As a Brit, watching the Wallace and Gromit shorts is almost a rite of passage and they're especially popular at Christmas when they're shown on TV. It is astounding how much effort goes into stop motion animation, so hearing a new special was coming this Christmas with the return of one of the best characters in TV history was the best news ever. I cannot wait to see what they do with Feathers McGraw this time

This brought such a grin to my face. Wallace & Gromit goes beyond a tv/film franchise; it is a part of the national soul, just as much as Test Match Special, a cup of tea or a red telephone box. If you ever meet someone who says they don't like Wallace & Gromit, they can be regarded as being as trustworthy as Feathers McGraw.

The passion behind Wallace and Gromit is clear in every scene. It's absolutely iconic, the comedic writing is a monument in British media. The spare track scene is to this day one of the most technically impressive pieces of stop motion animation. They even put their foot down to Dreamworks in regards to americanisation demands showing that their art is only worth making if they can make it as they see it not as the suits want to sell it.

I didn't get into Wallace and Gromit until this year. What I loved about A Grand Day Out/The Wrong Trousers and The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit from what I saw was that it's a simple but beloved and handcrafted put with care kind of films. The storylines from each of those films are expendable, meaning it brought a different form of cinema even though Aardman started stop motion in the 1970s. But what makes them interesting is how each storyline works on its own of getting to the point rather letting the story unfold in the beginning of each film. Overall, they still make an impact with cinema until this day with now a new movie coming out!

Feathers McGraw was apparently inspired by Mrs. Danvers from Hitchcock's 'Rebecca', which definitely shows, with the dead eyes and ghostly gliding across the room. Personally, he also reminds me a lot of Raymond Burr in Rear Window. What's really scary about the penguin is how much he DOESN'T look like he's enjoying himself while being evil. The other villains seem to relish it or appear pleased with themselves, Feathers is so cold and business-like. Why go to these lengths if you're not even getting any thrill from it? He's horrible.

The craft and the loving attention to detail displayed in the W&G films makes them so endearing. They are one of a few reasons why I got into animation, although I never seemed to have enough patience for stop motion. I was watching Wallace and Gromit for the first time in over a decade and it hit me how genius the penguin episode was. Such an asshole but so well written.

Just rewatched all these and was happy to see youve made this. Great stuff I think youve nailed what makes Wallace and Gromit’s tone work so well. It has a childlike whimsy and imagination, you can tell the creators havent lost that spark with age but you can also tell theyre well read and have interests in classic literature and films so they mixed that in with surprisingly mundane moments to create a unique tone Like that examples you cited, where the Gromit uses the powerlines in a bit of cartoon logic but Preston just takes a strategy from a typical crime film of just parking somewhere dark. Those two contrasts are really funny, mixing cleverness in a normal way with cleverness in cartoon way. Theres so many of these, like the penguin needing to take measurements for his plans but using the tape measure as a grappling hook And thats ofc. the other brilliant detail. Wallace and Gromit dont live in a wacky cartoon land, they live in dull and boring England that Wallace tries to make more exciting with his inventions, but this dull and boring England still has Penguins who can rent rooms and robotic dogs. Even the animals being clearly sentient and sapient but never talking is somewat of a gag. Like if thry talked thatd be TOO ridiculous A subtle example of this inventive action is in Were Rabbit where Gromit uses the coin operated airplane in the climax. The idea is fantastical on its head, but the animators dont cheat and make it a fully working plane in order to gain altitude Gromit still leads to use some sort of ramp or other force to catapult himself upwards. Thats a very clever of keeping things ridiculous but then adding stakes thru mundanity

Y'know, Preston and Feathers McGraw seem to get the most recognition. Nobody mentions Piella, Victor, and Philip as much anymore.
@maydaymemer466013 күн бұрын
Piella was a great villain, i think because that came out after every other one she got lost in the shuffle. The first three shorts plus Were Rabbit had a ton of cultural impact because they came out at a golden age for Aardman and Matter of Loaf and Death came out after they broke off the Dreamworks contract after Flushed Away underperformed. So i think people just havent seen it or dont have as strong a response if they have seen it With Were Rabbit I can offer the reason I didnt think they engaged me and I think it’s just because I do think theyre fun villains I also think that everything else in Were Rabbit is just so good they dont have a chance to dominate the screen. Were Rabbit has a lot of side characters who are just as fun as those two. I also think because Phillip is so similar to Preston - essentially an evil Gromit - he gets forgotten about
@evancredeur749813 күн бұрын
Except Preston is a mute robot. Philip is a normal dog who barks growls, and even laughs. Well...he was a normal dog until the climax, where he became a tad anthropomorphic during the plane chase.
@maydaymemer466012 күн бұрын
Technically neither Preston nor Gromit are mute, Preston roars in the climax of A Close Shave and in Wrong Trousers and Grand Day out Gromit yelps and growls at certain points
@evancredeur749812 күн бұрын
Yeah, in the first three films he yelped a few times. But I never heard him growl. You must be thinking of Preston. Anyway, in A Matter Of Loaf And Death, and The Curse Of The Were-rabbit, Gromit makes no sound at all. And yes, I admit Preston made some pretty intimidating sounds at the climax. The thing is, unlike both of them, Philip was noisy throughout the Were-rabbit movie. I still can't get it out of my head, the way he grunted after Gromit gave him the slip, or that sound he made after finding the coin. The way he screamed after falling from the plane was pretty funny, too.
@evancredeur749812 күн бұрын
Also, mute doesn't have to mean they don't make any sound. Mute just means they don't talk.

Wallace and Gromit represent two types of Factorio players. Wallace feels that anything worth doing is worth automating, but will happily blunder in front of his own trains. Or run himself over with a remote-piloted tank. Gromit just makes things work, fixes the problems (and spaghetti) Wallace creates, and hand-crafts things as needed. Wallace is the one pushing things forward, but he'd be lost without Gromit. I'm more of a Wallace, myself. I'll fix that spaghetti someday. Or I'll just funnel more belts of resources into it and wait until the next disaster happens while I'm busy fiddling with something else.

After a bit, he sees the penguin come into the garden from the street outside, go into the house, and then the music turns off. Essentially, the penguin isn't even *in the house* while the music is blasting.
