I agree with what has been said. I watched an episode of The Bronx Zoo last year. When it comes time are we as owners doing what our heart wants, or what's best for the animal. Really helped me make decision for my Buddy. I had done the best I could to provide him a good home for 20 years. It was now time for him to move on. Love the videos.

Nice work, on both ends of the transaction, small farmers sticking together & helping each other out! You did the right thing for John, even though it was difficult - he obviously wasn't going to last much longer, and there is no sense in making him suffer just to save yourself the heartache of doing what needed to be done. There are those who think letting an animal live to the end of their life is the right thing to do, regardless of their health, but taking responsibility means doing what is truly best for the animal rather than what makes the person feel good about themselves. Sean, thank you for our freedoms!!! Forty years ago I often went to air shows, and the Harrier was my favorite.

JJ gave us lots of piglets. Jennie and I decided to keep 6 of his offspring gilts for breeding purposes so it was time for him to move somewhere that he can continue doing what he does best.

I seldom comment, but have enjoyed your videos for MANY years. Part of being responsible for any animal, is the HUGE responsibility of doing the "right thing" for each animal. A large part of that responsibility is not only knowing what the humane thing to do for them, but ACTING UPON that knowledge and following through with that action in a timely manner. I applaud you and your wife on your courage and your compassion. The courage in speaking your mind in front of a camera and the world...and your compassion in doing the right thing for John. Doing the right thing provides proof of having done the best thing. In nature, John would have likely lived a short life of suffering for survival rather than the long, comfortable life free of threat and fear of the dark. His purpose was served in the form of many blessings for so many. Thank you, Pete, Hillary and the farmers whose lives are devoted to adding their blessing to the lives of others.

It's always a sad day when you see your animals suffer, be it livestock, dog, cat...knowing that it would be selfish if you didn't relieve them of their suffering just because you know you will miss them. That's love. All of your animals have a great life with you. They get talked to and they talk back, like the Ms Patty, very opinionated. Any animal that comes to live on your farm, no matter the length of time, will have the best life. I am sorry that you lost your boar, excited though that we get to continue watching for new little piglets . Thank you for another meaningful video.

I feel for you guys, John was a part of your world for a long time. You made a good, humane decision and showed you are a good steward of your farm. That is why I enjoy your channel so much. I grew up on a similar farm, just a little bigger. My Dad was a school principle and we farmed 160 acres. you two were a lot alike, think and then do. It was a great way to grow up, I miss it. My companion and I recently found your videos. We really enjoy watching them and we watch at least a handful each day. My companion will soon be 88. He spent his summers as a child, on a farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He was a machinist by trade, and manufactured logging equipment, so he really enjoys your videos of the tractors also since he has also drove and fixed many of them. My experience living on a farm is minimal, but I also enjoy seeing your farm and all the wonderful animals. At age 70 now, and not able to walk much after a stroke, I watch from the comfort of our living room, without the mess and smell of actually being there! We also like hearing your philosophy. Thank you for being so interesting and willing to share your experiences with us.

John is at peace and in a better place. You gave him a good life and a quick death. It is a relief when their suffering is over. I had a cat that had renal failure and needed to be pts. If you went anywhere near him he screamed so you heard him in the next state. It was a relief when the vet put him to sleep.

Who did NOT want to do anything Dad tried to get him to do! I just about got ran over by him trying to hold up a board! It was like a mini locomotive on the move! 45 years in the meat business both processing and sales. On the sales side I had a handful of country butcher/slaughter shops that routinely needed to move animals around. Loading and unloading pigs was alway a challenge with and without the proper equipment, stalls, fencing and help. Your effort to load J J brought back lots of fond memories. Thank you.

You gave John a wonderful life. I know it's hard to speak of this subject to thousands of people, but it really sounds like John knew it was "time" and he let you know that. When we had to have our beloved dog down, he let us know it was time by not being able to right his hind feet after each step, by not eating, and lying by the back door crying. Even though the vet said putting him to sleep was the very best thing to do, I still asked to be given a sign that we had done the right thing. My hubby and I took some lunch to the beach and sat on our favourite log. We saw a pod of orcas swim by - something we'd never seen there. For us, that was the sign we'd asked for. I wonder if Sean and Jenny and your new boar were a sign for you. Just a thought. Yours in Gratitude

When I become so old that life is difficult due to pain and natural disease, I would consider it a blessing for someone to end it for me quickly without I being aware of it which was the case for John. This is extremely humane as compare to a natural death which can be a long slow suffering.

That is one nice boar im sure he will be good. John the boar outlived himself and when animals get old usually they are put to down as soon as possible. You extended his life way more than anyone else would have done. Spring is going to be fun with all the new piglets that will come.

When we had pigs, I tried to load a boar about the same way you did, only by myself. He ran over me a couple of times before I got him in. But as another farmer once said if your not having struggles your not farming! Always good memories you guys bring back.

I’m anxious to see the new design for the pig “condo”. Your architectural design will be functional for moving ,cleaning pig pens with minimal shoveling, and piglet nurseries. Pete and Hillary, I am so glad that your pig problems have been solved, at least for now, and into the future. You did the right thing taking care of your old and very hurting boar. As you said, you both took good care of him, and he had a good life, and served you well with all the offspring he produced. He mentioned in an earlier video that the meat would not taste good from a full grown boar like John and that once put down he would be laid to rest in the woods on the farm. Not sure if burried or just laid on the ground to feed the wildlife but no he wont feed the farm.

Yes you did give John a good life! He was what he was too and that was to help you provide for your family through selling meats and eating meats in your home. I think the way you handle discussing these things is great and those that have a problem well they most likely won't watch but the ones here watching all the time well we understand and support your family! I've watched this episode a few times now. I guess what surprises me is how tame John was being a boar. I grew up knowing that my grandmother (Bobu) when she was a baby, was placed on a blanket near a tree where her big sister was in picking apples. A boar on their farm broke loose from it's pen and attacked my Bobu. Her sister immediately set upon this boar and killed it with her bare hands. But not without biting off the top portion of my grandmother's ear first. She use to wear her hair in such a way to cover her ears, but she'd show it to you if you asked her and she'd giggle. Typical farm girl to be sure.

Congrats on the new home to J.J.! We know he's in good hands once again. His gentle demeanor and confirmation speak well for his care at Sean and Jenny's farm. It's always nice when there's a win/win solution for all parties concerned (even for Red/Brownie/J.J.). How old is J.J.? It was good seeing some good daughter/dad time shared. I'm one of the folks who understand your position, and thank you for sharing the news on John. Tough choices need to be made when an animal is suffering, especially when it's one who's been with you for so many years. He must've been 600+ lbs. in his day. He was a big boy.

As always good to see people helping people. Farming is never easy you get attached to your animals and when it is time for them to go it affects you. As you said Pete if you have livestock you also have dead stock. Thanks for taking us along! Have a great day!
