The HBO John Adams miniseries starring Paul Giamatti is a good example of how a historical biopic can work in that format, covering a different stage in life during each episode.

I loved John Adams, and I was a little surprised they got Paul Giamatti in it. I also think it is a little under rated. It should have gotten way better advertisement for it.

While English-speaking critics might show some leniency towards Ridley Scott's work, potentially influenced by respect for him, the French media has been unsparing in their criticism, branding the film as anything from 'dull' to 'Barbie and Ken during the French Revolution', and denouncing it as mirroring the (british) anti french propaganda of the time: Scott's portrayal of Napoleon as a detached, low-energy, and choleric figure, echoing English propaganda of the era, starkly contrasts with the historical reality. Napoleon was a dynamic young leader, renowned not only as a brilliant military strategist but also as a transformative figure in civil governance. His far-reaching reforms, such as the introduction of the Napoleonic Code, revolutionized the legal system and are still in use today in many countries. He also modernized administrative structures, established the central bank of France, and initiated significant educational reforms, including the creation of the lycée system (highschools). These contributions had a profound and lasting impact on France and beyond. I suppose the frustration is due to the fact that it's usual in movies made by anglos, who do not seem to be able to get rid of centuries old anti french propaganda. For example, in 'The King,' the French prince is portrayed as a foolish caricature, while Henry V is a young nice lad. Basically a swap of characters when compared to historical reality. Or 'Dunkirk' which somehow manage to omit that the 'miracle of Dunkirk' was actually due to French soldiers catastrophic losses to block the german advance in the city for days, and instead ride with the 'little boat' propaganda (the civilian little boats had historically a very limited impact).

As a history student, this movie left me with a a lot to be desired, would’ve worked much better as an HBO series. ALOT of Napoleon’s story was skipped over and a third of this movie was basically just a drama between him and Josephine. When he invades Russia it doesn’t feel like a decision a power hungry dictator character would make; it feels like “oh in history this is what Napoleon does next so we’ll do it and see how that affects his relationship with Josephine”.

The film comes off like a parody at points. Seriously. Almost like Police Academy type stuff. So much so I was actually wondering if Scott was doing it on purpose for some reason. And Phoenix plays the role stiffer than a corpse. He's monotone and looks half asleep the whole thing. One of the oddest experiences I can ever remember in seeing a film that has Phoenix as the lead and Scott directing.

His non linear structure of storytelling really builds up that tension, it always has you engaged and at the end it leaves with this really world changing question.. OMG HI Jaby and Achara I'm a huge fan by the way I love your videos so much keep up the good work and I'm so happy that you guys enjoyed Napoleon the movie and I can't not wait to see more movie reactions and the actors did a phenomenal job by the way and it's very interesting on what's happening in history and here is some information about him sorry it's a lot. we love you guys 💜🩷 Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica into a family descending from Italian nobility. He was resentful of the French monarchy, and supported the French Revolution in 1789 while serving in the French army, trying to spread its ideals to his native Corsica. He rose rapidly in the ranks after saving the governing French Directory by firing on royalist insurgents. In 1796, he began a military campaign against the Austrians and their Italian allies, scoring decisive victories, and became a national hero. Two years later he led a military expedition to Egypt that served as a springboard to political power. He engineered a coup in November 1799 and became First Consul of the Republic. In 1804, to consolidate and expand his power, he crowned himself Emperor of the French. Differences with the United Kingdom meant France faced the War of the Third Coalition by 1805. Napoleon shattered this coalition with victories in the Ulm campaign and at the Battle of Austerlitz, which led to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1806, the Fourth Coalition took up arms against him. Napoleon defeated Prussia at the battles of Jena and Auerstedt, marched the Grande Armée into Eastern Europe, and defeated the Russians in June 1807 at Friedland, forcing the defeated nations of the Fourth Coalition to accept the Treaties of Tilsit. Two years later, the Austrians challenged the French again during the War of the Fifth Coalition, but Napoleon solidified his grip over Europe after triumphing at the Battle of Wagram. Hoping to extend the Continental System, his embargo against Britain, Napoleon invaded the Iberian Peninsula and declared his brother Joseph the King of Spain in 1808. The Spanish and the Portuguese revolted in the Peninsular War aided by a British army, culminating in defeat for Napoleon's marshals. Napoleon launched an invasion of Russia in the summer of 1812. The resulting campaign witnessed the catastrophic retreat of Napoleon's Grande Armée. In 1813, Prussia and Austria joined Russian forces in a Sixth Coalition against France, resulting in a large coalition army defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig. The coalition invaded France and captured Paris, forcing Napoleon to abdicate in April 1814. He was exiled to the island of Elba, between Corsica and Italy. In France, the Bourbons were restored to power. Napoleon escaped in February 1815 and took control of France. The Allies responded by forming a Seventh Coalition, which defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. The British exiled him to the remote island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic, where he died in 1821 at the age of 51.

