I learned a great tip when cutting batting on a cutting board. Lay down a piece of newspaper, packing paper or any paper you have laying around. Lay your batting on top. Cut your batting and the paper eliminates any batting fibers from accumulating on your cutting board. It is magic!

I liked the idea of cutting the little scraps up for stuffing. I always keep a fabric bag (about the size of a small pillowcase) hung next to my sewing machine. I add all the little cutting scraps and batting until it's full. Sew the top together and donate for an animal bed. Lots of vets like these to use after surgery, they can be used and thrown away. I have also donated to Salvation Army or Goodwill with a note saying its stuffed with new clean scraps. It's amazing how fast these little bags fill up and no waste.

Enjoyed this video of batting scraps. One of the things I have done for years and so have my quilt group done is to use both batting and fabric scrap to make a pet pillow. We have donated these to vets in the area but I also find pet lovers love them. I sew some scrap fabric together (about the size of a pillowcase) and hang it in my sewing room. As I sew I throw in all the scraps I get as I sew. When the bag is full I sew the bag together and donate somewhere. The vets I know like to use them in the cages when animals have had surgery. They are soft and comfy and they can be thrown away when soiled. They are also easy to wash. Hope this little tip helps other sewers.

I have found that my leftover Quilter's Dream in Request weight is perfect to replace the fiber pad that covers the lint trap inside my canister vacuum. I cut them to match the size of the pull out plastic fiber mat and put one 4.5x4.75 piece of battinf over top of the fiber mat and insert it into the spot which also houses the vacuum bag. It collect miniscule particles of dirt/dust and can easily be thrown out after every 2nd use of the vacuum. This allows for much better smelling vacuuming!

I saw a video where they made a dog and cat beds by sewing a one yard piece of fabric together and made what looked like a trash bag. You then take that "bag" and put it into your trash can for your sewing scraps. You can then put all of your fabric scrap cuts, thread and any small batting (cut into small pieces) that you may have left into that bag. When your bag gets full then you sew the one final seam to close in all of your scraps and the dog or cat has a new bed. These work great for your house, dog shelters or even vet offices

Years ago an online friend in Ireland posted one of your videos on the Craftster forum (which is now called lettucecraft) and I have been watching ever since. This was the video that got me so excited to think she'd introduced me to someone in Hamilton, which is where I live. I love those scrappy postcards and was SO happy to learn of another stitcher in town. Now I know you are close but not quite my neighbour. Perhaps you've learned this trick by now but I use a bit of stiff packing foam (the rougher stuff that comes packed around electronics sometimes) to clean cutting mats. Just rub it over and the fluff comes right out, not even any pressure is needed.

Great ideas for using up batting. I give the small pieces to our quilt shop. A person there makes pillows for the animal shelter, and she uses the small batting and fabric scraps to stuff the pillows. Also, I tape the pieces together with batting tape. You cut the pieces as you showed in the video, then butt the pieces together, put the tape down and iron it. I find this easier to do than sewing them together. When I sew them, they never slay flat. Also, really appreciate the tip that the batting has a wrong side and a right side. I never knew that. Thanks for all the great information and the very concise way you explain it.

I even do my small batting this way, especially when I'm needing a stress relief, mindless sewing. Cleans my area and when I get a size big enough for an easy placemat I roll it up and restart the next pieces. You'd be surprised how fast this goes if your cutting mat is right next to your sewing machine. Most scraps already have a straight edge to start with so I sew all these together first before I start my double cutting. Once i have several placemat sized pieces, if I need larger, these can be squared to any size and put together and used. I use the back side of my mat and an eraser to clean. These placemat size works great to practice free motion quilting. Awesome video Karen, as usual. You are a joy to watch and learn from. TY

Love all your common sense ideas and explanations. Another thing I do with batting scraps is to cut them into squares that I use in making rag quilts. I cut them an inch smaller than the size of squares I use for the quilts- eg. 4 inches for 5 inch cotton squares. Then when I am ready to assemble the quilt I just take a stack of the batting squares and sew. 😊

Loved this video. I always save my scraps but never really used them. Recently after watching this I was making a quilt for charity. I was proud of myself because I saved money and used my left over pieces of fabric for the quilt backing. Then I pulled out my left over batting and sewed it together to have a piece big enough for the quilt. I ended up having to buy nothing more to compete my quilt! Batting is so expensive unless you find it on sale. I have also used my batting pieces for his and burp cloths so that they are more absorbing for baby and mama.

Wow - I have always butted edges together but never knew the overlap-and-cut method- this is a game changer for me- thank you!! I didn’t have luck with using cotton batting for stuffing- it would not dry fully when I washed the stuffed item. Will give it a go again with much smaller pieces.

Polyester batting will dry better and be lighter in weight for children's items. Just be sure the child does not have a polyester allergy.

I wonder if cutting it in small pieces help it dry better

I've had that same issue with the dog beds I've made. They just will not dry. But mine were mostly fabric scraps. I thought it was just me and I had stuffed them too full.

I cut out two basic snowman shapes. Sewed them together, leaving a small opening. Stuff with scraps and decorate as you wish. They make great ornaments.☃️

I had a monstrous amount of batting and cut all of it into 10” squares. They stack up very neatly and I’m not afraid to grab and use them. Rag quilts, quilt as you go, and lately they are perfect for these 3D flower petal pillows I’ve been making.

Thank you! These tips are brilliant. I'd be interested in a pillow video, as well as one on how you make postcards.

The long pieces of cut off batting are also good to use in the jelly roll rug patterns.

Darn, beat me to it. Just need to cut up into 2 1/4 " 50 yard strips. I found making it a bit more narrow made it easier to fold the fabric around.
