Walnut Cabinet // How To Make A Textured Cabinet

As I considered the emotional effects of long-term social distancing, I thought about all the ways in which physical touch has been removed from our lives. That big bear hug your one friend always gives you; the casual high five after a dumb joke; the secret hand shake your kid made with their best friend. They’re all missing. This cabinet is a small reflection of the way those interactions emanate through our lives, and thus it's been titled “The Importance of Physical Touch in an Age of Digital Relationships”, or simply “Touch”. I hope you enjoy this video :)

Just found your channel in the last few weeks and I've been trying to "catch up". I have to say, when I saw the reciprocating saw come out I was reminded of the words of the late great John Wayne..."a man's got to do, what a man's got to do." Excellent work lil' brother!

I know in another video I asked you about making furniture for a living. Well now I know it's not so much about the machines or tools you have. Its refreshing to see such a beautiful, high quality piece come out of a garage workshop. That means there is hope for me yet.The door and back panel detail is amazing. I hope you don't mind, but I'm gonna steal that?

A sawsall? You freekin rock man! I love the cabinet and seeing how you lovingly created it, and hey, the Covid pandemic will affect all of mankind in so many ways for years to come. So thanks for doing your small part in reminding us of who and what we are. In this world of artificial/social media overload and turmoil, somthing as simple as a sculpted piece wood can bring one right back down to earth. Thanks for this. P.S. I may be stealing some of your technique in the future but I don't think I have the where with all to use a sawsall to bookmatch a panel!

Hey, just discovered your work/channel, Erik! Great you share your projects and it is really nice you take your time in these youtube videos, in my opinion you strike a great balance in the filming and editing...for a craft that is in practice seems very lengthy, but it doesn't feel longwinded nor hurried, you draw out your process cleverly, and with a variety shots it keeps an enjoyable viewing experience. Trying to learn some details here. Would you be kind enough to share what was the motivation for the hand sanding when you obviously have a RO close at hand? Also, why use an RO rather than a foam sanding block on the curves?
@ENCurtis
@ENCurtis Жыл бұрын
I used the RO to clean up much of it but sometimes it just needs a little extra love with the hand sanding. Allows me to be very specific with the placement and speed of my lines.

Not going to lie, you made the wood-carving look easy. I guess your choice to use the sawzall was because you were going to carve it anyway? Why not do a long rip-cut with a (relatively cheap) hand saw?
@ENCurtis

You absolutely could! I just didn't have one on hand and chose to go with the sawzall instead. Frankly I was just missing my bandsaw haha

I'm disappointed that the back of the door is not the inverted reflection of the beautiful front. It kills the surprise. The backing on the inside should also have been an inversion IMO. It looks funny with those strips covering up the sides. Yes , I'm Johnny come lately, but it's only now that I've found your channel. Surprise me!
