To everyone getting pissed when people say Social Media is one of the big reasons BTS is so succesful nowadays: You might disagree and say things like it's their music, message, performance, personality that made them so big, YES that's true BUT how do we get to experience all of this? Through social media. So it's not about the fact THAT they are using social media but more about HOW they use it. BANGTAN Bombs are a major key. We got to experience them as human beings with all their fears, laughters, struggles, funny moments, emotional moment, weird moments and everything else BECAUSE of shows like Bangtan Bomb (KZbin), or various variety shows (but then again other K-Pop idols go to those too) and their own shows like RUN BTS (VLIVE). We got to know their personalities through the pictures and Tweets they release through Twitter, what songs they listen to, how they dress, what they eat or where they currently are through SNS and especially Twitter! Also their livestreams are such an important factor. You don't feel like you're watching a celeb talking to you, you feel like you're watching a normal human being rambling about their everyday life. Every celeb uses social media, but no one uses it the way WE use it, normal ordinary people, except for BTS. They post RANDOM stuff, no other celeb posts random stuff, they only post when there's something noteworthy to post but BTS treats SNS the way we do it. And the fact that they do it like us decreases the emotional distance we feel between us ARMY and them as BTS, as celebs. We know them like they're our close friends, and they don't TRY acting like they are close to us, but they GENIUNELY behave like that and have no fear of showing that. It's like their just acting like a normal person that just happens to sing and perform for a living which happens to be caught on tape. They are so real in what they're doing and WITHOUT social media, they wouldn't be able to accomplish that. SO YES; social media IS the key to their success, combined with their sincerity and unfiltered honesty. They deliver the feeling of friendship and family between celebrities and fans like no other before, that's why they are so successful and loved all around the world.

I whole heartedly agree. Without social media their message and passion would not be spread globally. They would have stayed in a fishbowl in Korea and their music would have been swept under by the Big3 and their homeland power. I was first introduced to BTS by Vines of their rookie variety shows and I decided to watch them. I knew of Kpop and seen a couple of BTS's music videos before but it wasnt until then I decided to look into their personalities and dreams... I could make the connect between who they are and the music they produced and fell in love. So social media to me revealed who they are and is the reason ARMY can connect globally and fulfill their goals.

Feli I agreed with everything you said, and do agree that social media is undeniably a huge factor in how BTS got so huge. B/c without it, how would they even have become known this much all over the world? Like someone else commented, without social media, they probably would've stayed in a fishbowl in Korea (or at most, maybe just within Asia). For example, sure as heck, the American music industry would NEVER have promoted a K-pop group here (put them on the radio, etc). I also agree that HOW they use social media... showing their everyday lives, their true personalities, Bangtan Bombs, Run BTS, and all the other fun and kinda "intimate" stuff they have on social media (that most musical artists don't do as much)... was another big key to their success b/c, like you said, it decreased the distance between us ARMY and them, and made us feel closer to them (and also made us fall in love with them as individual *people* ... and not just idols from afar, whom we don't really know their real personalities super well) So I understand when you wrote, "SO YES; social media IS the key to their success, combined with their sincerity and unfiltered honesty. They deliver the feeling of friendship and family between celebrities and fans like no other before, that's why they are so succefull and loved all around the world." However, your emphasis in your post seemed to be that social media - and especially the close bond we ARMY feel for them based on their sincerity and honesty in all their "personal" social media postings/videos - as the main reason why they got so huge. You barely mentioned their phenomenal level of TALENT, as the MAIN reason ... I think that is the FIRST AND FOREMOST reason for their insane level of success.. and everything else pales in comparison to that. And without THAT core asset, it wouldn't matter HOW charming, lovable, and funny they are as individual people, and how "intimately" they show that on social media... few people would even bother watching their "personal" social media postings/videos without being blown away by their massive level of talent FIRST... and even if they did, they might find it kinda fun/enjoyable for the time being, but they likely wouldn't return for much more. In other words... let's say there was another musical group out there, whose music, singing, and dancing were all "pretty good"... but nothing AMAZING like BTS. And let's say this group put out just as many "personal"/"intimate"/and fun social media postings and videos as BTS does... and had equally as charming, lovable, and funny personalities as BTS... and they were also just as good-looking and stylish as BTS. If I happened to see these videos, I might like it and enjoy them somewhat at that moment in time, but if I weren't super into them *as a musical group* (if I didn't love their music that much), I wouldn't continue watching those videos, and also wouldn't care about it all that much... not matter HOW charming and fun those guys were in the videos. First and foremost, it's BTS' phenomenal *TALENT* (their amazing vocals, songs, dancing, choreo, stage performances, stage presence, etc... all of which is just *ON ANOTHER LEVEL* from all other artists) that is the MAIN reason why they have attained so many fans, and why they got so huge. Then, the *ADDITION* of all their "personal" and fun social media postings and videos - on *TOP* of their talent - only got us hooked into them even DEEPER. (that's why this fandom is so huge and so hard-core devoted). But it's not all the social media fun stuff that's the MAIN reason for their insane level of success. That's only SECONDARY to their phenomenal level of TALENT.

