My father had PTSD from the service and had severe mental struggles. He shot himself august 15. Before hand I sold my house to stay with my father to make sure that it didn’t happen. Every morning at 3:30 on the dot my father played this 4 times in a row. He found peace within the melody and lyrics. I will always remember and cherish my father by this song. He was looking for something he couldn’t have, and that was peace. Love you pops

I am so sorry for the loss of your dad and for what he lost before he couldn't take no more. I tell you sometimes I read things like this and I wonder...but what you wrote about him being in the service and listening to the lyrics of this song...well it rings true. My brother was in Vietnam. He just died this pass July but he was quiet kept to himself for the rest of his life after he got home. I hope you do not blame yourself. Do not if you do. If he did listen to this song everyday "on the dot" like you said and 4 times in a row...well he was getting ready. Or letting you know something. Now they call it Post traumatic stress disorder...back in the day it was just Shell Shock. Personally I think that describes it better. I hope you are doing well. An...I hope you're not messing with my emotions. Whichever...he wanted better for you. Each parent does...so make each day better. Start it at 3:30 every morning and enjoy some part of each day. Impossible to have great days everyday..but make something great.

The rhythm, the lyrics, the choir, the harmony, the meaning of it in my and my sons lives... it makes me cry and happy at the same time every single time. Tnx a lot Justin & Chris! Thank you for this song. My Dad was diagnosed with ALS in January and before that we hadn't really been friends or talked at all for 15 years and so I moved in with my dad 3 weeks before he died. In those 3 weeks we listened to music together like the old days but I recently started playing guitar and when I learned this song and played it for him while he was watching it on youtube one night and that was the first time I'd seen my father cry. We listened to this song on repeat every night or as many times as he wanted too. I can't thank yiu enough because without this song I feel like my dad would've let go sooner. His wife at the time was treating him like shit, getting mad at him for not making her scrambled eggs when he can't stand on his own. My dad was always just ready I felt like but when it was just me and him with my guitar and this song on, all of his problems went away. I ended up receiving a call from my dad's wife so I rushed in the garage and he was laying on the ground with no pulse then I started to give him cpr and kind of brought him back. He started exhaling and inhaling every 15-20 seconds. And I gave him cpr for 10 minutes then helped the paramedics move him. You guys just are a huge part of my life now and thank you for everything 🤘 Dad as I'm listening to this 6 months after. I fucking miss you. I was blessed to be the only one to be right by your side at the end and to save you so you could get to the hospital so everyone could see you. We had so many songs together but this one dad, this one means so much too me. Every single time you'd ask me if I'm on my way and then when I'd come walking in with my guitar you'd be there all ready listening to this. I'd sit down start playing and then we'd sing together. Dad you were right. You were looming for something you can't have which was happiness so sometimes the greatest way to say something is to say nothing at all. Don't fight back, don't yell, you'd just look at me and with your eyes say it's all okay bud. I miss you and I love you Dad. I can't wait to see you again

It looks like the entire video was shot live: Live vocals, live instruments, live music, and all of it in one continuous shot. Everyone involved in this production: the musicians, the performers, the videographers, sound engineers, lighting specialist and ect; all these individuals are extremely talented. But what takes my breath away is the insane amount of practice that must have went into to the creation of this video. It's nice to see talented people perform. However, this is a group of people that has honed their skills and have thereby acquired something beyond natural talent. In my opinion that is truly next level!
@RothWelles7 жыл бұрын
one-take video. And live performance, yes. They've probably never had to manage such a team (2 singers, 17 musicians, 60 choristers, plus tech team), but La Blogotheque has been involved in tens of live-recordings for more than 10 years. We've got some parts of behind the scene here (en.blogotheque.net/2018/01/25/justin-timberlake-chris-stapleton-say-something/ ) but i'm curious to know who chose the place. Indeed, the elevator thing somehow refers to what was done 10 years ago, early march 2007, when filming Arcade Fire in the elevator at L'Olympia.. At this level btw, this is closer to real cinema than simple video.It smells Malick, Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro, Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki

Bruce Wilson II This video indeed was one take. Check out the end slate timecode for more info. Planned and carefully prepped for days as it was, nobody actually expected a "lightning in a bottle" first take. After that first amazing take, they also did a perfect second take as insurance, which was virtually identical and used for the original official music video published in 2018. They chose this December 9, 2017 5:13 PM take two for publishing simply because, well, why not? Perhaps it had arguably a slightly better live audio mix. You can even hear JT at the end say "that was the shit!" in his excitement that the second take was perfect as well, and the ensuing ovation at the end by everybody, so honest and amazing, that's a wrap! Everyone knew "lightning in a bottle" had just happened, not once but twice, which is astonishingly rare! This just never happens in filming. On the anniversary of its release, they went ahead and published the actual very first perfect take done at 4:28 PM which I actually prefer for various tiny cinematic reasons unimportant to 99.9% of viewers. I did camera for Fame and Shake it Up! both musical and choreography TV shows. I can never remember a "lightning in a bottle" take. When I first saw this in 2018 my mind exploded and I thought steadicam operator Ari Robbins must be a "God": such perfect musical timing and perfect operating through multiple space vectors - perfection, twice! And aligned with all the great musicians! Chills!