Well, we have the 4 to 4.5 hours cut to come. The gripes people have, that cut will solve, but there was no way the studio would let Scott put out a 4+ hrs movie. It sounds like the film has the same issue Kindom Of Heaven had. The released version moved way too fast and Bloom went from a no-one to kick-ass leader way too fast. Plus there was the whole boy king thing which the directors cut fixed. Anyway, the director's cut changed that film from a 6.5...maybe 7/10 to an 8 or 8.5/10.

I would not say this is the movie for people that like war movies as it is not at all. Battles are more like background noise for a love story or weird relationship however you want to call it. 70% of movie is that, Napoleon and Josephine and I doubt war movie or history fans would enjoy that. Movie is a mess and you described it great, it is a reel of Napoleons life and it is disconnected and focusing on wrong things, even if message is what you think it is. How movie presented it it is a question but they had material to make it super on the nose. I hoped it would be great but knowing how big portion of his life they cover it was obvious it will be. Covering to much, focusing on wrong details, could not be any different. A huge letdown. If you want a good representation of Napoleonic movie pick Waterloo, at least covers that part and focuses on it trying to stay loyal to source material for better or for worse.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but if the point was to show how everyone suffers while the rich and power plot and scheme, then this is grade-school level writing. Have we become so infantilized by popular culture that such a trite platitude makes up the main theme of a movie?

Terrible Mickey Mouse movie made by those who have no idea about history for those who have no idea about history... and even history aside, the movie is boring and dull.

I don't understand when people say I didn't feel anything. They have become so senstisised to emotionally manipulative and preachy stuff that they can't comprehend anything else. Why underappreciate that Scott's achievement of balancing grandiose and human flaws of a subject that so many great directors failed to??

Attention to detail? Unfortunately the detail is wrong. Joaquin was too old at age 50 to play 26 year old Napoleon meeting the 32 year old Josephine. I think Ridley Scott was hoping no one knew anything about Napoleon. Napoleon's story is fascinating. He's at the center of one the first revolutions in Europe that saw the replacement of hereditary god supported monarchies with a republican form of government. This movie was boring . And just so so wrong.

This guy is so desperate for access and to be a Hollywood insider that even when he doesn’t like a movie, he’ll still tell his viewers to go pay to see it in the cinemas. LOL He did the same thing with the last Indiana Jones movie.

The synopsis says it's basically about his toxic relationship with his girl. ****did they show the haitians whipping their ass in 1804? 😂 Love you in the hat Achara!

You could have had the Napoleon as Anakin thing going, and explained how France was the first large country of consequence in the Western World to throw off Monarchy AS A REPUBLIC (America was a backwatery frontier), and this guy came from out of nowhere to export that liberty to the rest of Europe but then betrayed those ideals and seized power for himself, to the eventual ruin of the people who had FINALLY made the powerful folk accountable to them for once. That would be an actually true thing. A character arky grand tragedy thing that I just told you in a fraction of the time that this movie took to tell you nothing. That'll be $30, please.

NB was poorly written, portrayed, and acted...for a man who reconvinced a country to follow him to almost certain doom AFTER failing in russia and being exiled you would have never known he was charismatic....movie was dull, boring, and soulless...u can tell ridley had phoenix take a back seat and purposefully sideline the char for josephine char to shine. ur looking too far into this...ridley is british and ran w/the propaganda 19th century version of NB...and i enjoyed last duel with its slow build up and ending. whats is ridley strange obsession with portraying military legends as sexually inept? 6:19 this is NOT the movie for u if ur n2 war movies...i didnt even expect a war movie going in...just didnt expect a hit piece full of mockery that spits on history.

You guys know that the actors and people who are in the trenches doing this film don't have a say in when the film gets released? Oscar bait? If they would've released it during the spring or summer then y'all would be saying "what wrong with the film "cause they didn't release it during the fall? Just like you were complaining about Deadpool and black panther being released in fall and not summer. And They were marvel two biggest hits. Movie releases aren't done the way they were done back in the day. Maybe some of you need to adjust your way of critiquing movies instead of putting them in a box.

Two different films that should be judged differently. This story was intended to be an Oscar-type film with depth and artistic vision, it wasn't just a casual entertainment, so it's only fair that it be judged with a more critical eye.

Of course these two are going to be way more critical now without any brand or studio to please to .And Apple tv plus dosent mind what people say about the movie that will likely hit streaming really fast unlike Marvel and DC studios and their rabid fanbase. You gotta keep getting those invites back.Even Achara puts on her " critical hat" in Napoleon form.
