An example from my folk practice that's ugly is I spent a couple hours picking up trash around my neighborhood great for the land and community. Even picking up a few pieces whenever you see them can count you don't need to do it for hours I just had the time and energy. When friends come over I also give them tea and choose what mug to give them. Anything can really become your practice. Like they said just experiment and find what works for you.

My grandma is a pediatrician and served people around her her whole life. When she retired she discovered her herbal medicine talent. She's almost 90 and is still helping her community to this day, people coming to her, seeking help and advise. I always saw her as a bit of a witch, she has a proper apothecary at home, herbs drying everywhere and when she makes her ointments and cream..I mean proper witch 😎 and now I see that she actually might be without even knowing it! I'm actively trying to absorb her wisdom and I see her being happy that she has someone to pass it on 😌 Love you granny!

I want to share something because I don't have anyone in person to share with. I recently was able to buy a house (I am so thankful and blessed that I could). This is such a witchy home and I love it! First of all there are native flowers and plants all over the proprty. The previou owner got some special certification for it. So many native birds and bugs love this space. Also, this house had no bad energy when I moved into it and this place is 100 years old how did it not acquire things over the years? I did a clearing/ceaning and everything but it didn't really feel necessary. I due to a few things I suspect the previous owner was a bit witchy and they left this place good to go. There was also a few random nicknack type things I thought of as protective spritis/guardians so decided to leave them be. I feed the birds and am expanding the vegetable garden. I am just so thankful and happy. When my partner and I saw this place we knew it was the one. It was calling to us.

This was so good for me to watch. I have a disability that gives me chronic pain and fatigue, so strict timings of "this spell must be done on this day at this time under this moon" doesn't work for me all the time. Like, sometimes I have the intention of doing cleansings at the new moon or whatever it might be, but then I'm ill and I can't. I know that's okay really, but it does get into your head and it was nice to hear you guys talk about it.

Same here! It can really feel like we're not "real" when we don't practice a certain way even when we know it's not true. And with a disability (I also have one) this is even more true because of how often I've had to adapt things to work for me.

I used to give myself shit about this until I read in the book Abramelin the Mage that not to worry about planetary times and that the best times to work with a planet is whenever it’s above the horizon. I’ve noticed better results with this especially if you can get it to be on the planetary day. There are many apps like SkyView Lite that you can just point to the sky and see where the planet is currently. I’m tapering off a narcotic medication (and will be for the next year or so more) I was put on in rehab (of all places) 5 years ago and frequently have times where I feel too sick to do anything so I feel your pain.

This video really spoke to me; thank you. I realized that so much of what I do could already be considered folk magic lol. You saying "it's not aesthetic" made me go like "uh my most common spell is literally clumps of cinnamon floating in coffee in a red plastic cup." Watching this made me want to get back into the swing of witchcraft, since I _already_ work on a "as needed" basis and have struggled to keep up any sort of routine or aesthetic or stuff like that.

I love crafty magic too, working with my hands in the craft helps me connect with source! I practice a little bit of everything but nothing gets me in mood like a good old hoodoo crafty magic . Working with the elements helps me connect with the gods and goddess. I believe folk magic is made to be simple and using what you have. Since I started working with my ancestors ( island girl Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹, we practiced voodoo, Obeah, NATURE IS EVERYTHING TO US), my magic hits every time!

Thank you so much for this video. 2 years ago I saw a psychic at my local metaphysical store and she told me that the gods were having some sort of intergalactic war...? And also that my deities were upset with me for not being consistent with offerings. She also had said some really bad stuff about some past trauma of mine that was just disgusting. I didn't really ever ask for super major things from my deities I don't think, just help with cleansing and small bits of luck, and I would give everyone their associated offerings whenever I had them on hand, but often just lit candles for them or offered my own energy. I baked for them once as well. It felt right to me but she made me doubt my practice and I stopped working with them for a long time. It actually disconnected me so much from my practice that I stopped really actively practicing. Last year I learned she was going through a divorce and was mentally projecting on her clients. Ick. Anyway, I recently have started working with my deities again and it's made me really happy. I'm really grateful to be reminded that your practice is yours and what feels right to you is right, and if you don't know, find out!

About just doing it and the privileges necessary for a complex/consistent practice: I'm chronically ill and I've been super busy these past months to the point of neglecting my craft. But I have a community based art project to finish and since I'm working with Brighid, I just light a candle, some incense and I get to work. As simple as that. I don't feel particularly witchy atm, but it's arts and it's for my community, so it totally feels connected to my practice even tho I'm too exhausted for a cute, well thought out ritual. I just do it and I'll do more complex work when the energy is back up and I have more time.

