A mistake is mixing the reds with the whites when doing laundry. Becoming intoxicated, getting behind the wheel of a car, then driving around? These are choices. Bad ones. Not mistakes. ------ Edit: Just adding some more opinions. ------ The idea of a choice is that we make choices on purpose. We cannot make mistakes on purpose. Doing something on purpose makes it, by definition, a choice. When we choose something, we decide it's what we _want_ to do. Intention matters. I absolutely cannot stand when people make deliberate choices and then claim it was "just a mistake." At that point, you're either exceptionally stupid and have no idea what a mistake actually is, or you're blatantly trying to avoid taking responsibility for your _bad choices_ by changing the definition of your actions. Unless he thought the drink he imbibed was orange juice and his car was one of those PowerWheels toys, JT _chose_ to drink alcohol, then he _chose_ to get behind the wheel of a two-tonne motor vehicle, subsequently endangering not only his life but the lives of everyone else on the road with him, for which he deserves to be punished.

DWAI = Driving While Ability Impaired = “A person who is less able both mentally and physically to exercise clear judgment, sufficient physical control, or due care in the safe operation of a vehicle.” i.e.: The vehicle becomes a weapon when the driver is incapable of driving safely. Anyone and everyone in the vicinity of someone committing this crime, could have suffered bodily harm, even death. Serious consequences. A court of law found Timberlake guilty of a DWAI! Did anyone hear or see him convey a sincere apology…at all? He and his lawyer stood at the podium emoting defiance. The PSA would have garnered more respectful authenticity, if Timberlake would have started with a humbling and sincere apology. But he never did. During his career, has he ever? Is he capable? No!
@anonymouslady3267Ай бұрын
@TheBehavioralArts, Spidey, do you suppose Timberlake's contempt could be because if he wasn't a celebrity he would not be required to release any sort of apology or statement but since he is a celebrity he's held to a different standard and his life is under a microscope, especially in situations like this.
@anonymouslady3267Ай бұрын
Also, I was pretty pleased with myself when you were talking about the biggest facial touch you've seen, and I knew you were talking about that moment with Amber Heard!
@tiffanymichaels2429Ай бұрын
I felt something similar. It felt a lot like poor me because I've always been in the spotlight and everything I do will be judged. But he just seems like an arrogant douche bag who if he wasn't a celebratory wouldn't legsl get away with this crap. May get a slap on the wrist in court but the public will judge according to their standards. That can prove to be more harmful because a bad reputation can tank a career. He might need a little humbling.

I thought the 'unique nature' statement was the celebrity status and turmoil in a small town he would have caused. Plus may have been used in court since he looked at his lawyer like that. With the truck look. To me felt like he was annoyed it was interrupting him with the noise? Impatience?maybe is what i got. Also i notice at the beginning when his lawyer was talking he smirked?..when his lawyer mentioned the respect to police... Was an interesting moment anyway. Ty for all your work. IMO: celebrities or anyone with the same financial means should be held even more accountable for DUI charges since they can afford to hire a private sober driver 24/7. JT simply read from the same old don’t do this, hire a cab Uber etc script. Every celebrity is reading from the same script - not believing any of them.
@valerielevasseur8674Ай бұрын
Oddly, I think the statement *could* have a small positive effect, but as mythology rather than apology (it fails as the latter). So many people are against the IDEA of impaired driving, but can't seem to apply that to their own behaviour, always seemingly figuring they aren't really drunk or high. To this population, regardless of its rootedness in fact, JT's story could serve as a cautionary tale that you can be guilty of something even if you're "fine," having only had one drink. It doesn't moralize to them or call them idiots, as much as both would be apt. It lets them know, treating their chronic delusions as if they were fact, that they could still get in trouble. At this level, the social function of the story starts to transcend mere fact and the pesky little historical record, just as it does with national myths about cultural mosaics, founding fathers and glorious defeats in battle 500 years ago whose effects will one day be reversed just as gloriously. There are times, as in the aftermath of a civil war that fragments territory and kinship ties, that a myth brings about better results than a rigorous and relentless truth-seeking mechanism, let alone a tribunal. But no, it's not an apology, so it doesn't work as one. ETA: I'm not suggesting any of this was the intention. It failed in what it aimed to accomplish, but there's some small chance of accidental positive outcomes.
@TheBehavioralArtsАй бұрын
Wow! Really well expressed, thanks! So then let me ask you this, as a cautionary myth, does the verdict mitigate the lesson? Isn’t it conceivable that someone would look at this and say “k… so I can get in trouble if I drive after one drink but it seems it’s nothing more than a DWAI and a slap on the wrist, not a big deal.”
@valerielevasseur8674Ай бұрын
@@TheBehavioralArts That's definitely possible, and I'm really speculating for all of this - my expertise pertains to a larger scale where the myth's saturation within a population is a lot higher and there are strong incentives to buy-in. I think there's still some potential for some subset of JT's audience to hear that there was legal trouble - the hassle as much as the verdict - and think to themselves, "well, even though I am obviously blameless and always know when I'm good to drive, do I really want that much upheaval in my life?" Maybe I'm putting too much faith in their self-reflection or tendency to think ahead, but I just wonder if, for some, it lets them keep that false sense of perfect self-awareness intact (which is what keeps them from doubting their ability to drive in the first place) while simultaneously planting the seeds that some negative consequences, even if it's "just" arrest and a court date, could follow. It no longer relies on the near-impossible task of getting them to acknowledge their intrinsic fallibility - just shows them their life could be disrupted even if their Perfect Judgement conflicts with that of law enforcement. I don't love the feeling that I'm rooting for something other than truth in this context, but in other contexts, I've seen it allow the population of a post-civil war society carry on with life, dependent as they are on former enemies in the face of an incapable state.
@TheBehavioralArtsАй бұрын
@@valerielevasseur8674 hmmmm yeah. Interesting. I think maybe it depends on the person. Again, speculating of course. I think people who don’t ever drink and drive might think, as you suggested, “oh wow, I didn’t realize one drink can cause all this I better really never do that.” Where as someone who habitually drinks and drives might look at it and go “Pffff that’s it? A DWAI?!Good to know 🍻 “
@jodityler8799Ай бұрын
When the truck drove by, I was wondering if his attention to it was more along the lines of him feeling annoyance, as in, “ Umm… excuse me? I’m trying to talk here, and I’m important.”
@TheBehavioralArtsАй бұрын
Yep. Very possible the point is that this is something I pay attention to to see how locked in someone is to what they’re doing. If the brain is really dead focused, outside distractions tend to bounce off more easily. But you’re right he looks impatient.