social media is not a reason, its' a way. ARMYs could stan any other group if it's "social media" because a lot of groups used social media aswell, at one point when i first staned, Got7 was a little bit bigger than BTS and they had a LOT OF CONTENT ASWELL, that's why i disagree with that mindset, social media is just a platform to discover them and other groups, why people stan is still because BTS' music, lyrics, choreo and who they are.

Many of us ARMYs went around apologizing for our fandom's behaviour and calling out other ARMYs who did this. Last but not least when BTS won their billboard (That is last year) the "above everything and peaceful" VIPS tried to bring ARMYs hard by flexing Big Bangs age or the amount of money they had. Now all every k-pop fan does is whine that BTS is not the only good group.

I wish people would stop focusing on the whole "oh they have a huge fandom" and started talking about WHY people became fans in the first place. And also the fact that they are social media stars itself is not a reason for their success. Y'all are about to witness a bunch of companies trying to follow the "BTS formula of success"... and honestly? people are NOT going to buy this. BTS truly has broken down the artist/fans barrier that normally exists and that is because of how GENUINE and RELATABLE they are. There is not formula there.

And if he or his company starts unnecessarily neglecting BTS for the new group, I'm planning an event for him.

when people say "bts is famous because they dance really well" i laugh so much. Yeah they are excellent performers but in kpop there are lots of them. BTS is not just a dance group. BTS is a group that was able to connect with their fans through music, lyrics, videos, their true selves and messeges. When you feel connected with someone that gives you words to keep you moving in life you feel gratitude and also loved for that. They not only help you but also share with you their thoughts, problems, joys. It's so heartwarming when someone listens to you but also when someone shares with you pieces of their life. BTS is mostly a friend that makes you smile through music.

redlady4 actually RM did say that every member writes their own lyrics, V said too, but not all of it makes into the song. It's important for all of them to do that so to they can develop more skills and get more prespective. I don't think tho sns is the main reason of their success. Bc they've always been active on twitter since even 2012 and just these last 2 years they've been growing so fast. 11:30 i mean i guess in a way psy might have somehow paved the way for kpop in bts when he had his few hits. but tbh i myself did not know there was this whole thing called kpop when psy surfased in western charts. i thought he was just a random dude who made a viral hit (much like some western artists who have like a weird viral hit and thats it). maybe it was different to others but i did not get the feel or need to check out kpop bc of psy. after bts i did. i dont remember psy being introduced as someone from korea or kpop when he performed or did interviews (idk if he was it was so long ago), but korea and kpop are often mentioned when bts is present. and ive seen multiple people find kpop and different groups/artists after theyve found out about bts (maybe bts wasnt the right group for them and they were just the bridge between the person and the right kpop artist for them). and i think its partly bc psy only had his one hit in the west, and the second one wasnt even that big (at least in my country in europe), while bts has constantly ranked better and has a whole album on number one, instead of just one viral song at number 2. idk just my experience. only knew kpop after bts even tho i knew about psy as well
@abbeylinsky32376 жыл бұрын
ann Yeah, I agree. I remember when Gangnam Style came out and how it was everywhere, but I don't remember thinking "Oh, I wonder what else Korean music has to offer." Maybe it's because what America was exposed to of Psy was the weird, novelty-type songs, not anything really meaningful or normal. I can't say for sure. However, I too am so glad that I was exposed to BTS. They have expanded my interests and understandings not only in music, but also in other cultures and people. I love them! 🤗

