This week's guest is Justin Holman, singer of the band Revis.
Justin and I get into his formative years as a musician and how Revis came to be. The sudden success the band was able to have thanks to legendary producer Don Gilmore.
We get into a bit about the recording of their debut album, Places for Breathing, and what it was REALLY like for the band on the road. Touring with Pearl Jam, and what lead to the downfall of Revis.
We also catch up with what Justin has been doing since the bands break up and how his faith has inspired his upcoming album.
Intro Music: "Ambition" and "Chin Ups" by Chae Hawk

Not gonna lie, I was pretty bummed that this band didn't truly realize their full potential. Places For Breathing is still a personal favorite of mine & I listen to it very often today. Justin was an amazing vocalist. It's awesome to see that he comes off as a genuinely good guy. Great interview. Great to hear from Justin & awesome to see him give a very honest & open take on things that have transpired with the band. Wish him the best of luck on his new venture as a comic book illustrator/artist.

Cordelia Ylisse I’m glad you enjoyed this chat, and as i said in this chat that Justin was one of the first few people i had in mind when i started this podcast. I’ve seen so many comments on the bands music on here wanting answers to the same questions I’ve been asking myself for years, so I’m glad this has been able to provide some closure of sorts for fans of the band like it did for me. Thanks again for checking out this ep and check out the solo cd Justin released at the very end of last year, simply titled Holman.

People that know of Places for Breathing understand it holds its own place in music. Revis did not get the promotion they should have. I remember I happened to catch a small ad in the local magazine in ATL for their show otherwise I would have never know they were playing there. There were about 300 people at the show and they were incredible. I just stood in the front of the stage with a few others and took it in

Awesome interview Jon. I had the same unanswered questions as you. Revis was a big part of my early adult years to say the least. Since then my life has been radically changed similarly to Justin's. I recently did a Google search on Revis and saw him singing in his church. Tell you the truth, finding out his life was saved by Christ is better than any song. Appreciate the interview and hard work. Looking forward to his new material, perhaps I can share some of my music with him/you if interested.

Back in high school / college I had "Places for Breathing" pretty much on repeat, along with a couple albums that really hit home with me. As time passed, I moved on musically and left a certain era behind me. Now, just yesterday; I flew back from a wedding out of state and began unpacking some things and put my empty luggage back in storage. I saw the cardboard box of all my old CDs in the back corner, so I pulled it out and there was "Places for Breathing". All of those memories of walking to class, sitting up late on my computer, doing homework or cramming before a test. These guys were one of the bands that really got me through that time of my life. Solid interview, Im glad to have this album back in my life.

I'm still shocked at what this episode has meant to fans of the band. I did this for the same reason as everyone who's commented on it, I wanted to know what happened to the band and to Justin. It's funny that this ep as a podcast hasn't done all that well, but on here it is one of the most viewed and commented on video, all these years later. To me this is what's cool about this medium, is gettin someone who may not be the most famous person in the world, but has a great story to tell, especially those that pre dated the internet, at least in this iteration, and finally get some closure to decades long questions. Thanks for checking this out.

Incredible. Revis has always been such a huge mystery to me and I never understood what happened. Thank you Jon and Justin for the closure and the information. It's mind-blowing to hear that the second album went in such a different direction and honestly, knowing that, I'm pretty happy that it didn't come out. I respect that artists and bands have to innovate and express themselves artistically but 99% of the time I'm very disappointed when a band comes out with new stuff that is just so far removed from what they've done previously. I adore places for breathing and the "a better day" tracks and I'm thankful for them. I think I appreciate them even more now knowing that Revis could have gone down such a strange path.

Glad you got the closure I was desperately after as well. While this was one of the first episodes of my podcast, and I'd like to think I've gotten better at this in doing just under 200 eps in almost 3 years...but Justin was one of the first people I wanted to have one and find out more about what happened, cause like I said....the internet didnt really exist back then and no one knows what happened to these guys. I'm glad long time fans of the band are finding this and able to have their decades long questions answered and get closure on what the hell happened. Sadly this is a story I've heard too often from bands like this when I have the honor to interview them and find out why they broke up or what happened to a band that SO many people loved. I reference this interview often when people ask why I have certain people on, and it's like some bands mean the world to a lot of people, but maybe didn't reach level that you'd think they should've....and Revis is a band that seemingly was poised for greatness only to see it fall by the wayside for various reasons. I wish Revis had carried on, but in a way it's fitting they put out this one perfect record and went away than turned into a band we grew to hate for not being the band we fell in love with.

I just happened to think of Revis and Justin TODAY, so I started poking around and saw the usual older stuff, BUT also some newer stuff on KZbin with Justin singing/leading worship at church, etc, so I knew *something* had changed... :-) Justin was very patient and forthcoming in the interview - it was really great to finally hear "the rest.... of the story" of what happened to the great band Revis. Wishing Justin all the best, and blessings in his latest endeavor! (and if/when "Holman" starts "touring" with Newsboys, Skillet, Phil Keaggy, etc. on Big Church Night Out, or Kingdom Bound, if they're ever in the Western NY area and need a Christian rock bass player.... I pulled up Places for Breathing this week and I was instantly transported to the mid 2000's in my soul. I thought, Damn this shit still hits like it did back then, and I'm 38 now! Wow. Wish they made about 4-5 more albums at least. Just plain good songwriting.

Justin has a point of the music industry being “easier than it was” to get inside of, but here’s the counterpoint. It’s only easier in theory, but harder in reality. Due to over saturation.

