Before he left this world, he changed my musical tastes forever. What a songwriting legend....

This breaks my heart. Had the pleasure of meeting JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE after he did a concert in Florida about three years ago after the show. He was followed into my favorite tavern by about twenty fans seeking autographs. He very kindly and patiently signed them all and then sidled up to the bar by my side to order a drink. I asked him what he did to earn that kind of attention and he all too modestly replied: "Oh, just sing some songs is all." OMG. What an understatement that was. I bought him a drink and we had a smoke while we drank and talked for nearly an hour and he was so interesting and down-to-earth. It was an honor getting to spend some time with such an immensely talented young man. Sometimes lying right on the cusp of greatness is the darkest abyss. RIP JTE.

Yup him and Steve had a weird relationship for a while there. We are like 4th cousins but Justin and I are the same age so we hung out the few times he would come back to Earles chapel for reunions . Im going to his birthday celebration in Nashville in January. It's weird I didn't know how good at writing he was. Such a sad deal. He is named after Townes van Zandt and Steve Earles son .

And there he stood. Six foot Five, thin and covered in tattoos, swaying from side to side. Wearing a vintage suit and Buddy Holly's glasses. Beating that parlor guitar up, heaving his breath as he sneered every word, singing something about the Harlem River Blues. He was so much like a preacher, and so fucking cool. And he's a better writer than his father. You know, you forget he's his daddy's son when he sings about having his Mama's eyes. Love you, JT