I did check out other Korean music when Psy surfaced. I didn't LIKE the idol groups, so I stopped listening to them after a few tries. Psy was often introduced as being from Korea, but not from Kpop. BTS has it easier because they're single and there are seven of them; part of the reason Psy quit promoting outside of South Korea is that he was lonely and wanted to be with his family.
@mann72986 жыл бұрын
klunb yea im sure some checked out korean music after psy, just didnt even cross my mind. but i still dont think that many found out about kpop through psy (even tho im sure some did), at least compared to how many have found new kpop groups/artists through bts. so idk how significant psys success was to kpop, compared to bts', to speak about psy paving the way for kpop, like bts is doing now. i guess the even more advanced social media plays a part as well. im sure they have it easier, it often is like that with groups vs. solo acts. bts is also young, its often more fun to travel around the world when youre younger, vs when youre older like psy.

Gosh.. It's 2 at night where I live and instead of sleeping, I just wanna cry right now.. These past two days have been so overwhelming as an Army for me.. So many good news that it almost feels unreal.. Especially knowing how BTS was never really given that much attention for their musicality and producing talents in Korea and how people always mocked BTS for being famous just internationally but not in their own country, makes this video much more special and heart touching for me.. They stated BTS as not just an idol group but as "Artists", and that's all I want right now... Feeling so damn proud.. 😭😭 Also thank you so much for translating this news.. 🙏🙏
@cloudwalker71346 жыл бұрын
I keep reading that BTS used to "not be famous in their own country", and only famous internationally. (But for sure, they're famous in Korea now and have been for quite a long time now). Can someone please explain to me why they weren't that popular in Korea earlier on? I mean, their talent is just fucking off the charts amazing, so why wouldn't Koreans know about them and love them back then too? Was it b/c there was so much competition in Korea with all the other K-pop groups vying for everyone's attention... esp. from the Big 3 companies? And/or some other reasons?
@neetu_13226 жыл бұрын
cloudwalker 713 I can't give you like 100% appropriate answer for that question because even BTS were stressed on why they weren't getting popular in the first 2 years of their career.. They did get few Rookie Awards but the general people hardly knew them due to which their songs didn't do that well on charts.. Mostly it has to do with coming from a small company.. From what I have heard the big 3 companies has it really easy for promotions.. In fact they don't even need to promote their groups that much because as soon as a group from one of the company debuts or even before debuting , there are lots of anticipation going around and the general people easily notices them through the good articles in Naver.. There are rumors that Big3 can manipulate the articles on Naver.. However can't say it for sure since its just rumors.. However there aren't that many articles written for groups from small company like BTS.. And general people of Korea don't really use KZbin or Twitter that much back at 2013 like the international people do.... General people recognizes groups from Naver and radio plays.. That's why people didn't know who BTS was..They may have heard their song here and there but weren't that interested because they are obviously not from Big3.. The second reason might be their music ,lyrics and umm..appearance?.. For the first 2 years, their songs were purely hiphop and had very hard beats and kinda like not-so-polite lyrics.. They looked rough and tough in appearance with all those chains and hairstyles which wasn't really appreciated by general public.. It was same with BigBang too during their debut days..The people were more interested in soft songs, ballads and kinda like cutesy stuff.. To put it in simpler way, BTS' songs were ahead of their time.. In my point of view, if BTS releases their songs like "N.O", " No more dream", "Danger", " Boy in love" , etc in present time, those songs will do great on charts cause the time has changed and people are into hiphop now rather than back then.. That's why they got their first win after "I need you", once they toned down the hard hiphop sounds.. BTS are talented.. They wrote and produced their own songs but the general people didn't know the fact cause they couldn't promote themselves on variety shows.. People often complain about BTS not going to variety shows but the truth is they weren't really invited on TV shows for few years and eventually they got used to not going and promoting on social medias by themselves.. That's why they weren't really popular in Korea.. In fact people have started recognizing BTS only from like 2 years.. Internationally they are popular cause of their involvement in music production.. The main problem that was holding the international people from enjoying kpop was that it was really maufactured.. However the fact that BTS were highly involved with their own music broke the barrier and many international fans got interested.. Their personalities are definitely a plus point.. I wrote a lot ... 😂😂 Hope you read all of it. Lol 😂

