed for obsolescence. Hornady should be congratulated. Coming from a competitor, there can be no higher praise.

I am a fellow fan of the 7mms. And I really hope the 7mm PRC brings the .284s into the spotlight. I think it is long overdue. The PRS and long range hunting markets are exploding, but for whatever reason, the caliber with the best long range bullets has been largely ignored in favor of 6.5s and .308s. It has never made sense to me, since the 7mm is arguably better than either of those. The best BCs, the best combination of external ballistics, terminal ballistics, and recoil. The .284s are just stacked with so many good cartridges that just don't get the credit they deserve. Going back over 100 years to San Juan Hill and the experience of the Rough Riders facing down the superior 7x57 Mauser to the present, with the 7mm SAUM fading into obscurity even though it beats the 6.5 PRC in every respect; the .284 Win, the 7mm-08, the .280 AI...so many good cartridges that have worked so hard to remain relevant despite offering class leading ballistics. So again, we are talking BCs here. The 7mm is a sweet spot. You can get higher BCs in larger calibers, but you have to get over 230 gr in .30 cal and usually over 280 gr or so in .338 to do so, and pushing those heavy of bullets as fast as a 7mm Rem Mag or a 7mm PRC can push their bullets leads to quite an increase in recoil. For example, considering Hornady's line up, between the 6.5mm, the 7mm, and the .308 cal, the highest BC SST is the 162 gr 7mm, the highest BC ELD-X is the 175 gr 7mm, the highest BC ELD-M is the 180 gr 7mm, and the only Atip that can beat the 190 gr 7mm is the 250 gr .308 cal. As dominant as the .284s are for BCs, it actually makes no sense for Hornady to have not introduced the 7mm PRC first, because it is absolutely to best of the bunch right out of the gate.

284’s/7mm’s are still the choice in the F-class world and for good reason. PRS guys are all about no recoil coming from the 6mm.

I have already necked a 300prc down to 7mm and have been playing around with it for awhile and what I have noticed it has the same ballistics as my 28 nosler with the same wheat of bullets. The only thing that makes them a little different is that I was able to get 800 rounds through my Bartlein barrel before it burnt out and had to do a barrel swap but that is a 200 round increase over my 28 nosler. With my 28 nosler I was only able to get 600 rounds before the barrel is burnt out. Other then that small difference they are ballistically the same.

I don't blame you for not even mentioning the 7mm WSM, as it has ballistics so identical in a shorter case that it would only promote the 7WSM.

Sounds like a great new cartridge, I don’t have any 7mm guns but for those that already have a 28 Nosler, couldn’t you just back it off a little and get the same numbers, you don’t have to run max loads do you? Factory ammo is watered down anyway, if the box says you will get 2960 with this new 7mm PRC you’ll probably end up around 2850-2900 real world speeds. I’ll bet you can push it to 3000 with hand loads though. If Elk is on the menu I personally prefer a 30 cal, but the 7mm works fine. It’s a good size if you only have one gun.
@WantingWilderness2 жыл бұрын
The other benefit is the 1:8 twist rate. The SAAMI spec on the 28 Nosler is 1:9 which is too slow to really stabilize those heavy bullets. I had my 28 cut with a 1:8.25 twist.

Two words: meat damage. At that velocity a large 7mm 180gr will do a heck of a lot of bruising and meat damage partly through hydraulic shock. No need for such high energy loadings except maybe fir dangerous plains game. A 140gr 6.5 is a high BC combo and at “only” 2600 fps carries more than enough velocity to 500 yds to cleanly drop deer (or most other large game). The 7prc is also likely to have short barrel life at those mv’s

Thanks for covering this new cartridge. For me it's just too close to what I already have. Spending a few thousand dollars and that small of an advantage, the benefits aren't enough. Now if you were thinking of buying a 7 mm mag, then it is a wise consideration. With this cartridge you are betting on it being commercially available everywhere and it may not be like that. Also we all know these rifle companies would sure be happy to sell you a rifle every year and that's really why these cartridges go to market.

Ha, I just exchanged emails with Hornady customer support asking them if there was a 7MM PRC in the near future, and they told me not yet, but product releases were due in October… I’ve been hoping for 7PRC and was on the fence about the 300 PRC, mostly because my interest in it was more for Long Range Competition with Hunting secondary. I think it’s going to be a sweet spot PRC cartridge.

In my mind it is the out of the box accuracy of all of the PRC rounds using factory ammo and factory rifles. If you are a long range hunter, past 500 yards it isn't just the drop, velocity, and energy that matter. Accuracy can become the bottleneck out past 500 yards. If my factory 7mm mag shoots 1.25 to 1.5 moa out of the box, that's up to a 15" group at 1000 yards. If a factory PRC rifle / cartridge shoots .75 moa out of the box, thats a 7.5" group at 1000 yards.

About 4 years ago I got the crazy notion that it would be fun to wildcat a round. As a daydreamed and imagined what it would be like to wildcat around, I thought what would be the round that I would create? What would it be? And this is pretty much the exact round that I dreamed up. Of course what I’m referring to is just dreaming I never actually did anything about it. Lol

I’m hoping it will get support from adg and Peterson or lapua so we could get great brass or it would be the same story as the 7 lrm. I think the biggest complaint with 7 lrm is the brass. Only hornady brass so maybe 4 firings?? Also, I’m pleased with the neck length! It should keep the flame into the brass neck and not so much on the barrel throat.

For the 7mm PRC, if you were loading 150 CX or the 150 tipped tsx or the 140/168 lrx would you see an issue with using large rifle magnum on all? I’m having a little trouble wrapping my head around the BC of the 6.8 v 7 in the chart at about 8 minutes. The 6.8 is a smaller diameter with a very small decrease in bullet weight but its BC drops by over 15%. I sure would think those numbers should be a lot closer, and I suspect functionality they are.
@backfire2 жыл бұрын
It’s really just because there is no high BC ELD-Match bullet for the 6.8 western. So it’s using a Berger in the comparison.

I like the innovation and all of that, especially when it comes to precision shooters - y’all have fun! But for hunting, I just don’t think this is any better necessarily. I don’t think most people are looking to shoot 910 yards at an animal, nor do I think that heavier bullets are needed in a 7mm. Most of the people looking for something bigger for say dangerous game will go with 300, 338, 7RUM, etc. I just don’t have the same optimism for this round as you, but I also hope that I’m wrong.
