I have a similar situation with our horse. We're keeping him at a horse ranch a few miles away until we can build our new place in the country. He's in a pasture with another gelding. There are 2 other pastures next to his. My wife and I go every day to check on him and take him carrots and cookies. Of course we have to treat the other horses as well. Now when ever the horses see our truck they come running to the fence like kids chasing an ice cream truck. Now the joke is every time we drive up they come running say "It's the carrot truck, it's the carrot truck".

Hey that rooster is quite a handsome one. The hens are pretty too. Thanks for sharing your morning routine of feeding the horses etc. And I saw that big hawk too. Bet he is pretty impressive looking when you can get a closer look at it. I saw a hawk once that I bet was as big as the one hanging around your place. I was working outside one morning and I heard a hawk screech and it landed in some brush about 15 feet from me and came up and flew off with a big rat. Was a beautiful hawk .

Thanks, Rick! Been watching your videos for about eight months now and always love them. I saw an article this morning that hurt my stomach. A colorado rancher has bought approximately 1700 mustangs over the last few years with the stipulation that they should go to good homes only to turn around and sell them all off to slaughter for a profit of $100 per animal. All I could think about was that each one had the potential to be like Mr. T. It simultaneously breaks my heart and makes me sick. Thank you - from the bottom of my heart - for all you do.

Yep. Winter's coming on. Mr. T's furring out and your shorts are getting longer. :) My uncle has a horse that has ruined several back door knobs. If the horse sees him at the table with his coffee, the horse thinks he should be able to come in and hunker a spell. He's made it half way into the kitchen a time or two. Love walking out to the pasture and whistling for my boys. They'll both answer (Festus is high pitched, Zeus very bass) and walk up to me sounding like two diesel trucks idling and only their nostrils moving. It's a horsey, "Good morning, Mom!!" and it never gets old. On the chicken hawk, as soon as you said that, my mind automatically went to the old Foghorn Leghorn cartoons...."I say, I say, I say, Boy!!" They don't make 'em like that anymore.

+Think Like A Horse Awwww, that's alright. I got to thinking about it later, and felt bad for even asking. You might not want to open that can of worms.....you'd have everybody and their brother asking for a shout out to their horses and getting offended and talking smack about you on horse forum if you didn't, lol. :) Guess what? I saw the most beautiful sight the other day. I had the boys out on long lines enjoying some late orchard grass and Festus (who nearly died early this year with irritable bowel syndrome and unreal diarrhea) left me the most beautiful pile of normal horse apple horse poop under our cedar tree. His diarrhea cleared up, but his poop before was loose, almost like a thick cow pie. I was so tickled to see "horse apples" I literally danced a little jig and nearly took a pic of it to email the vet. I'm sure Festus thought, "Well, that's it. Mom's finally gone off her rocker....for feet's sake, it's poop!!" :)

It's a Red-tailed Hawk (chicken hawk), if he/she is calling they are flying/soaring around. Females can be substantially larger than males so you might have a female. Their wingspan isn't any bigger but their body length is.
@ThinkLikeAHorse9 жыл бұрын
+KVProduction92 The are protected here in Texas, can't shoot them unless they are actively engaged in killing your livestock, my neighbor shot one carrying off a chicken and hit him, the hawk dropped the chicken and it lived and the hawk flew off.

@KVProduction929 жыл бұрын
+Think Like A Horse I don't know why they would be protected, they are far from being in any kind of danger and needing protection. (I do get it I guess, if they said never-mind you can shoot them their numbers would be demolished) I think it's illegal everywhere, some Federal Law if I'm not mistaken. It will take a lot to convince them that they shouldn't hunt on your land, you have a large pasture for the horses and your neighbors have the same, it is their preferred hunting grounds. More so if they have managed to nab some chickens as it would be an easier meal then tracking down a field mouse. A couple of weeks of doing what you were could work though, any time they sit down. Some people say hanging CD's from fishing line under trees or places where they wind will blow them around works, when the light hits them supposedly it throws light and throws off the hawks - I don't think it does really but that's what people say. Stacking pallets up on cement blocks would work, at least it would give the chickens somewhere to hide around the place. Probably two by two, stacked two high and two long. Sorry, I love horses but I also love birds. Worked with hawks and owls in high school, we have a rehab program from them.

Wow thank you! I have been listening to that bird screech for a long time not knowing what it is and now I do thanks to you. Didn't know that was a chicken hawk. I'm used to the coyotes,they don't bother us much but that bird screech was driving me crazy. I have to play like 007 to sneak out of my house so the horses won't hear me. Someimes I'll put on an old wig or hat but they blow my cover every time.There is no excuse from them not getting to eat first so no matter what I try they end of eating first. If they can't see me the minute they hear my boot on the rocks my cover is blown and they neighing starts. Breakfast is loud around at my house.

Hehe, same here! My painted Quarter Horse mare Spirit hangs out in the barn and nickers the very instant she hears footsteps on our porch. A few of the boards are a little loose and slam loudly against the boards running crosswise underneath them. Her nicker is somewhat deep, sounds like it comes from within her chest while that cute nose quivers and she licks her lips, ears pricked. If the barn gate's open, then she walks through our big backyard straight to her favorite spot against the porch.

red tails generally dont squeel whenthey re perched they do so when flying so look for him flying over head, they dont want to make noise once they are perched and stalking, to avoid giving away their location. we have two red shoulder hawks, red tails and coopers hawks and they come in here all the time and perch in a tree with some dead branches lookinf for all the moles and voles and ground hogs we have. they dont make noise when perched unless it is a immature hawk just leaving the nest they are very noisy.

@ThinkLikeAHorse9 жыл бұрын
+Janiel L lots of factors, not just height, how much do you weigh, how well do you ride, how good is your balance, how well can you stay out of the way of the horse, I like big horses since the bigger they are the less impact I have on them, I can ride a smaller horse but it is harder on the horse and easier for me to interfere, pull it off balance or make it trip or stumble.

On a couple of occasions I've come upon a hawkbehind my house while I'm riding, and I interrupted him/herin their kill (dismembering, I'm guessing, a rabbit) on the ground, while the other time, it spotted us and took off carryingsomething that looked alive yet. Amazing to see......and those 4 leggeds? How 'bout pulling up the driveway andwanting to maybe just finish a good song you're listening to(or talk radio) and the horse's just stare you out... often leadingto banging the gate etc. etc. I swear, THEY OWN US... :) by the way, I always miss you... :)

First of all I will like to say you love your horses, and let them be their selves. But I'm confused you said in one video the you give the horses hay first then grain. In this video you gave them grain first. 1) I don't know anything about handling any animal let alone a horse 2) Is their any difference what you feed them first
