Mr. Barker, thank you for your service and i apologize for our screwed up goverment that let a veteran be homeless in the first place. I just found out a few weeks ago that of all people my old battle buddy from basic is actually homeless right now. I have done everything i can as far as money goes and rents him rooms to sleep in as often as i can but having 3 kids and 2 step kids myself i can't do as much as i want ya know. So I've actually started trying to find vans for sale to let him use it and that way he has a roof over his head and a way to get to work when he find a job... but anyways didn't mean to write a book here lol.. but i am extremely happy you are off the street and have a roof..

*Everyone* should do a kind of local rehearsal; don't feel bad- it's the smart thing to do. While still close to home, you can pretend to do all the steps you plan to take on the road, and when you realize you left something behind, you can just make a list, and get it. Walmarts are a good source of free camping, so long as you touch base with the manager. And stay NOWHERE more than one day. Just a smart tactic. Nice forward blinds! I wish I had something like that, when I was on the road...I made a big black-and-white thing that bounced light back in on me, and kept the outside looking like shadows. It worked great, but didn't give the openness yours affords.

Btw, when parking at a walmart I prefer being right next to the light poles. Preferably next to a curb at the side of the lot or maybe an island/curb elsewhere in the lot. I feel it reduces the chance of someone accidentally running into you as they cut through the lot, etc, at night. I'm not sure if that is truly the case, but it seems a little logical at least.
@KandiKlover
@KandiKlover 5 жыл бұрын
It's not the case but it does keep too many people parking next to you so you don't keep waking up to people talking and slamming the doors. The back or one of the more secluded edges of the lot is the place to be going.

@101perspective
@101perspective 2 жыл бұрын
@@Baka_Oppai True. I've started doing that a lot more often. In the past I preferred the larger Walmarts because they stayed open 24/7 and had security watching the parking lots the whole time. Since covid, most don't stay open full time anymore. They still work in a pinch though if no other places are available in the area.

Be prepared for the naysayers on your videos. There will be people that seem to have nothing better to do but run people down that are trying to live their life on the road like you are doing. I myself think that you are blessed to be able to be doing what you are doing. The only person that you have to please is yourself. Take care & God bless.

1) if you are in a walmart plaza (like a strip mall or other stores in one huge lot), be very careful that you are in the walmart perimeter. You may think you are in their parking spots but could be in the plaza spots and will get a ticket. 2) park directly under the light stand. This gives you more security in that others can see your van there but the light doesn't come into the side windows as easily. I noticed that some stores in canada that close at 11pm, that some of the parking lot lights are turned off and makes it a nicer sleep. 3) bought walmart towels for curtains and run a stiff wire threw to hold in place. 4) rotisserie chicken / salad / fresh bread are there at most walmarts and a better choice for dinner. if walmart only had free wifi and pay as you go showers.

Wow that's a nice prebuilt. The curtain setup and swively seats is perfect. Blocks better than most home made setups and allows full use of the front area as well. I wish I had one like this to live in, that seat you were sitting in for breakfast looks comfy and the table would be perfect to set the laptop on for gaming all night.

Lucky you, not the Wal-Mart here on Vancouver Island BC Canada. They put up big signs saying no overnight parking or camping this year. it became a problem when big RV's and 5th wheel trailers made it look like an rv park. Same thing with the Super store down the road. To bad because I was thinking of doing it because the rents are to high and the vacancies are to low. I am not sure about the rest of Canada but living on parking lots here is now a no go, and they warn you will be towed at your expense. Think about that when you leave your rig for what ever. As for bright lights, black out blinds do the trick. i did the same back in 1997 so I know how it is..

2 things I'd like to suggest. Noise canceling headset which takes outside noises and converts it to white noise in your ear. And instead of taking up so much space in your van with beds or benches that convert to a bed that are often not very comfortable anyway why not get a zero clearance wall huger very well padded recliner that lays down nearly flat and use it as your primary bed. The space saved can be uses for any number of other built in conveniences.

My recommendation for anyone concerned about the noises and it being too quiet and hearing everything around you is to get a battery powered White Noise generator. It won't drown out all the sound but will help. Also ear plugs along with this would probably work pretty good.

Also, you might want to make a blackout curtain that goes behind the front seats, from side to side. If you need to make a getaway you don't want to fiddle with curtains! It is hard enough to have a pet in a traditional home. It seems like people who live in vehicles with pets dedicate an enormous amount of time to caring for them. RV's get hot and cold so fast that you have to be super vigilant because conditions can get unsafe very fast when the pet is left alone.

I used to have a Standard Poodle for 9+ years that went almost everywhere with me because I was self-employed and lived in an uninsulated beach house (efin HOT!) When I do the wall mart camping, or city camping, I leave my cab area clean and draw the curtain behind the front seats. It makes the van look less likely to be lived in. Curtains across the windshield are a dead give away. Just a tip from a long time stealth camper.

Here's a simple solution. I figured this out when I went to 3rd shift and have to sleep during the day, and the light was keeping me from sleeping well. I use a black sleep mask. Ebay and Amazon has them for around 5 or 6 USD. You can also try a bandanna over your eyes, but with that, the knot in the back can get annoying. As far as security, as long as people can't see in, you should be all right.

Justin, the music is a bad idea. Sleeping in Walmart though..I've done it in an RV. Many Walmarts are different. I always try to park as far from the store as possible because customers park as close as they can and are in and out all night. Some Walmarts have trees either in the parking lot or on the edge and I try to park under or near them. At one Walmart I stayed and noticed a security guard. I stayed a second night and he came by and told me I could only stay one night. He was nice, and let me stay that night, but I moved on after that.

Walmart closes at 11 p.m. now and night time employees stock shelves. The parking lots now turn into a meeting place for kids that like to race their cars. The latest thing is cars that can back-fire after racing the engine. This has happened to me at two Walmarts at two individual states that I stayed with in my Roadtrek camper van. They kept the noise going until 4 a.m.! Could not sleep. No police showed up and one Walmart had a convelescent home across the street!

Just stumbled on this vid. So a little late maybe? But I would just wear a sleeping mask. Use the existing curtains for privacy and the mask to block out light. Cheaper, easier, and temporary adequate fix. I worked nights for years. So many of the guys I worked with blacked out their bed room windows. My wife had so many plants in our bedroom, that I tried the mask rather than fighting the plant battle. Worked for me no problem. Add a fan or some white noise machine to mask those outside sounds and sleep like a baby.

I think it would be better for you to start making your own food instead of eating crappy take out. It will be a much easier on your budget and you could go further on your trips if you didn't spend your money on fast food. Just a thought.

From a vanner for YEARS, first off, your van is a dead giveaway. One look at that rig and anyone would say "CAMPER- SOMEONE ASLEEP INSIDE". What you do is keep your truck as incognito as possible. No fancy windows, no curtains, no AC units, (exposed) and keep your living quarters from being seen thru the front windshield. In other words, keep it looking like someone has just parked there to go into the store, not pulled in to camp for the night.

Watch out! Some of the Wal-Marts don't allow overnight RV/Truck parking, so you may have to make other arrangements sometimes...

If it were ok there would be others, usually including the step vans, school busses, and the rest of it that ruins it for those of us who actually travel. Always go ask the manager if it's ok to overnight.

I've found that Walmarts are FAR from being the same when it comes to boon docking. There have been a few that I've gone to that I didn't feel safe driving through let alone parking overnight. These are usually in the big cities near poor neighborhoods. Though, I remember one small city where I got a bad vibe. I think it was because the city seemed too small. Like it might be a place where people would go mess with boon dockers just to have something to do.
