@J4ME5_
@J4ME5_ 19 күн бұрын
@@LordVolkov It's not "helping" him...The scene in *Falling Down* where the man with the sign that says "Not Economically Viable" says, "Don't forget me," is poignant because it encapsulates the underlying theme of societal abandonment and the desperation of those who have been marginalized by an unforgiving economic system. In this scene "D-Fens" encounters a man who represents the forgotten people of society-those who have been cast aside because they are no longer considered "useful" or "profitable" within the framework of capitalism. The sign "Not Economically Viable" is a stark, literal statement about how society views people like him: as expendable, unwanted, and irrelevant. When the man asks, "Don't forget me," it’s a cry for recognition and validation. It highlights the human need to be seen and remembered, even by someone like Foster, who himself is struggling with feelings of disconnection and rage against the system. This moment underscores the broader critique of how modern society often discards those who don’t fit into its economic machinery, reducing people to their economic output rather than recognizing their inherent worth as human beings. The poignancy lies in the contrast between the man's plea for remembrance and the cold, impersonal world that deems him "not viable." It's a powerful reminder of the individuals who suffer silently, invisible to most, yet desperately seeking acknowledgment in a world that has left them behind. This brief interaction not only deepens the complexity of Foster's character but also forces the audience to confront the harsh realities of societal neglect and the human cost of economic efficiency. So you see, it's not helping him, it's a shared experience. I get the feeling that you're just trying to shape this into your own worldview, possibly a racially charged one, and that's just fine that's what movies are all about.

@@J4ME5_ You said - "in a way his Rampage is also "Justice" for that man." I was asking about how D-Fens causing terror and doing violence helped a man denied a bank loan. At the time this movie came out Michael Douglas’s character represented the frustrations of the everyday average working Joe trying to adjust to a changing America that most baby boomers didn’t grow up in and was starting to not recognize anymore. Of COURSE we knew his actions in the movie was wrong as he had clearly gone over the deep end but most people (especially boomers) at the time thought ‘yeah that’s not appropriate what he’s doing BUT I completely understand’ .

This movie has so many layers. The scene with the construction site and the rocket launcher also conveyed, for me, a popular sentiment of being a father. The little boy took on a type of "son" for the main character, and he was engaging in the trope of a father and son playing a parody of the shooting toy rockets into the air. It was a common hobby for fathers and sons to buy toy rockets and fire them into the sky, being amazed by how high they go. This scene was a twist on that, instead of a rocket, we have a rocket launcher. The father worked on missiles, but the son has to teach him how to operate a rocket launcher. It also showed how the innocence and wonder of "launching" rockets is gone from the children of this era. You could see the shock in William Foster's face at how knowledgeable the boy was about the weapon.

“Don’t forget me” Michael Douglas’s character nods. A simple line with a deeper meaning, the message that’s being conveyed is don’t forget about us! The average working Joe that did EVERYTHING that we were supposed to do, played by the rules and STILL thrown to the side (obsolete) when society decides they’re done with us, that’s not right! This movie has a lot of layers on rewatch.

The mom and pop "hood" liquor stores were/ are NOTORIOUSLY guilty of overcharging. Mainly because they exist in food deserts where there aren't any supermarkets for hours around by foot/ public transportation. Basically, poor families that don't own a car are forced to pay more. The .85 cents would have DEFINITELY been high for the time. Also remember, this movie was shot IN LOS ANGELES using a cast and crew FROM LA!!!! Scripts are changed/ re-written all of the time, even during shooting if there is a noticeable error.

It was a sign of the times in California. It was the point of contention between Korean store owners and the minority communities the claimed to serve during the Rodney King riots. They bought up all the "convenient" stores and jacked up the prices. Prices in "the hood" were often higher than suburban neighborhoods.

Michael Douglas has said that this is the movie that he is most proud of. Don't hold too much against that one cop. The filmmaker is making the same point that he makes throughout the film. It is smoggy, broiling hot and everybody is super cranky. The cop is trying to figure out what might be coming down the pike towards him. Is your ex violent, has he hit you in the past, is he armed? If I was a cop I would be asking the same questions, just maybe in a nicer tone.

