I learnt this sixty years ago, in England with my grandmother, just after the second world war, we used metal templates to cut the papers, old envelopes, or any stiff paper we could lay our hands on, we used every scrap of cloth ,or recycled clothes. We stitch through the papers , enough to secure the fabric however small to the paper, the papers were reused several times, untill they lost their stiffness. Tacking threads were pulled out ,and also reused .squares, diamonds, octogons ,hexagons, triangles, and coffins, were all used.

I invariably sew through the edges of the papers occasionally. But I learned that it takes more force to push the needle through the paper and strains my sewing hand more than desired. The best stitches only graze the paper edge and don't puncture it. Your hands will thank you.

For a grandmother’s flower type, I quilted a daisy sort of flower centered in each rosette. Mine also had a “path” or sashing of solid plain hexie rows between each rosette, in which I quilted a small swirl in each. That made it easy to change direction as necessary.

Good luck with your surgery, I hope all goes well. I had foot surgery and was not aware of this process. Hope it helps with the recovery time.
@blowitoutyourcunt76753 ай бұрын
Long overdue answer to probably long solved problem - zip cord your sewing peddle to your table leg at knee height! Commercial Sewing Machines are made with a knee knocker sewing pedal because that type of repetitive strain on the foot is ridiculous when your sweatshop sewing is your day job! I had ankle surgery on my dominant foot and had to train myself to a knee knocker position to get anything done during those horrible weeks of recovery! Nowadays whenever my foot or ankle is straining I put my sewing pedal back on the table leg and knee knock it! Cheers

An important note for first time thimble users: Thimbles come in different sizes. Place the thimble on your finger and shake your hand around, if it flies off it's too big. If you have use a thimble before and hated it, it probably was not the right size!

I use a die cut with my fabric to cut exact shapes plus a die cut to cut out the smaller paper template. I use a Big Shot and it works great.
