Years ago I ended up living out of my Hyundai Tucson with 3 cats, cages, the whole nine yards. I stayed at night at a truck stop, so my schedule was based on the trucker's arrival as I had to squeeze in-between them for the night. I spent some cold nights, no reflectives, jackery, nada. Yeah I froze my toucas off. lol. I would spend the day at the library charging my phone, laptop, while job hunting. I totally relate to what you are saying. No judgement here pal, you do what you have to do. You could say I was doing hard core micro mini rv'ing in my car. I had it all rigged out, so for my budget, I managed. Could I do it again? I can, I would prefer to do this in a van, more room for sure. I think you learn what you can deal with, do without, still be happy. Love your channel.

For health and power reasons, I'd only use an electric blanket to knock the chill off a cold bed, maybe 30 minutes before I hop in. But out of the wind as you are, you really should be able to stack on enough bedding (comforters!) to stay warm in bed. Make a little cave over your head, sort of like a snorkel hood that was all the rage in the '70s. Anyway, that's what I've always done, down to -30F. But I was always willing and able to bring a big synthetic-filled SlumberJack 0-degree bag, plus a couple comforters. It is bulkier than an electric blanket. I just don't like wrapping or covering myself with a giant electric resistor, laid out like a grid right next to my flesh. I don't want to risk getting cold, because the power goes out.

My son served in Afghanistan in 2010 in a mountainous area, below zero temperatures. I sent him boxes of Hot Hands in several sizes. I asked local hunters before buying Hot Hands and they confirmed before I sent them. They camped out a lot, no fires allowed so they didn’t attract enemy gun fire. Their Marine Corps sleeping bags were not enough or even close. For Christmas, I sent him a gift in late October of a Special Forces sleeping bag ($300+). It looked exactly like his Marine Corps issued sleeping bag so he hid the Marine Corps bag and used the one I sent. It allowed him to use the Hot Hands during the day. Hot Hands definitely work.

Just a tip from my Army days. They taught us that you actually stay warmer in your sleeping bag if you DON'T dress for the outdoors, because your body heat warms up the bag and is reflected back. Thermal underwear as PJ's is what we used when tent camping as a child too. An old-fashioned Hot Waterbottle is awesome, too. One at your feet, and (4 me) one at the small of my back.

Add a wool blanket and some mylar emergency blankets. Shroud the interior using the mylar, it reflects heat back to you. Use the wool to insulate you in the bag. My wife and I survived 13 degree below zero with heavy winds at North Rim of Grand Canyon. We had a army sleep system, she used the heavy bag, me with the patrol bag, 2 poncho liners and 3 mylar blankets. I kept the truck running all night, windows slightly cracked for ventilation. She slept great, I was dozing on and off all night to monitor the truck and heater. It was cold but we survived. The reflectives insulation works great! All the air leaks in a vehicle are hard to plug. We used newspaper and paper towels to plug up gaps at the doors.

You could place a nice wool blanket (a xl twin size might work) over your sleeping bag and put pillows (maybe one of those body pillows) between you and the car (insulation). Don’t forget underneath you maybe another mat or thick blanket. I live in Texas and a couple of winters ago we lost power for days. I layered everyone with blankets and pillows to keep heat in, had a few wool blankets and that topped it off. Now we have an ice storm emergency kit and it’s full of hot hands.

I've been living in my car full time for over five years, and I love it. I never use any form of heating in winter❄️, even though I spend a great deal of time parked up in the high mountains during severe weather conditions. I simply use high quality expedition clothing: mainly made of goose down. My Jacket, pants and boots are all 800-fill goose down. I prefer to sleep naked most of the time, or at the most a thin base-layer shirt, and find that the goose down sleeping bag is more than enough warmth (often too warm🥵). This lays on top of a goose down airbed.(I have three different sleeping bags: duck down for spring/summer/autumn. Goose down -20 for winter; and a minus -40C bag for severe low temperatures, or when I sleep in the mountains with no car or tent). Throughout the year I leave all four windows slightly open day & night, regardless of weather conditions. This provides a free flow of fresh air and also prevents moisture build up and avoids damp causing mold. During warmer months I keep the winter gear and clothing in dry storage. By the way, I also don't use insulation over the windows or windscreen. I much prefer natural light and dark. Although my rear windows do have dark tinted glass.