I think the fact that the judge granted her a PFA even though she hadn't asked for one is what really made him snap: he was no longer to see his child. For what it's worth, and while possibly justified in this case (see his interactions with all of the children he encountered throughout the film), the family law system was pretty skewed toward women back then based entirely on sexual stereotypes. To that end, note your disparate reactions to the Michael Douglas character as a frustrated parent/stressed spouse, and your reaction to the Detective's wife as a stressed spouse - generally also based on sexual stereotypes/expectations.

Unfortunately, it's pretty commonly filed in contentious divorce cases - lawyers often recommend it simply to strengthen their client's hand and prevent communication to try to influence or derail the case. The threshold is quite low, it doesn't need much of any justification, and it is pretty routinely granted. Better safe than sorry. I know many recipients find it unjust and infuriating, and even a slur on their character, but you just have to accept it for what it often is: just a part of the procedure. I know our reactors were upset at the policeman's questioning, but given how often it is given, he probably needs more info to get a better sense of the urgency of the actual threat.

They shouldn't even be compared; the main difference being this is a more "down to earth" film about mental health and the problems of letting some problems linger unattended for too long. While Joker was done from the warning perspective of "don't disregard the problems of not treating mental health", the problem with The Joker is that the character is meant to embrace the darkest parts of having mental issues (like ditching completely the empathy for others). The Joker is a sanbox of the most over the top darkness of the human mind we can think of; hence not exactly the right element to portray the average crisis of mental health.

Bill was not the villain, he was the (anti-)hero; Society, which capriciously deems human beings "not economically viable", was the villain. This misunderstood film was prophetic in that even in the '90s it was revealing the increasingly toxic, self-destructive, and insane nature of the U.S. political-economic system. How the economic overlords of the de-industrializing Western "civilization" would destroy the lives, not just of foreigners in pursuit of its imperialist wars of extraction and domination, but even members of its own nation for its insatiable greed and lust of power. There is an ugly truth that "Falling Down" elucidates that people feel instinctively but cannot accept rationally/consciously because they are neither morally nor psychologically able to face that horror; as Reinhold Niebuhr insightfully points out: "the facts of man's collective life easily robs the average individual of confidence in the human enterprise" -- and so Bill must become the "villain" in order to continue to hide from that truth (like Prendergrast had to). Like the viewers, Bill instinctively feels that something is wrong with society and he starts his "Hero's Journey" but is likewise unprepared for the truth since he's devoted his whole life to the lie of the "American Dream", and so far removed from the undemocratic center of power that has deemed him "economically unviable" (just like the U.S. factory workers whose jobs were taken to Mexico or China to pay slave wages there rather than living wages with benefits here) that his unfocused lashing out against other victims of that same system becomes also a tragedy fated by his own ignorance, by his blind devotion to the illusions spun by the real powers that be. Had Bill got wise and organized... it could have been a different movie, entirely. And as the late George Calin said, "It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it."

Notice D-Fens immediately stopped in his tracks when he saw that, you could tell he instantly related to the guy because he’s been on that side, “don’t forget me” and D-Fens nods, this movie has a lot of layers to it when you think about it.

I've always thought that Prendergast's (Robert Duvall) wife was clearly disturbed and that she may have been responsible for their child's death. The way he described it as being SIDS but strange because she wasn't an infant, she was 2. She went to sleep and never woke up (smothered perhaps by a disturbed jealous mother). I know....dark.

The ex wife is the original villain of the movie. She gets a restraining order making a father unable to see his child because she FELT that MAYBE he MIGHT be abusive in the FUTURE, even though he never once had been, and having a temper once in awhile is normal for the majority of people so is not a good reason. Enough to make any man snap and become a villain. Absolutely disgusting.

Michael said it perfectly: how many times does a rational man have to get beaten down before he becomes irrational? Lots of things he talked about in the movie were so true... @Gravydog316 ...but not everyone IS nice. Some people (& [pseudo] governments) in the real world are very distinctly NOT nice. Some people have mental illness and get out of control and might hurt nice people because they can't help it. And no one can help them in that particular moment without getting seriously hurt or killed. Some people are so "not nice" that they break into old lady's homes in the middle of the night and attack them & their disabled son and try to steal from them and beat them up. But, some weak old ladies know how to use a weapon and protect themselves from such monsters. Bullies need to be put in check, no matter the reason they are bullies. Until there is a Captain American serum for real, weapons and training are the best we can do. Wish it weren't so, but wishing gets you nowhere.
