So a bit of trivia. Back in the 1980s, the Federal government intended to build a polar ice breaker under the "Polar 8 Project." It was going to be a heavy ice breaker, capable of going to the pole, and potentially nuclear powered. The project got far enough along that the shipbuilding consortium out west procured the steel for the project. Then the federal government cancelled the project. That steel was then used to build the two Spirit class ferries. So, they're built out of much higher grade steel than they would have otherwise been.
