Many french settlers from Louisiana fled to the Caribbean islands including Puerto Rico after the Purchase in 1803. Many of them were wealthy creoles or pure French who had creole wives and children and also creole slaves who fled with them. Many Puerto Ricans have French last names and ancestors who spoke creole fluently. My great grandpa spoke creole. I dance and listen to Puerto Rican folkloric music "Bomba" which has some lyrics in creole. Check out puertoritmo website. my roots are from LA.

Portions of my family have roots in Natchitoches. My more recent family however is from West Tennessee. I grew up eating gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish and even bread pudding because my mom & grandmother made it. I def thought all African Americans ate it lol. I still consider myself AA but now that I know I have some Creole roots I’m def digging more into it.

@CadjinGisclair You are absolutely right ...Creoles are White, Black and Multi Racial...Because I'm Multi Racial, I sometimes put the emphasis on Mixed Race People of Creole Heritage but of Course that is not the case at all..We can debate as to who were the Original Creoles but in Colonial Louisiana the focus was on the White Creoles..I know of many White Creoles in Louisiana that still speak Louisiana Creole...Thanks for clearing that subject up..
@augustinecomeaux15 жыл бұрын
There are quite a few books on the subject and it's up to the individual to decide whats true and whats not..Not all Black Women in Slavery Were forceably Raped by the masters, Some willingly co habitated with them to have a better life for their off springs.They make it seem like it was a Conspiracy to separate the People of the Black Race but not all Mixed Race People were the result of forced relations ,some were done willingly and We as mixed People are totally aware that We are on Our own

Hilarious! From reading the post below I see that nobody agrees on what is a creole. My grandfather was named Canada LeBlanc and he was born in Louisianna. He used to tell us about his mixed race ancestors. We didn't grow up in Louisianna and we just considered our grandfather a black man. Yes he was very light skinned with silk curly hair.

You are partially correct...Creoles are World Wide and can be from the Caribbean ,off the Coast of Africa etc, etc...Many Creoles have Haitian Ancestry and Many Creoles have settled in Louisiana from other areas..The Word " CREOLE " is not of Louisiana Origins...Creoles have roots in Africa and France as well...Now if You are referring only to the Louisiana Creoles then You are partially correct
@dawnemile49744 жыл бұрын
There is no Haitian ancestry. Haiti is just a country not a race. Do ancestry records have any DNA from the new world? Haitians have African and European ancestry. So many Americans are miseducated about race. A proudly ignorant people.

Your response is very confusing...Nobody ever said Haitians were a separate Race, Just where did you get this mis information from...Are you an Anthropoligist or are you just blowing smoke..I'd like to know where you get this information from !! How did the creoles escape being put into the slave market even if they were mixed,they must have shown some blackness? I realize they were a more cultured people but did the slave traders know this? Ok, hate to bust yalls bubble. Reason why I'm commenting is because you are using the word creole as if there is one true meaning. There really is one true meaning but you are getting the original one true meaning all wrong. There are mixed race Creoles sure, and there are also pure white Creoles. What I am about to say, you can Google it, research it, and see that what I am saying is true. Opelousas has been around for a long long time. It was a trading post since 1695 and was established in 1720 as Poste des Opelousas. You can even look at the Opelousas Militia Muster Roll. If you look, it tells you if the person is Acadian, Creole, or French. Acadian, we now say cajun, are those that arrived in Louisiana around 1760 from Arcadia Nova Scotia. French meant you are a French Colonial that arrived directly from France. Creole meant you were children, grandchildren, descendant from those that came directly from France. That is what Creole meant to us. I am Creole. I have a very small amount of cajun blood in me I am mostly Creole. My family were French Colonials that came directly from France. Famous Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning is in Opelousas. My Ancestry DNA test shows majority French, no negro. None. I don't care if it did, but it doesn't. It was a big deal to know if you was Cajun, Creole, or French. But again, what did Creole mean? Creole meant descendant from France but born in the Louisiana colony. Is that also what it means in Haiti? Are you from Africa, or was you born in Haiti, descendant from Africans? But I digress, I will not get into that. Only what us in Opelousas go by what Creole means. I enlightened a few folks, friends and family that would call themselves Cajun that they are not Cajun but rather Creole since ther descendents were French Colonials and did not come from Nova Scotia. All of them researched and found out I was correct and thanked me for pointing this out. They also said that it must mean that others that call themselves Cajuns must also be mistaken and be Creole French. I would say research this, you may be surprised. Many so-called experts have no idea what they are talking about and others that have no idea about anything believe them. Over a period of generations doing this, has got people believing things that are not true and the only reason they believe it is because they were told it was so, by somebody that simply doesn't know what they are talking about.. Now, I am not saying that what I am saying is the Gospel truth but what I am saying is, that if you research what I am saying, you will see for yourself that I am correct..... I am a Caucasian Creole Frenchman and proud to know what I'm talking about..... If you find out for yourself that I speak the truth, give my comment a "like" please for me taking my time in writing all this, Please... P.S. Here is an example of outright incorrect information that is presented in this video at around 8:00. He said that etouffee is his Creole heritage invention. Google that as well. It came about from a cafe in Breaux Bridge, LA in the 1920's. Wikipedia discusses this as well. New Orleans didn't have Etouffee on the menu's until a few decades ago. Etouffee is clearly a Cajun dish from Acadiana that everybody loves.

@reviloformtamesaws I'm sorry Mr Historian. I'm not impressed.You seem to be twisting the Truth.The meanings vary & the word was used By the Spanish but in no way in it's original context did it refer to the Spanish as being the first Creoles. Mixed Race Creoles have their Roots & Language in Africa long before the Spanish used the term & long before their intro into the New World.If that is so how Do You account for the Millions of Creoles that reside in the islands off the coast of Africa

To it's a race as well. I'm Mascarene creole so we interact with Europeans, Africans and Asians. We consider us none of those even though some of us might look Europeans or Africans. It's a culture that has turned into an ethnicity and slowly into a racial identity much like mutts can become a new breed. I consider creole as a race although a Lousiana creole might be as alien to me as say an African or pure European. We may still understand each other though and have common cultural traits.

Go with French or French Creole. The Cajuns settled west of the Mississippi River in what is known as Acadiana and came from Nova Scotia. If you don't know if they come from Nova Scotia, then you don't know if you are Cajun but you do know you are French.
