Thank you so much for stating clearly that both of these chickens are hybrids or crosses...neither is GMO or heritage. So many good channels are giving bad info on this, and I really appreciate that you researched enough to make sure you don't misinform your viewers.

Those FR's were so flippin' cute zooming about like that so soon. They were like small children let loose in a park playground racing around to see everything before they can settle down to play. Lol. Sounded like that rain was really coming down.

I appreciate your opinion highly! Y’all are sensible folks and we can draw conclusions based on your information. We’ve always had excellent experiences with Rhode Island Reds. They’re big for meat and lay good sized eggs. The hens were good mamas. But I’m always looking for good information and I trust y’all to provide it. God bless!

Kept back a few of our Red ranger/Freedom rangers when our flock was attacked by a dog. They were approximately 7 or 8 weeks old. They had been fed as a meat chicken. They are huge. Have had no health side effects from it. They lay huge eggs, and have went broody, then quickly got off the nest once all the chicks had hatched and I had removed them, to the brooder. Sweet and friendly chickens. We have thoroughly enjoyed them! (Linda)

This is great stuff...I was trying to explain the two breeds to my wife and this will be a huge learning tool for her. She is all on board with moving to Idaho now...more than I am!! She wants to leave in months, I'm more conservative, thinking in a few years. We need to be debt free (as you recommend) so we can downsize our incomes and do well.

It is still pretty warm here in GA (70 at night). Decided to raise 18 cornish rock chick straight run (for meat) and 10 road island red chick pullets (for eggs). I started them out using water tubs with heat lamps for the first two weeks. Then moved to my large empty rabbit cages. Three weeks in it is amazing how fast the cornish chicks have grown. We purchased our chicks from the local feed store. We lost two cornish chicks within the first couple days (maybe should have used the medicated feed). Everyone is very healthy now. I forgot to only feed the cornish chicks 12 hours after the first couple weeks so I need to adjust their schedule today.

Good :) I want to know too.. I am a "dye in the wool" Cornish cross grower too.. Maybe you can help me change my mind... We too do the one bag of medicated feed, and then we change to a game bird starter and then grower which is very high in protein. My dogs love baby chicks and are over here looking for where the baby chick sounds are coming from..... :) thanks for taking us along..

Straight runs are about 50/50 , you need to separate the fr, to get a true comparison, easy by checking flight feathers . Males have all the same size, hens have two different sizes

This will be fun to watch and interesting to see which ones you guys prefer. I have raised both, from a hatchery near me, so no going through the mail, which is nice. I found that the rangers seem more like regular chickens, they free range better. The Cornish x were like eating monsters and didn’t want to move around much(so I put their feed across the run from their water to make them move!). The hatchery told me to take their food away at night so they wouldn’t gain too fast and break their legs. I didn’t lose any and no broken legs. As to taste, I prefer the Cornish x, my husband prefers the rangers, as they taste more like dark meat. They do make amazing chicken soup, though, I’ll give them that! So, I would say raise Cornish x for fried/grilled chicken and some rangers for slow roasted chicken and chicken soup. Just my opinion. I love you guys!

Try weighing each boxful of chicks at the beginning, and subtract the weight of the box. Then weekly (Or periodically) weigh each individually and add for the total weight of each breed. You can then come up with an average weight in addition to your max, min, and median weights right up till they are processed.

All that I have raised is the Freedom Rangers do grow out slower than the crosses. But in the long run the Rangers will lay eggs pretty good where the crosses don't lay good at all. But that is me and my out look. And the Rangers are so much prettier than the ugly crosses. But they are tasty the crosses. God bless.

I'm really interested to see your results! We raised "red rangers" from McMurray one year - our only experience with hatchery meat birds. After 11 or 12 weeks, our biggest bird weighed 2 lbs!
