Hey JustAnotherFlutist ! Just out of a curious note, at the amazon.es , the 1-5 ( around 60€ ) volumes are pricier than the ones at 1-6 ( around 24€ )
@abbywalker80418 жыл бұрын
It's because the Books 1-5 Edition is the old edition and is out of print, I'm pretty sure! Just get the Books 1-6 Edition and save some $! I don't think any of the exercises in the new edition are different than any of the ones in the old edition.
@JustAnotherFlutist8 жыл бұрын
+Manuel João Likely it's because they are starting not to print the older edition, and therefore it's becoming rare!

When I took up the flute, more than 30 year ago, Trevor Wye's books were my early guides. I've taken several breaks from flute playing over the years and when I return, they continue to be my guides. My favorite quote from his earliest books is, "Possession of this book will not make you a great flutist." I have quoted him countless times and have applied this wisdom to any worthy endeavor.

My last flute teacher, she was a piccolo specialist( she plays third flute/piccolo with Miami Symphony) and she recommended the Trevor Wye Piccolo practice book ( I love it!). She was also big on Taffanel and Gaubert along with the Andersen etudes. The teacher that I studied with during the first part of my undergrad ( she plays second flute with Miami Symphony) was big on the Marcel Moyse small melodies and the Melodious and Progressive books. Another teacher that I took a lesson with ( She's the principal flutist of Palm Beach Opera and Miami City Ballet) recommended to me the Maquarre seven daily exercises( I got the book about a month ago and I love it).😃❤

As soon as you started reading the part about catching the train, I realized that I already have parts of his book. My flute teacher had copied it for me years ago when I was struggling with my tone quality. I used to hate these exercices, but I have recently started to use them for my practice sessions again. Even as an advanced flutist, you can still benefit from these exercices.

Wow - I never knew about these books until recently. I’m embarrassed to say my age, but let’s say I started playing over a half CENTURY ago. Picking up the flute after a long, long absence just to play here and there at church I might not need to drill and go back and learn, but nope, I’d like to play at my capacity, even in my dotage. Hail Mr. Wye. And thank you so much for this video explaining how to use them.

Yet another example of "it's a small world". Over the past 2 weeks I have been taking classes from Jonathon Landell and one of the other students was Julian Rose. For being in the biz for 5-ish years, he had some phenomenal knowledge of flutes and their makers and Julian & Jonathon were chatting way over my head about a vast who's-who in the flute world. I was asking Julian for some advice on getting lessons given my bat-guano-crazy work schedule and he pointed you out as an internet source. I found you and your endorsement of the Trevor Wye book that Amazon Prime put in my hands by the time I returned home. Your relationship with FCNY prompted me to check them out and I decided to search out Julian (I didn't remember his last name at that point) and read his amazing bio. I'm lovin' your stuff. Keep it up! Peace!

Joanna, for your complexion, start taking Colloidial Silver, Silver Wings 15 PMM. (I use "7 Lights" google) Always buy in glass bottle, not plastic. Use spray pump. 1. Wash face with Colloidial Soap. (Amazon) 2. Then "Bragg" Apple Cider Vinegar. Pat vinegar on face to dry. Also with juice (10 oz's) in the morn, drink a shot glass full before rating. 3. Spray your face with Colloidial Silver. (Carry 4 oz in your purse.) Now, lay off the sweets, stop taking medz (Stay a way from doctors) and lay off the foundation until the skin breaths back to normal complexion. Keep this up and the miraculous will appear (Have i got a story to tell you.) What does your diet consist of??? I'll keep in touch. Jo

Hi Joanna,I love your videos .I too use the Trevor Wye books.An orchestral flute player pal recommended them to me.But as a photographer,I suggest you try an old Hollywood style of lighting for your videos.Use one light directly in front of your face but angled down so that your nose shadow falls roughly half way between your nose and your upper lip.You'll look even more beautiful this way and won't be blinded by lights from the side.(You 'd normally only set up lights to the side if you were doing a flat copy like a painting for example).The second light is redundant unless you want to soften the shadows or use it to illuminate your hair from behind you.

What's the difference between a flutist and a flautist? About $100 an hour (old band joke) I have heard people say "It's flutist. I play a flute, not a flaut." :) FYI for the wondering: The Practice books 1-6 are selling on Amazon right now for $32.95, the Piccolo book is $34.12 with free shipping. There are some independent sellers who have lower prices, but high shipping. I'm putting them on my wish list for when I have the $$ to order.