I use it to pre heat my sleeping bag and then turn it off because it does draw a fair bit of power. I then can turn it back on in the night for a little top up of heat. This worked for me in minus 47 Celsius in my wrangler. Keep doing what you are doing 🤙

Relapses are with everything, dieting, exercising, anger management, parenting, faithfulness, cursing, relationships etc. We all stop and start over with all kinds of things in life. As a mom with a son working through sobriety, there really is no words that can express how proud and thankful to see his life, like yours completely changed❤

I do outpatient hospice nursing, so out in my car all day for work, much like you. In the winter, it seems like no matter what I do, my feet are freezing. One of the VERY few complaints I have about my Outback is the heater on the foot setting just doesn't really hit your feet, just your legs. These days rocking a pair of Bogs, double wool socks, and my feet STILL get cold. It's nuts.

❤please pudge blanket from wool, put it over your sleeping bag when it’s very cold. Use a camping underlay under your mattress, it will isolate the cold from your body.❤

Idk how ya’ll do it. I wouldn’t have the mental fortitude to go through something like this, even if I was well prepared. I can handle the heat much better than the cold I’m actually even more sensitive to cold since I’m a pre diabetic! God bless you man I hope things get better for you someday 🙏🏽🙏🏽 Finally even in the extreme cold you actually still gotta stay hydrated you can easily get dehydrated and you don’t even notice it because it’s so cold 🥶 I’ve gotten muscle cramps before in really cold weather turns out I was just super dehydrated so it’s definitely something to keep an eye on!

Don't go a knockin' if the car be rockin' Have you ever considered an electric blanket? I'm not a car or van lifer, yet. But I've heard that many of them use an electric blanket to help. I don't think they take a lot of juice. Great point about waste/use! Thanks for providing great content! Be well.

Hey, I get that question a lot. It would use up too much juice for my little power station, and honestly I don’t need one. Thanks for watching

Saw some kind of commercial showing one that uses small batteries tucked in a small corner it... might be useful

Have you tried a heated car blanket that plugs into your lighter or jackery. It prewarms your sleeping bag and turns off after a couple hrs. Then you can turn it back on again if you need it....doesnt take much of your battery.

I know this sounds weird but I love seeing what my birth state looks like. I’m a Cali girl but born in the ocean state. Binge watching your channel. Impressed with your sub count. Mine is too low.

I’m sitting here in Oregon thinking the same thing, watching my home state from afar. I was born and raised in Westerly.

Really enjoying your content...Such a nice way for me to wind down in the evening. One suggestion for a nice breakfast or a light dinner instead of oatmeal, I think you can still get it in the States...You have to try Malt-O-Meal or Cream of Wheat. Same kind of cooking with milk but you add brown sugar and salted butter to taste...trust me.

Hi Bren. I'm enjoying your channel. I live in the Boston area and have slept in my Outback a few times at 30° outside. The night you made this video, I think you can only count the frigid 9 below, not the wind chill factor, because you don't have wind INSIDE the vehicle. Anyway I have a couple of questions. Do you normally crack a couple of windows an inch or so for ventilation? And how do you deal with condensation on the inside of the windows in the morning? When you made this video, it was probably frozen condensation. I use reflectix similarly in most of my windows but I'm usually dealing with condensation in the morning.

I lived in my car for 11 months but that time i used to live in Cali. Didn’t have to deal with cold weather. What a great memories. Definitely my biggest personal freedom 10 out of 10 in life. Now thinking about doing it again but in Colorado. Amazing Bren ! thank you for everything you share with us and for us.

If you fill two large soda bottles with boiling water and put them in the bottom of a sleeping bag It will stay warm most of the night and your feet would be happy not to mention the heat warms everything. I did it in the snow in a tent at -3 degrees and slept like a baby
