The boss wanted to keep player away from the center so an attack would be more effective. A very low window of opportunity to make a flawless victory.

From launching you away when he realized he can simply kill you when he’s in a better spot, to trapping you into chomping you dead, to preventing you from coming back, and then shielding himself when you’re revived, he isn’t exactly the dumbest villain.