Thank you for writing all of this ^-^ I am a fan of them since their debut and I was always sooo confused why no one seemed to know or like them, because I personally thought that they were just freaking talented and I really liked their style (I'm really not into the whole cute-stuff... so their Hip Hop sound and also their lyrics were refreshing and something I totally loved listen to!). Now, 5 years later, I slowly being to understand how the whole KPop industry and business works and how difficult it is for groups from smaller companies to become so successful and well-known. It makes me much prouder to see what they have accomplished! People were looking down on them and I was always so sad, because they were so underappreciated. I was actually a little bit salty back then in 2015 when they got their first win and only then people started to like them... (not salty, because they won, but because people were suddenly like "Yeah, BTS is SO GOOD" when they were dissing them just 1-2 years before their first win with I Need U...). I also don't really understand when people say, that they've changed a lot since 2013 and don't even want to think about their beginnings and "cringe" when you mention Bulletproof pt.2 or No More Dream... Like, why? I mean, yeah, their style (more "fashion style") changed, but they are still writing dope lyrics and slay with their raps and dance etc. and you can hear it's a BTS song... Also, I fell in love with them during their debut time and I still listen to their old songs and love them. When you know the full albums and not just the songs with MVs, you also know, that they had similar songs to their new ones back then. They just matured, became more confident in their work and are experimenting with different styles and genres. But they still stay true to themselves and not just do what's popular or trendy now. I truly love them. I guess, I never felt so touched by another group before. I also like other KPop groups (I listen to KPop since 2005), but BTS are special to me
@cloudwalker71346 жыл бұрын
Neetu_ 13 Thank you so much for that detailed explanation... it was very helpful and informative to me in understanding why BTS wasn't popular in Korea in the earlier years. I had always been kinda baffled by that b/c their talent is so clearly amazing... but now I kinda get it. Btw, since it seems becoming successful is very hard to do for musical artists from small companies (and not from the Big 3), do you have any idea how BTS broke out of that trap, and started to develop such a huge global fanbase over time? Obviously, they did it through social media... but I mean, how did it even spread so far and so wide.. to so many people, and in so many different countries, as is the case now? Was it by word of mouth, and just regular people sharing with each other? Did it start off in Korea, with some Korean fans, and then gradually spread to a few other countries.. and then build from there? I don't know if you would know this or not...

Mareike Sygusch Thanks for your post.. it was very interesting to read. I'm sorta relatively new to BTS (I just found out about them late last year!... yeah, kinda late to the show 😁).. so it's interesting to me to read stuff from people who have been fans of theirs for a long time (years), and can share more about their history and back story. (Btw, I say I'm "sorta relatively new" to BTS, but I don't really *feel* new, b/c I've gotten deep into them and learned a lot about them, quickly, during these last several months!!) Wow, you have been listening to Kpop since 2005? That's a pretty long time... may I ask how you got introduced to it back then? B/c it wasn't really popular back then, was it?

I am surprised that all the articles and news related to BTS's chart success is micro analyzing everything, bringing it down to simple key words like "sns/skills" etc. They worked hard for this but heck, sometimes you just need good luck and karma on your side. Music isn't a business plan/model to replicate. That isn't the point of music at all. "razor sharp dance moves" lemme tell you non/new K-pop stans, who are the majority of BTS fans, didn't really give a shit about dancing when we first came across them. Their music makes you FEEL things man, their lyrics give you strength, their sincerity and gratitude makes you love them. I know kpop companies are going to try so hard now to try to replicate this but... Not everything can be achieved like this. And the western music scene is so, so different from the Korean Music Industry. People like Rihanna, such a veteran in the US Music industry, took 8 years to make it to #1 on Billboard 200. Achievements like these aren't easy, and not a set formula that can be used to help any other group achieve chart domination. BTS's chart success also comes from the grassroot initiatives of the fandom. Never have I EVER seen a fandom as dedicated as armys, that love their group so much and helps them achieve such miracles. BTS obviously has to have good music in order to appeal to so many people being loyal to them.
@loveyourselftear93056 жыл бұрын
That's exactly why they will never get the "formula" it will eventually lead to a failure as it's impossible to replicate sincerity and true emotions.

