On the ground, there are positions, transitions and submissions. In the category of transitions, there are sweeps, escapes & reversals. This video focuses on wrestling up, which is a specific type of reversal, using wrestling concepts to come up from a bottom position into a takedown or return. Not an exhaustive list by any means, but I feel like these options shown give a decent illustration of how wrestling up works.

As a wrestler who’s new to Jiu Jitsu, I found myself naturally getting into this single-leg position (and often feel guilty as I’m just doing what I I know and not using Jiu Jitsu). The only detail I’d add is to shelf the leg before driving across, as it will prevent him from using a whizzer to get himself back in the game.

Great 👍🏼 stuff - like the discussion regarding creating then saving space…some of that I do instinctively without thinking about it…that wrestle up from bottom of mount it looks like you’ve got a heel hook right there, too…that half imanari roll looks perfect for an old guy like me 😜

@@KnightJiuJitsu so maybe their jiu-jitsu was fine... but they lacked the experience and ability to diagnose the problem and express it... not that they hated me and wanted me to get stuck in side control for the rest of my life.

Great stuff as usual Prof. Hey, I have some questions since you are one of the few BJJ guys, now days, that still takes the self-defence aspect quite seriously. I have most of your videos from BJJ Fanatics and think they are very good. However, watching this sitting Vs standing vid got me thinking again about the very simple, common and highly dangerous scenario of kicks and stomps from a standing opponent in a real self-defense situation. Considering how common and dangerous these kinds of attacks are , I don't think BJJ gives it the attention it warrants. Even with self-defence orientated instructors like you, I don't remember you covering that topic- at least not in depth. I use the old Pride FC , Japanese type MMA rules as a lens into how simple and dangerous kicks and stomps can be against even a well trained BJJ guys using their open guards. The old Shoot Boxe guys knocked out a lot of good fighters or really hurt them with what looked like mechanically simple stomps and punts-often right through their opponent's guards. They were well trained and practised of course, but what they did does not seem that far removed from what any street fighter might improvise in a serious self-defence situation. They seemed to use almost "passing theory" to have stomps that went through, over and around their opponent's guards - and many paid a heavy price. Now days with the UFC rules, I think a lot of people have forgotten this danger . What do you think? I think this aspect of self-defence needs a serious upgrade. I have trained with only one instructor, Sylvio Berhing, who has a couple "worst case scenario" type ground kick defences in his "gangorra" (teeter totter) drilling system, and while beautifully smooth, I think are pretty high risk and based on sport techniques- so their should be a lot of options in between. Are you familiar with his method? I think this could be an interesting and important topic for a new series or at least part of one. or maybe just some ideas on your channel here. I hope you will consider sharing with us your perspective on this important self-defence topic.