So a week ago I was ordering some sheet music at an online shop. I had my "financial situation" in my head so I knew I could spend 30 more chf (swiss currency, $1 is about 0.95 chf). So I remembered that you said you like the trevowlr wye books, I looked for it and I guessed I found it. It didn't have a picture of it online so I wasn't sure if I reaoly ordered the right book, but it was more expensive than the single books alone. So I guessed it had to be it. Then on wednesday I got an email from the store, they said that they don't have the sheet music I need right now, but the practice book is on the way. The book arrived yesterday and I was so happy having it. I only did the harmonics exercise because I didn't have much time. I'm so excited to practice, I have much time now since it's spring break💪

Yep, so I went to Wye's website and learned more about his colored-LED lights acrylic flute and the rare triple-flageolet. More procrastination, can't really call it productive. In a battle between my intention and my attention, no contest. I feel like a puppy distracted by a butterfly . . . Oh, look! A yellow thing! in the air! . . . I have kitten-video-brain. My `holy grails' are reflective of my musical interests: Grey Larson's Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle which is a honkin' $50, 500-page, 3-pound book that goes into great detail about ornamentation and articulation in this style of music. Mel Bay's Complete Book of Irish Music by Mizzy McCaskill builds a bridge into the world of Irish flute music for the Boehm flutist. Imagine my double-surprise when I attended my first Irish-flute workshop, and I was the only one there without a wooden flute. And then the instructor said, "Okay, I'll play this tune through a couple of times, and then you just follow along with me." [=o And when my flute flipped a spring, and he told me that there was probably no-one within 50 miles who could do a repair on "the machine", I knew I had truly come through the looking glass.

Joanna, I think your lights will work out. I would suggest that you do a custom white balance on your camera if you have not already. It still looks a bit off in the color department. If you have not done it, it involves taking a shot of a white piece of paper, and then telling the camera to use that as a reference for true white under that light set up! That also effects all the other colors to make them come out right. I love your videos!

I play clarinet and I feel like we have several different ones. A lot of clarinetists know the Baermann third division scale book, but the Baermann 1st/2nd divisions actually make up a really nice little method book with cool little excercises that sound great. Even the very early beginner excercises are very nice sounding, although I don't think that most of them are appropriate for "true beginners". Klosé is another good all-around method book, although I do feel like Baermann divisions 1 and 2 are kind of like "hidden jewels" in clarinet pedagogy which I really like. For tough technique excercises I feel like Kroepsch is pretty challenging. For a good all-around technique, intonation, articulation, etc. bible I really suggest the three-volume Clarinet Fundamentals book series by Reiner Wehle (who is Sabine Meyers' husband). These books are awesome for all around musical development on the clarinet.

I realise I came late to the game here, but does the 1-6 book cover where to place your fingers on the instrument for all the keys and really basic stuff first. Its been a very long time since I played an instrument in general and I'm going to be working on relearning sheet music along the way. I just want to know if it starts with EXTREMELY basic stuff first that a kid could pick up as I have to relearn from the bottom up. I just want a very strong foundation from start to finish. I played the flute for close to 2 years back in high school which was in the late 90's so I'm comfortable relearning and re-playing this instrument. I know everyone learns differently so everything I said is very subjective. Sorry for the text wall.

I think Wye made the Moyse ideas a little more palatable here and there. It would be fantastic if you could make a video on Moyse

JustAnotherFlutist he has a website, simply flute.co.uk where he has excerpts you can download for free. But his book is seriously technical, and makes my inner geek very happy!!!!

Hi I love your videos. Just ordered this. Can I say one thing about your mention of flutist or flautist? Flautist is pronounced floor-tist , hence the “what do you do with floors”. Makes more sense that way right? It’s a shame people are increasingly using flutist, but each to their own. It’s how you enjoy the flute that matters. 😀👍

Jo, I've been wondering, do silencers/mutes exist for the flute? Would be nice to practice using a transportable gadget rather than soundproofing your room...

What exactly is it that you do with floors? 😂

I am a bit confused. Does TW recommend working in different books at the same time, or working through Book 1, 2, 3, etc. sequentially? He seems to say both in different places. Do you have suggestions for implementing the program? Also, he says that mere possession of this book will not result in improvements, reinforcing your point that he seems to be talking directly to the reader (or possessor) of the book.

You have kind of figure out what you need to work on the most first. Most people tend to need to develop their tone a bit more before diving too deep into technique because there's a slight chance that you may get used to using an underdeveloped tone while playing technically challenging exercises/excerpts/pieces. Once your tone is well on its way, that's when people tend to jump into the technical exercises. And then you kinda go back and forth like that. It always helps to have a teacher point out your blind spots though, but if you don't have a teacher, recording yourself playing will teach you a lot of things about yourself!

I was hesitating on what to buy to complement Taffanel & Gaubert Complete book (impossible to find here in France, except famous chapter 4 "Exercices journaliers") and the "Omnibus" was on my list. Have you ever used Moyse's books? Would they be worth it? Was contemplating buying "De la Sonorité" since my pdf version is shi**y and maybe his scales books since I've read that some people (Galway & others) are praising them. Is there any explanations on how to whistle tone and other extended techniques? I would really be eager having a very ample 3rd octave dynamics and my piano/pianissimo are clearly too fluffy/airy when it comes to E6, Fsharp6 or Gsharp6.

I have a question which I’m sorry if you already covered! Do you just go through these books in order or should you do a little of each books?