So glad I came across this interview. It pretty much answered all the questions I had about what happened to them. Really it boiled down to the second album being rejected by Sony. Also Justin was not happy with there musical direction. After that it seemed the band could not work out there personal differences. Which is typically what happens with a lot of bands and maybe more so if there not being professionally managed by a label. Its really to bad because these guys had something special.

Everyone can see how gracious Justin was with his time and answering my questions candidly. I kinda wish this was done now, due to the fact I would've edited this to be more streamlined, and chopped myself out more, but this is the raw unedited chat, something I thought the fans of Revis and Justin would appreciate more. Jury is still out on that if you read some of the comments, but Im glad you found this and enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time.

Cause honestly it just didn’t really present itself based on some of the things Justin said when talking about the end of the band and his role in the end of the band and all that, and it seemed that there was still some sense of sadness surrounding how all that went down. @@BREWtallySpeakingPodcast I totally understand in retrospect. I was watching this episode in utter anticipation of getting some closure on that chapter, as I recall being so immensely excited based upon the marketing that had been ongoing at the time with Save Our Souls and the prospect that my favorite band was releasing new material with "Do we have to Beg". My dream for the past decade is that these mastered tracks somehow get released despite being in licensing hell so that all of us Revis fans can enjoy them.

I know there's more to discuss, and maybe Justin and I will do a part two soon, as it seems theres more to discuss based on all the comments, but my style now is more conversational and I think catching up would be pretty cool now as I feel Justin's life and my own are in different places than they were when we did this. Overall thanks for checking this out, def one of those I thought this would be self indulgent and no one would care and this, on YT at least, is one of my most popular episodes by far. I never had much sympathy for the plight of the music industry, as the internet began to rip the rug out from under them. The main reason is that from day one, as far back as the fifties with pop music, these companies fiercely ripped off the artists. Their reasoning has always been that they laid the money out for the bands to initially get started. And for the most part that is true, however between taking the lions share plus some profits from the music sales, as well as demanding the rights to the music itself, these companies had a constant stream of money coming in even long after the band became defunct, or died, or whatever. That would often leave the band having to make the bulk of their money on their performances. To me, that is horribly unfair, as the bands should be receiving a much larger percentage of the music sales. But, during those early years when everyone was worried about the demise of the companies, that was incredibly naive. They have the resources of finding ways to turn the system around to their favor, and have managed to do so.

Jon, gonna share some stuff. I was literally their #1 fan for a long time. I was in their top 8 on their Myspace page - thats how much i bugged them, lol. Justin, sent me that second unreleased album 13 years ago when he was "sure" Revis was dead. (He also sent me shirts for that second album, it was going to be called Fire and Ice) He mentioned Taste in the Flash, Red Letter Day and Metrosexual Man, but their single was called "From That Point On" (I'm dropping all this to prove i'm not foll of crap, lol) He's right, MOST of that album sucked, or at least didn't sound like "Revis" and needed polishing. (RLD & Taste in the Flash were pretty good though.) I was bragging about having the music unreleased on a Facebook fanpage one day like an idiot and Nathaniel saw it and was concerned because they were apparently still considering releasing the music. Justin Holman had to CALL ME (which in itself is surreal because PfB was my ringtone) and basically beg me not to give it out to anyone (which i hadn't but I would have had he not called me) and told me the band mates were all freaked out that some random guy on the internet has their album. I guess i was the "leak" you mentioned (which he did not talk about) but really he's the leak, he *mailed* it to me, lol. Just a funny anecdote. Did Justin send it to you after the podcast?
@BREWtallySpeakingPodcast
@BREWtallySpeakingPodcast 5 жыл бұрын
Solace and Dread Justin hasn’t sent me anything Revis related, i did get the new Holman album sent to me right after we did this chat, which was a bit earlier than everyone else. Would be interesting to hear the songs, i think the bigger takeaway for me was how much of the bands sound and approach wasn’t from Justin like i thought but their guitar player, and how much he really did for the band. Perhaps being more collaborative is what lead to the “revis” sound not being carried into the new material if the singular entity responsible for PFB’s sound as we knew it wasn’t the main/sole writer. Glad you found this, and thanks for the anecdote. Maybe i need to get Justin back on and catch up with what he’s been up to.

@@BREWtallySpeakingPodcast Yeah man thanks for doing this, most of what he said about the end of the band was similar to what i'd heard in internet rumors, but he gave a lot of dirt I didn't know about, like the weight thing. And,i saw pics of him after he quit Revis, Nathaniel WASN'T wrong, lol. it's part of your image. maybe a better way to say it though. I feel like i have this gem i can never show anyone, which sucks because I loved their music so much. I'll try to locate the CD sometime this week, I'm sure it's around somewhere, haha. Also while I knew nathaniel wrote "most" of the music it was crazy to hear him say that 99.5% of it was Nathaniel and he did virtually none with it.He really was just a front man. really makes me look at the band differently, I guess a more honest view. this interview gives me some closure to this.

I'm also a little sad he didn't delve more into Bob being fired from the band. He was kind of a firecracker and didn't like dealing with the label controlling everything about their daily lives, even down to the way they dressed. That's crazy. Hearing more about all his relationships with the band mates would have been cool. I also wonder how involved David Piribauer was - he seemed like he was kind of a contractor compared to the other guys.

Yea, it’s funny my wife always comments how complete strangers open up to me and tell me things they prob shouldn’t....at least to someone they barely know. I had a great hour convo with Joe from Fall our boy/the damned things a few months back while hanging at a bar after a TDT show, i wish i couldve gotten that on record, but that was an instance where my wife was like that’s a perfect example of someone just spilling all the tea. RWDtech that was probably it, by product sometimes of not having actual song titles in front of you to remember their full names.