Because of EXACTLY this right here his lack of remorse, his distancing words from his bad behavior, and this slap on the wrist. THIS is EXACTLY why JT is tanking and his tour is canceled. How the mighty have fallen, bye bye bye! 😂😂

it looked like Justine was checking his breath. His lips were perched out. He did something with his mouth. The quick move & the look around- maybe his breath was off. When the lawyer spoke of drinking, what's the thing people do to check if they drank too much.... check the breath.
@ritamarsiurano3478Ай бұрын
I think he was obviously embarrassed about the whole ordeal. He’s had a PR nightmare the last few years and this is just a nice little bow to wrap up his golden boy image and send it into the sunset. I think the chuckle to his lawyer was probably to remind himself of the right words to call the trial a “media circus” without calling it a media circus.

When Justin covered his mouth, I noticed that his mouth turned down. I thought that he was trying to cover up that "mouth flash", and was trying to play it off by pretending that there was something on his mouth. Do you notice that and what could that mean if anything?
@TheBehavioralArtsАй бұрын
The mouth turning down and the mouth block can be due to the same thing “Holding something back,” which often causes tension in the lips . I agree that the wiping seems a little deliberate or as an afterthought to justify the hand coming up. I don’t think all that was to wipe his top lip. Of course it could be, there’s no concrete way to rule it out. I just don’t feel it

As for the psa, I think that the lack of sincerity that people will feel will result in a less effective psa. However, I hardly think it's going to encourage people to run out and do what he did, because exactly what he did isn't known and also because everyone knows that rich people will get away with more than the average Joe

The general rule is men can have 2 standard drinks in 1 hour and stay under 0.05BAC. One drink in 2hrs and he’s done for DWAI (0.05-0.07). Doesn’t add up, that must have been one hell of a potent drink that he ‘finished the contents of’.

I think overall the PSA aspect was a net positive and he / they honored the obligation; nothing more. I agree with all of your analysis and think that overall it was self-serving for JT and did not make him look good or sincere at all.
@Mrs_Mama_MFTАй бұрын
The entire focus is to downplay the severity of the situation. He had to look like he was taking responsibility for his mistake, but a more dramatic apology would make it seem like what he did was more shameful, which is the opposite of the message they are trying to convey.
@qs2668Ай бұрын
Spidey, along with the expression of contempt there's also the eyebrow raise and nodding, which is emphasis upon emphasis. My read on it is that the contempt was an in-character expression. Hear me out: In this moment, he is performing the role of someone who has done something bad and learnt his lesson and some of the mannerisms come naturally while in character (meaning he doesn't have to actively think "now I need to show contempt"). This is not to say that he does or does not regret it or has or has not learnt his lesson. Maybe he truly has but would typically not talk about it to the press, so therefore he's portraying a character who DOES want to get his regret across. What do you think? Am I off with this conjecture?
@TheBehavioralArtsАй бұрын
That’s really interesting. So what you’re saying is the gesture isn’t necessarily how he feels but how his character feels? Like he’s brought himself to a point of trying to sell this to a point where contempt came out? It’s a great thought. My take on that is that we’re all constantly playing characters at all times, and behavioral analysis tries to see what is happening behind that social mask. So even if he is playing a character if he got to a point where he actually felt contemptuous towards his actions. I don’t know if it’s necessarily a bad thing. Whatever gets him there is fine by me 😂
@qs2668Ай бұрын
@@TheBehavioralArts I agree. It felt to me that he really wanted us to see and pay attention to his disapproval (contempt) towards his actions (with the simultaneous eyebrow raise and head nod), and showcasing the disapproval is crucial to fulfilling the role that he is currently performing. This doesn't mean that any of it has to be disingenuous though, it's just that what we're seeing is performance mode (in my opinion).

I love that "unique nature" comment... I really think that both Justin and the lawyer think this is ridiculous and the comment is a little joke between them about small town thinking and how they are making a huge deal out of nothing. You can even see the little smirk in the face of the lawyer after the quick eye contact. Just my thoughts 😉😉
@Uilani-g4mАй бұрын
The lawyer is being a lawyer. Talking in bubbles. What does Justine's "nice" attitude having anything to do with the charge? And why does it matter if the cops were nice also? Lawyers are so good at avoiding the problem they are defended. They should really be called excuse makers