@TalesOfBalkanMagic Жыл бұрын
I love you both, but this conversation is just so over the place if you consider terminology. I know, I know that with "folk magic" you're probably referring to some contemporary witchcraft idea, but it's an actual term in religious studies and if you know it - it is so weird. Long story short, folk religion is generally opposed to the institutionalised religion, thus at some point it became equated with folk magic. It is very, very often used in a derogatory manner. And while scholars do call people "folk practitioners", I've never met a folk practitioner that refers to them as such. It is good to know that this self labelling is a new. You don't want to scare away a traditional folk practitioner by calling them one (speaking from experience here). Now, the term "folk" indeed refers to people, but the practices that are coined "folk practices" and especially those that are considered "folk magic" are not exclusively for the benefit of the community. Unless if you consider getting rid of your lover's spouse forever, terminating an unwanted pregnancy in someone else without their knowing or stealing the fertility of your neighbours' fields a good thing for the community. Because lots of the folk magic is that. Another interesting thing to note is that what you're referring to folk magic, in relation to the Christian saints, is better described as folk Christianity. Of course all this is mostly scholarly stuff, and even scholars would have differing opinions on the details, but I think it is good to know these things. Especially if you consider that words are sometimes believed to be the strongest magical tool. And in my opinion a strong folk practice is best founded on one major thing - knowing who you are. This doesn't necessarily mean knowing who you are genetically. It is a good starting point, of course, but you should always remember that culture is not transferred genetically. If you come to my country, if you respect my land and family, if you follow the rules of my community - you are one of us. This is the rule most people followed throughout history. So... Find yourself and you'll find your practice. Good luck!
@dhiibvulk9036 Жыл бұрын
This opened my eyes so much. I always felt isolated from other practioners due to how grounded by practice felt and now it just. Makes sense. I want to use magic to heal people, to protect my community, to make sure my neighbor gets a job, so that my friend's new apartment is safe, all of these things, just. A more mundane and grounded practice. And I think that folk magic might be just what I need. Woo! Slightly sad that I don't think there are many resources on folk practices from my heritage (I'm part lebanese lol, maronite if anyone's familiar) but will keep looking and just hope my ancestors aren't mad at me

haven’t finished the video yet so maybe you guys talk about it but i’ve been interested in folk magic for a year and a half now, and been doing ancestor work and all that! but a problem i’ve ran into after digging into my ancestry- my family lineage truly has a little bit of everything in europe/eastern europe: british, german, dutch, scottish, etc. digging into folk practice there feels foreign to me, very removed. my family truly is American, we’ve been here awhile, we don’t hold a lot of traditions from places we immigrated, and we kept moving after that! so it’s not even like i can dig into regional practice bc the PNW doesn’t seem to have one open to me. when i ask my great grandma questions about “weird traditions” or “superstitions” i got told we don’t really have any! .-. i was curious if anybody felt similar- like they’re so drawn and called to folk practice and would love to dig into more specifics than the general folk practice stuff but don’t really know where to root that practice because it doesn’t feel like there’s any one culture that feels “yours” enough besides, you know, colonial America lol. which is most times appropriative and problematic. otherwise very scarcely documented or closed (southern craft, ozarks, etc.)
@Mylittlestcorner Жыл бұрын
I feel the same!! Except my family never even kept track of where our older roots lied. I think maybe a good compromise is to learn everything you can from folk practices you know your family once lived around, then gently see which parts call to you (or your ancestors). Witch craft is unique to each individual and so long as you're educated and respectful, mixing certain things isn't wrong 🙂

Coming from someone who practices some British Traditional Witchcraft and draws form Appalachian conjure (because heritage), I sometimes wonder if people have a tendency to map British TradCraft on other traditions just because they seem to have a "witchy" flavor (especially if it's been appropriated). For some people like Appalachian practitioners, it's common to draw from Hoodoo and British/Celtic TradCraft because of the mixed ancestry of the area and proximity of the practices (I'm primarily of Celtic and Germanic heritage via Britain, but many Appalachians are African-American or Native American or have that ancestry). But in a lot of other cases like Italian folk magic for example, even comparison doesn't quite work (for example, from what I understand the Devil isn't a big part of Italian folk magic, but in British folk magic he's almost omnipresent in nature and also huge in Appalachian folk practices). Maybe where some of the misconceptions come from but that's mostly speculation on my part. Also I 100% agree with what you said in the video. The part about folk practices being concerned in the everyday is a big reason why you can be pretty much any religion (including none) and a folk practitioner.

I’m looking to add these into my practice but I’m struggling to find information/books on them. I’m not wanting to do conjure or American based folk magic. I’m looking for mostly catholic/Christian/Jewish folk magic but not Italian because that’s not part of my ancestry. I hope this makes sense. I’m really struggling with it. I feel the "exhausted after working" bit. -_- I started working in a hospital and had like... 25,000 steps by the end of the day yesterday. Finding time to work my spiritual practices in is a pain sometimes.

Y’all look absolutely stunning. I find this information very interesting. Me personally am on the line of Norse paganism and Wicca. I just wanted to learn about another type of magic. Also, fucking *love* the skull in the background, may I ask which it is? Love this video, thank you for spreading this information very helpful and awesome

A lot of folk magic is using spiritual gift, or a series of mundane things, or a simple practice to survive and thrive. The ancestors already know you. You just need to honor that and if you want to you can know them.

Frankie when you say Rue, do you mean ruta graveolens? Maybe you now have it in your garden or in a pot outside, but you can grow it in the US. I have it growing in zone 6 CT and it does well, it is perennial.

Love this! Although, I have been having trouble connecting with ancestors... I'm not sure who they are. I have no idea where I come from and none of my relatives really do either. I have wanted so badly to connect but not sure how to do so if I don't know who I'm trying to connect with