BTS uses social just like any other artist. If others have logic like BTS SUCCESS = SOCIAL MEDIA,then every artist should have this much success...So,no... BTS SUCCESS=THEIR TALENT,THEIR CHARACTER,THEIR STORY,THEIR EFFORT TO CONNECT WITH THE FANS.💜

I disagree that social media is why BTS made it to the top. It’s their music and their sincerity and lot of other intangibles. I’ve listened to other k-pop music and they have nothing on BTS! That’s my opinion of course. Thanks for sharing this piece of Korean media, David! 💜

Vicky W not only that, all these other groups all have social media platforms he mention but they still as organized as ARMY. But reason why ARMY does all these things for BTS is the music , lyrics, the people they are. Man they really don't know BTS nor ARMY, I bet you they haven't even heard the music. When the anchor said just litsen to some of their music of course the put the strong dance songs with the moves ( you know which ones I mean BST) instead of picking Sea, or Dead Leaves, Run, Spring Day or Pied Piper anything. Even when he mention Spine Breaker (Beapsae ) he didn't even play that one.

IKR! They always say social media made them big but in reality it’s the meaning behind their music that really captured people’s attention. They know social media is very accessible so tell me why only BTS made it this far and achieved all this success? It’s really because of their dedicated fans who loved their meaningful music, and hardwork.

Yeah I agree, its difficult to descrip bts success in western market coz there are many reason and many factors, but wtf it is skill and talent are still factor no. 1 and bts have all (skill, talent, aura, performance, fandom, social media, etc). Maybe luck and fate is one of undeniable factors coz I think some kpop group are talented, hard working and have big fandom too but not necessarily they can succeed in US like bts did.

They keep saying what differentiates bts from the rest is social media - namely Twitter. I think they're wrong. It's more about the fact that they've been keeping us well fed. Ever since their debut they've been feeding us comeback after cowmabck. And in between comebacks they did bangtan bombs, AHL, run episodes, bon voyage (their own variety shows). And then there's the whole fan culture. The inside jokes, the vines, memes, the funny videos etc. That brought us all together. And then there's the hardships we went through with bts that connected us more and more. Everytime people told us bts are great but they'll never achieve this and that made us.want to prove them wrong. Most importantly bts themselves are just 7 wonderful individuals with different personalities that match so well like the starts brought them together. They were underdogs in the industry and now they are living legends. I think with bts you cant just point to one reason for their success. It's everything brought together that contributes to their success.

I agree ! The most important is they moved us with their story in music . Whatever they felt they will sincerely expressed it in music and shared the feeling with army. We even know themself thru their own album and mixtape. This is unique about BTS i never saw in any other kpop artist in general.

I totally agree , everyone is always saying they are only successful because of Social Media and Luck , which couldn’t possibly get them this big whatsoever. Their originality , their unique personalities, their music containing raw and relatable lyrics , them sharing personal things with us ARMYs , always mentioning us first when winning award , things like that makes us so close , and we are always there for them and vice versa

UUUUUHHH that "music critic" doesn't know what he's talking about. he said if BTS can stay in top 10 for 2-3 weeks, then Korea will finally recognize them as having conquered U.S. music market??? does he not know even mainstream U.S. artists can't even reach top 10 or debut in top 10, and only reach it over time, sometimes months or a whole year. Havana by Camilla Cabello debuted at #99, and it reached #1 at some point, and that's a way more popular song than Fake Love. just appreciate that BTS even debuted with top 10. i hate "pros" that don't do their research and are quick to discredit BTS.

BTS came from a very humble beginning..and this is what inspires me. They have positive attitude towards hardship and bad situation. They kept their feet on the ground. They started small and step by step they reached the top. What I love about them is that they don't care what other may say about them as long as they are making good stages, music and great performance to their fans. They trust each other and they trust their fans thats why fans are bringing back the love they gave. BTS you got our back..so proud of you! And here in the Philippines you're really famous. When I go to a cafe sometimes i can hear your music. Daebak! More of success. ❤ Doren from Philippines!

It’s a common misconception that idol groups couldn’t break into the western market. Like they said, Psy peeked at #2. Big Bang and Super Junior has been touring the world for years. The reason they, and BTS, are widely accepted is because they know who they are and they don’t try to change to fit different standards. The reason BTS is loved is because love is the message they spread.

