I cannot articulate how well this game *didn't* age. it's agonisingly slow, you can softlock yourself in the maze very easily, navigating from one room to another takes an age, you can teleport across the mansion without warning (and it will take you a solid five or six minutes to navigate your way back to where you were), some puzzles are straight impossible to solve without looking at the hints book (which you have to backtrack to the library to read, taking another five or six minutes), NO cutscene is skippable, certain lines of dialogue will repeat several times per minute for the entire duration of your attempt at solving a puzzle, the music is poison, it's just... I have never been more grateful that people studied what makes a game fun, so that we don't have to live like this anymore

I know this is late, and I know this is really, really pedantic, but I actually watched THE MAKING OF THE 7TH GUEST when I had the game, and I have to defend the acting. The woman who directed the actors told them to play it as big as possible because of how poorly the technology was going to compress the video and how washed out it all was going to be. The only way to get anything across was to go full melodrama and she was 100% correct. It is one of my favorite examples of an artist adapting to the technical limitations, and the ridiculous hammy acting and vaudevillian costumes make it all so great. BTW I rewatched the documentary (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmGsiWeXn82fgqM) and I love its Waiting for Guffman "normal folks puttin on a show" vibe.

My FMV game recommendation is The Infectious Madness of Dr Dekker. You play as a psychologist who is the replacement for the recently murdered Dr Dekker. His killer is one of his patients (or his assistant) and it is up to you to not only find out who killed him but to also learn about your patients and their stories. ( everytime you play through the game there is a different killer and it's really cool!!)
