@Archaeos0up it's cornstarch. I agree it is annoying but the amount of outrage over this has been a bit silly. I haven't seen you say a word about the mass destruction in Gaza. You comparing some cornstarch is astonishing. The worst crime against archaeological heritage since ISIS is happening right now and it isn't JST doing it, it is the IDF.

Why is climate linked to Hamas (official democratically voted in govt of 'Palestine'?), (not a country recognised by the UN, Olympic Committee, FIFA, you name it.) It starts with a T and ends with an ism.

The problem is that news coverage often buries deep the information that the paint is just some starch-based colouring that will come off with the next rain or can be rinsed. Even saying that it was vandalised suggests some kind of damage. But damaged or not, it's still a bad idea. How about they spend all that time volunteering to plant trees or with other ecological projects? There are plenty of positive things which can be done. Promote solutions, don't create more problems.

Someone said this to me: they arent trying to gain sympathy for their organisation/cause. They are simply trying to spark debate. Which is certainly a strategy. Just stop oil never get coverage when they specifically target oil companies so this is what they are doing.

How to make people despise your intentions. Their tactics are totally counterproductive. It makes me question their mentality. You don't win a discussion by pissing off the other person. This isn't about oil. It's about them.

My views are probably unpopular about this. I find the effort to make such a huge statement while being responsible enough to damage nothing, is brilliant. I am also pleased to see people with convictions that are for improving rather than the more unsavory kind that is closer to bigotry. This generation has things to say & we should be listening instead of shaming them, because they were convicted enough to make it a worldwide statement. Being accountable for any law’s broken should be no issue for anyone with the conviction to protest on such an international stage. I see this as good, as people in the world expecting accountability for bad actions, even if theirs was not exactly good either lol. The reasons behind it have integrity & that shouldn’t get lost in the superficial stuff that has silenced voices throughout history. We should all expect our leaders to be doing things in the best interests of the people, not just the profits.

I appreciate your kind and measured thoughts. I do worry that this attitude emboldens them though, they are overly emotional and aren't interested in discourse, they make simplistic and quite frankly outright stupid demands, claim that they have it all figured out and desecrate that which we hold dear. How long until they make a mistake or decide to take it further and do permanent damage to an unique treasure? They have already done damage to the public's access to these items and in the public's raised heart rates and worry.

@@ShoppingAttic Yeah, I've been noticing it since the 90's, people sometimes don't put the middle line in the bottom of the symbol, making it a Mercedes logo instead of a peace sign.

I am a bit disapointed, maybe you could ask them? They do not expect to be viewed positively, this strategy is not for people to join their cause. Its to lets say "activate" people who are aware of their cause but are not doing much. This forces there main stream media to talk about this, it brings it to the public discussion and point out that they do of course all the "actual" protests, that the ones who are against this often don't have argument against their cause etc.

If we care so much about ancient monuments, then, how does climate change affect them? Acid rain, flooding, rising sea levels? I never even gave it much thought, but JSO did something poignant there.

This reminds me of other cases where activists have chosen to take ill-advised actions that only harm a good cause by drawing condemnation and outright hatred, e.g. Greenpeace at Nazca and Black Lives Matter in the US. I'm sure it's exciting and self-affirming to be a hero saving the world (or perhaps finding a compatible love interest), but a little forethought might be wise. Maybe I'm a small bit cynical.