I'm a professional filmmaker, and whoever that steadicam operator and 1st assistant camera person are, congrats. My mind is blown. And the slate at the end said that was the first take? Outrageous. That's such a hard video to shoot. Keeping every shot in focus, in low light, while moving around like that, without cutting, is criminal. I cried me a river at the end.
First and ONLY take, with only a 10 minute window of correct lighting through the skylight. All audio recorded live wirelessly in a steel building. Absolutely mind bending.

watching this again on the 3rd of May 2024. So many impressive, technical moves by the camera operator! at 2:52 for example, this looks like around 200mm-400mm+ (maybe longer) telephoto-lateral-movement (straffing) - steadicam shot kept perfectly level and smooth. Very impressive!

WOW! One continuous shot. LIVE Singing! Impressive and well done JT, Chris Stapleton, and the chorus!
@PtylerBeats6 жыл бұрын
Blake Daniels-Britton this song was not recorded in one take 😂 the music video was shot in a continuous shot. That doesn’t mean: 1) The vocals were recorded in one take. They were not. Not even a little. 2) The video was recorded in one take. It MOST LIKELY was not. A continuous shot doesn’t mean they recorded it on their first try. That could have been their 50th take. We have no way of knowing.
@BlakeBritton6 жыл бұрын
Ptyler I never said it didn't take some practice runs... However, the fact that it is a single continuous shot and that they are wearing ear pieces and microphones and you can hear a non studio recorded voice in it... It was recording their voices. You could have had a backing track, but I highly doubt it unless it was for their reference only.

People are complaining that its repetitive and I think that's the point. If you listen to the cadence in JT's first verse he is conveying that the voices around him keep pressuring him to "say something, say something" louder and louder. As much as he feels compel to obey, he refrains from getting caught up in the compulsion that OTHER people have to give their OPINIONS when it is not necessary or helpful. Sometimes the best thing is to say nothing at all..so he doesn't crowd the song with unnecessary lyrics (talk). And guess what the space he gives the music makes the listener get caught up in the beautiful MUSIC and not HIM per se. I love it.

Wordily pleasures for the ears and for the eyes: music, movies, sport. That kind of entertainment is given by lucifer to mankind, to keep them busy doing and knowing nothing, When human dies, he or she is surprised that he or she keeps existing. Yet the only reason for it is, they had their lifetime on earth catching delusions and illusions. Never loved the truth, never cared for it and as some used to say: 1st comes laughter, then turning of the head, then closing of the ears, freezing of the heart, then life in struggle and then regrets and cries. The last 2 shall be there forever. = the life of a ignorant fools. Creating “perfect” offspring who`s genetic DNA is mixed: human + animal + angel + inverting every soul + posses them with evil spirits = perfect spell casting, look at the public, they all sing and dance along not sensing reality. The tares and the wheat - a story in the bible. 2 different offspring, growing together, shoulder next to shoulder. The "rituals" haven`t stopped happening, these got renamed to fit the timelines: in our days, the rituals are: music concerts showing off the masonic hand sighs and symbols becoming "trans" few more.

@La That's not always a bad thing; It's a simple message, but so few people seem capable of learning that it needs to be repeated time and again. Just because a comment is out there, you don't have to respond. Think about it, measure your words and if speaking out is just going to kick the ball further along, then perhaps it's best to just walk away without saying a word.

Everyone knows all about my direction And in my heart somewhere I wanna go there Still I don't go there Everybody says "say something" Say something, say something Then say something, say something, then say something I don't wanna get caught up in the rhythm of it But I can't help myself, no, I can't help myself, no, no Caught up in the middle of it No I can't help myself, no I can't help myself, no, no, no Caught up in the rhythm of it Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have Everyone knows all about my transgressions Still in my heart somewhere, there's melody and harmony For you and me, tonight (whoa) I hear them call my name Everybody says "say something" Then say something, say something Then say something, say something then say something I don't want to get caught up in the rhythm of it But I can't get help myself, no I can't help myself, no, no Caught up in the middle of it No I can't help myself, no I can't help myself, no, no, no Caught up in the rhythm of it Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Sometimes the greatest the way to say something is to say nothing at all Sometimes the greatest the way to say something is to say nothing at all Sometimes the greatest the way to say something is to say nothing But I can't help myself, no I can't help myself, no, no Caught up in the middle of it No I can't help myself, no I can't help myself, no, no, no Caught up in the rhythm of it Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Maybe I'm looking something that I can't have (maybe I'm looking something that I can't have) Sometimes the greatest the way to say something is to say nothing at all Sometimes the greatest the way to say something is to say nothing at all Sometimes the greatest the way to say something is to say nothing

the truth I hate to tell you, but that "exposure" was choreographed into the performance. Both Justin and Janet knew it was going to happen. Your hate isn't welcome here.

I agree. He should have also sung, "Where is the Love?" with the Black Eyed Peas.

I have to listen to this again every 6 months or so just to remember how awesome it is. Justin has talent, no doubt. Stapleton was the surprise. His voice is like warm Tennessee whiskey. Great collaboration. Hope to see more.
