You make such sweet thoughtful comments about the lady who made the quilt. You connect with her even though you’ve never met. That’s how it is with people of a same persuasion even though we aren’t all able to express it with words. Quilts/quilting is/has its own group of souls who connect through generations. I’m sure that, if she could see you, the lady is smiling and giving a slow nod of approval while saying, ‘ I knew that she would come along for only the right quilter would be called to finish my job.’

This past year I was gifted a lot of partially completed or fully completed squares that were part of a church sewing group project from 25 to 30 years ago. I finished them as best I could, quilted them, and wrote a story called Salvaged Squares. I then gifted these quilts to a woman’s center as a reminder that God can use what we may think of as Damaged goods.

Maybe that quilt was made during WWII when fabric was hard to come by and ladies would "trade" for different fabric or cut up old worn out clothes. The quilt turned out lovely Karen. You used a nice pattern for the quilting. What a special quilt to give back to your friend. The second quilt is just lovely. I like the patterns you used in the different parts of the quilt. They really stand out and add so much to the look of the quilt. What a great gift!

Karen your tea dyed fabrics will fade in time. I did an ugly duckling challenge that had two bright fabrics that needed to be darkened so I did as you did. The quilt is one that I am the proudest of but that pink and that green fabric has lightened over the years. It is hanging on the wall in my basement (I lovingly call it Jan’s world Down here) hall where it gets no direct light. It still looks good but I wanted to share my experience with you. I made the quilt about ten years ago. Enjoy your longarm! Congratulations!

I had a similar experience. I agreed to take some fabric from the neighbor of a quiting friend (I'm a beginner, mind you) that had been passed down thru her family for several generations, all hand stitched. One is a double wedding ring, pieced but needing repair; one is a Dresden plate design with only a few of the plates on a blue fabric; and the last was a ring of hexes around a center hex with most of them on a square of muslin. I started with the latter one, had to put a couple of the hexies on other muslin squares, and used the Pattern Poole method of QAYG. I cut leftover hexies in half and Incorporated them in the border. The "old timey" quilt came out pretty cute.

I loved this! I bought 60 hand-pieced grandma's flower garden quilt blocks made with 1920's and 30's fabric at an antique fair. All I needed to do was to add the white background to finish it!! Sounds easy... but I had never done anything like it before. The blocks were like brand new and almost every block was different fabric. I could tell from how they were sewn that different people worked on them. I took it to my parents in England and got stuck there for an extra two months because of the pandemic. I had bought similar background fabric to the only two completed blocks but of course it wasn't exactly the same. I taught myself to hand sew the hexagons slowly but surely. I would sit and watch movies with my parents as I quietly pieced together the blocks. How I loved working on each different block and couldn't help thinking about who sewed it all those years ago. Maybe they had gone through the great flu epidemic and now I was going through the Corona Virus pandemic 100 years later. My parents and I couldn't leave the house except for short walks and my cousins brought us food. It was wonderful therapy to see it come alive. I finally came home and finished it about a year after I started it and almost 100 years after someone else began it. The slightly different background fabrics do not detract from its beauty at all. This was a big accomplishment for me. A special 85 year-old friend has just finished hand- quilting it. She's probably a similar age to the quilt itself. I was worried the imperfect blocks would spoil it, but I really don't think you can tell now that it's quilted. I need to bind it but I am not sure if I should use the white background fabric or do a coloured binding. Any thoughts? :) Thank you for always brightening our days with your beautiful quilts and personality!
@JustGetitDoneQuilts3 жыл бұрын
There is no right answer. And if you ask 5 different quilters on what colour to use you’ll get 5 different answers. You saw in the video how I folded the binding fabric to audition the colour. Do the same. I usually try out a copy of colours in the quilt, lighter and darker…and one crazy colour that I would not have chosen. Just know that there are many right answers. Chose one you like. I love the story. Be sure to write it down ❤️🤗

Be careful using tea or coffee for dying - the tannins in both can weaken the fabric fibers over time. Also, you could've used onion skins to dye the binding fabric into a sepia or more yellow tone. Otherwise I like how it all turned out. You did a fantistic job on it!

I just adore these quilt story movies! Like the fireworks quilt and the first quilt you started piecing. Thanks for all your lovely work!

I always enjoy your videos, but this one is really extra-special. I got goosebumps when you showed the completed antique quilt. I gasped when you showed the back of the carpenter's star. I'm considering buying a long-arm...I've wanted one for years...my 65th birthday is a few months off. What better way to celebrate my official entry into "senior citizenship" than with a long-arm? But...do I want to give up the floor space? Do I want the responsibility of maintaining the machine on my own? I've found a new place to take classes and rent a variety of machines. I can test-drive them, although I'm pretty sure I know what I want. Would I be better off renting? It would be less convenient, as the shop is a 45 minute drive from my home. Right now, on a quiet Sunday morning, it would be wonderful to go down to my basement and longarm to my heart's content. I'm hoping I can learn more to help me refine my decision. So, please keep posting about your long-arm journey. I gather you put quite a lot of thought into your choices. I'd love to know more about how you made your decision, how your skills are progressing, and how you feel about maintenance. Thanks!!!

I would learn and rent first. And then go to a big quilt show and take some of the different models for a test drive. They might load differently, or have a different feel. And local support is key. I have taken several classes with my local dealer that have helped tremendously.

I have an old quilt that I bought about 40 years ago. Some of the fabric is splitting without a way that I can see to repair it. It lies across my loom and my cat loves to sleep on it. I have looked at often to see how to repair it. I have a second quilt also. It is a pinwheel but to me it looks like a German design. But it is a pinwheel and in good shape. Guess i need to find it. I had not sewed in 3 years after my daughter passed away from cancer. One day i walked into my sewing room and sat down to sew. I couldn’t even remember how to thread my 2 sewing machines. I got on you tube and relearned everything. I have been sewing and relearning how to Quilt since. I have learned a lot from your programs. Thanks for your help. Now i may be able to make it to the Houston quilt show. My daughter and I went often. October 28,2021 it starts. I will ride. The bus. It is fun. No parking!

Hi Karen, You described me in your opening .... I have a quilt that I've been wanting to get done since 2012. It's a gift for my sister and she is patiently waiting for it. Two years ago last June, I pulled it out and finally finished up the last borders, then couldn't get a backing to match. At that time the local quilt shop was closed to covid, the other local shop didn't have a backing that matched... I Ordered one I thought would match, but when it arrived it didn't. So I ordered another one, and it didn't match. Finally about six months ago, I found one in a antique store that finally opened from covid shutdowns and was doing a final sale to close their doors permanently. They had cotton fabrics they sold in the back of the store and i found a large pc. that i took a gamble on matching ... and low and behold it did. So now, I have the backing and the quilt ready to be quilted. Due to it's size and my disability with my muscles, I cannot quilt this, and due to my finances I can't afford yet to have it quilted, so it still waits to get finished. I am hoping to have enough saved up over the next month to finally be able to send it to the longarmer to get quilted. After that, I should be able to finish the binding, quickly as I love handwork. I'm hoping my sister is still alive to receive and enjoy it... but all of us are getting older and with covid,, we all live in uncertain times. Sorry my post is so long... I just wanted to share a bit of my story on ONE of my several UFO quilts waiting to be finished.
