I remember the statues of saints buried head first to sell houses or the knots in the napkins to find things and I never realised the Nonna's meant to actually threaten saints with that!!!

50:14 there's a lot of Catholics who go to mass on Sunday but have practices (religious or not) that wouldn't be considered Catholic the rest of the week. 😬

49:05 im not a creator/don't share my craft at all but holly hell, i relate to that but in irl; i'm slavic folk practicioner and im my area ppl associate my work with christianity (big love for mother Mary) and them when i explain my believes in detail ppl are like "oh, so you're just appropriating christian stuff" no! old time slavs associated Mother Mary with Mokosh, Mother Earth; it's so infuriating when you've to explain it time and time again, smth for being eclectic or not really "fitting in" any of the labels (pagan/christian) awesone video, love your work, that lipstic is fire!

An analogy that lit up my brain: Folk magic is like metaphysical open source code. The active community of people contributing to the documentation and/or codebase is a bit of a mess because people are messy, and it will always be active practice on all sides to balance tradition/stability and adaptive innovation. Also all code has bugs, so finding and fixing those bugs is a continuous process of maintaining and expanding on any codebase. Every community is a group project with shared responsibility that requires lotssss of respect, patience, and humility, so I guess this analogy can apply to so many other diverse communities, and the easiest examples for me to relate to is open source codebases like Drupal, and thinking of software as a kind of magic brings me joy 😅

I love watching your brain work as you answer some of these deep questions with perfectly valid "I don't know." It's okay not to know! And just an fyi...that yellow leaf in the pothos behind you is calling to me! 😛

Slavic witch here - we have a very similar situation with dual faith! it's a real thing, there are russian witches that consider themselves slavic christian witches.

I have to say that this was one of the most unbelievably beautiful, chill, GENUINE, comforting videos I’ve come across in a long time. I am finishing it up after listening in sections while on lunch break, driving home from work, getting ready and cozy for bed 💛 you are so lovely to listen to, thank you for the mindful and magical content that you create 💛

29:33 -- the hand toss in the air had me lowkey cackling because like!! yeah!! what do you want me to say, man? you think that's the weirdest thing that exists in the witchcraft spheres, bud? i agree that my main response is either complete neutrality or "cool! good for them, that fits their vibe"

Your content has been so inspiring to me and it's motivated me so much in my own practice. I even started venerating my ancestors and learning their native language! Unfortunately for me those ancestors are Polish so now I want to eat my own hand learning it, but it's the effort that counts right!

Need to mention that Saint Anthony's Tongue is a fantastic podcast as a resource for all my fellow audio-learners out there. W. is so knowledgeable and also kind in spirit.

Thank you so much for your realness in this video 🙌✨ it helps to feel less bad about things like not perfectly keeping record, being organized like a scholarly wizard 😂 I too just take quick notes and love just lighting candles for everything personally haha my imposter syndrome hits everywhere, including my practice (been actively a witch for 13+ years) but it still never feels like I'm "doing enough" you helped me laugh at a lot of things and remember we are what we are, regardless of how we feel that day or whatever else we have to deal with. 🧙 Blessings my dude 🖤

TIL that saint punishing is a thing. I think the ex-Christian in me is flabbergasted. Personally, I would not be comfortable ‘punishing' anybody besides my unruly gremlin students (I work at a kindy) and the usually just means standing in a corner and not being allowed to play. I think its because I associate saints as good spirits, so punishing them feels kind of horrible. That said, something similar happened in North China where if the local rain god doesn’t give the people rain after some days, the people take the statue out of the temple and let it bake in the hot sun so that the god can get a taste of the suffering of the people, and therefore be motivated to bring rain soon. Seems that coercing spirits and entities is kind of universal across cultures. edit: forgot to say thank you for the video and the insights you share :)

I think when it comes to practices like folk catholicism in the context of dual faiths people are quick to judge because they see catholicism as separate by God. Because catholicism is a faith driven by a One God narrative it gets dicey when other faiths are also incorporated.

Would it be fair to describe folk Catholicism as similar to an eclectic pagan who works with spirits/deities from different traditions and incorporates them into their own practice?

I grew up in a fundamentalist community and there’s a definite possibility that when people leave that community they take those judgemental and black and white ways of thinking into other spiritual communities. I don’t like it but it seems to happen a lot.

As an italian, hearing a non-italian practicing italian folk magic and speak italian is... strange. Not a bad thing, I just never expected it. Neat.

They are an Italian-american and have been pretty explicit about that on this channel. Descendants of Italian migrants have every right to reconnect to parts of our heritage.
