I remember years ago, about 2009 or so with Toy Story 3, realizing that LEGO likes to chase properties that have been successful in the past and now have a new chapter (Indiana Jones, Toy Story 3, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and so on). It's like a marketing strategy to suggest some security investing merchandise into that license. But just because it's a reliable brand, doesn't make the new installment as successful as its contemporaries.

Kind of unfortunate how Speed Racer bombed so hard, especially given my nostalgia for it. You always come up with such clever and inspired themes for your videos. Have you thought of doing a video where you look at all the Lego sets/minifigs for the #1 BO hit of each year starting from, say, 1980 (i.e. around the period where blockbusters became a thing)? You could then look at the possibility of those hitherto unrepresented #1 films getting sets, like Three Men and a Baby and Rain Man (pretty much 0%), and Shreck 2 and E.T. (much more likely), as well as Top Gun and Terminator 2 (very unlikely, but not entirely impossible, especially if we also account for the customised/unofficial Lego market). And also look at the past and potential future of those #1 movies that already have sets (i.e. Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, Batman and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King). Obviously, certain #1 movies are already well represented by Lego, and continue to be so (i.e. The Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi/Phantom Menace etc, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone/Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and The Avengers/Black Panther/Endgame).

I remember an Ashens video (I can't remember which one) where he theorises that Lego are trying to make people forget that the Prince of Persia sets happened (I think his reasoning was that there was some sourcebook that mentioned a lot of themes but not Prince of Persia?) Marketing budgets are normally the same as the production budget, as you need to factor in it the theatre cuts as well. So if a film has a production budget of 200 million, it'll need 400 million in the box office to break even. Which is why more and more films are flops as the age of massive theatre revenue is over but they haven't adjusted production and marketing budgets accordingly.

Black Panther lego sets have been a huge flop! Literally 50+ percent off on all sets. Even the Bust went on huge sale pretty fast.

But the movie did well.

The sets look like garbage. Ya know its bad when those are the very few Lego sets left on clearance in stores during holiday season.

I wish Lego would show more love to Western themes. The Lone Ranger sucked, but the tie-in was their only attempt at making a new line of Wild West sets, and it was surprisingly solid. And that really helped with our Lego cowboy fix for the time being, despite being just a one off. I also missed when they brought back those 1960s rail pieces for their mine sets at the time, as they were better than those times they would shoehorn in those new coaster tracks as much as possible.

I've never seen the movie, but I really want the lone ranger sets. I'm not even a huge fan of the wild west but those sets are just way too good.