Thanks for the translation, but I hope some analyst realize how different the korean and US charts are. Our market runs slower and can take time to get a hit,unless your'e established here. What BTS did was amazing since it was mainly backed up with fandom and little airplay/general public support. There should be no time limit set to stay on the charts to verify "conquering" when BTS are still new to the western market against the likes of Drake who's streams fill up the top of the charts. A grammy would be nice to, but I expect it to take time without putting pressure on BTS like there is a time limit. Comparing BTS with Psy chart wise is wrong also, since respectively Psy went viral, while we armys are aiming for longevity in the market. I think the intentions were good, but some of the comments rubbed me the wrong way especially when he talked about the social media aspect of BTS success, like that is the sole reason that they're doing well.

Tears fall out from my eyes too! 😬 On a serious note, I think this guy Bang Shi Hyuk is a “low-key” absolute genius! If this 7 members were managed by other company (let’s say the Big 3) I don’t think they will be the phenomenal BTS they are today. Bang PD Nim is a true leader. A very smart CEO/Producer. Total respect and admiration for this guy 💕 And of course for BTS 💓

David, thank you for translating this and uploading these broadcasts! It provides a lot of insight to international fans. You are right about how BTS used/uses social media as a tool to carve out a place in our hearts. I became curious about BTS because of their catchy music and their incredible dancing. However, I got sucked into the BTS A.R.M.Y. by watching and laughing at their countless video clips, Run! BTS episodes, and fan-made crack videos and other compilations. Also, when I read the translated lyrics and theories about how deep their music is and how smart these guys are, I fell hard. I think every fan can relate to the characteristics of one or more member, while also admiring and aspiring to be like others. Mind you, I’m a 39-year old wife and mother of three kids. None of my kids knew about BTS before. I just heard about them when they were on all my favorite talk shows (Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel, and James Correa) back in 2017. I didn’t particularly like ‘DNA’, but their apparent popularity intrigued me, and I watched the ‘MIC DROP remix’ video. I’m so glad I did, because it showed me a side to them that I could really get into. All in all, I think BTS is popular because of its MEMBERS and BigHit’s permission to let them do the music they want, address the topics they care about, and manage their own Twitter account. Also, RM doesn’t get enough credit. This man is really a genius and wise beyond his years. Without him, BTS wouldn’t exist. The group was literally formed around him. Like the music critic in the video stated, each member has their own unique characteristic, and BTS wouldn’t be the same without them. As much as I love their music, I really enjoy watching the guys in any media form. Like, if they only did a reality show/variety show, I would totally watch that. They are so entertaining and hilarious together. Okay, now I’m rambling. I just wanted to thank you for this video! 🙏🏼

Thanks David! Much appreciated!!! Whenever people talk about BTS's success I expect them to talk about their focus on SNS and I quietly roll my eyes because yes yes okay that is a big part of it. But I appreciate it a lot when they get into the very heart of why so many people actually _stick_, and it's because of their messages and their genuineness in their music, and their openness. It's why I stuck. I enjoy kpop a lot. It's fun, it's really cool with its varied and experimental concepts, but.. I don't get invested. With BTS, they had a door that could get fans deeper into them and connect with their sentimentality and their humanity. Kpop.. most often than not, great to enjoy at face value (we all need varied kinds of entertainment in our lives, not a bad thing), with a few exceptions ofc. But because BTS is opinionated and has views and messages and thoughts that they openly share in their music, I can't help but get attached and want to go on their journey with them. I want them to succeed and climb because I see their ambitions and hopes and dreams, and they see mine! It's just organic and natural and I see them as fellow humans, not untouchable stars. It can be nice to feed into that, some agencies love crafting their idols images as untouchable sometimes and though it's a good tactic to get fans, it's also unhealthy and ends up involving a lot of projection and fans end up treating their idol as a commodity and end up feeling like they own them almost. Sooooo yeah I've been thinking a lot about this these days.

Social Media has been around for a while now and the fact that BTS actually Bighit had the smart idea of actually using it was such a great strategy. They were smart in using that which nobody ever thought of using. Along with amazing music and amazing composing and producing these guys are so full of talent
