When I go to close the spread, why does it ask if i'm expecting a credit or debit? Should the trade already know?

Ah yeah, that could happen, likely due to the big difference in the bid and ask. The trade should know theoretically, but sometimes in reality the bid swings into the negative, so RBH is making sure you are submitting what you intended. I like it better this way so there is no surprise.

@@MMMHUMMEL To simply put, credit means get money, and debit means pay money. Open a put credit spread should be "get money" = expect credit, that's why it's called credit spread. You receive money first. When you close a put credit spread, you typically will "pay money" to close it, which is essentially debit. I agree with you Robinhood should know this logic but the system is built based on the math of the spread itself, which is not perfect, that's why it confuses people, so Robinhood is stepping in to prompt you "hey debit or credit"? Similarly: - opening a call credit spread = get money first = expect credit. - closing a call credit spread = pay money = expect debit. You can technically do "expect credit" when closing a credit spread to capitalize some fluctuation of the spread value, but it's typically very hard to fill and you might not end up closing it successfully. That's what I know haha. Does this help?
