I used to have one of these. I am always on the lookout for another one. Loved that bike.

Great job Dustin! a very thorough restoration and build, these late 80's lightweight Schwinn road bikes were pretty sweet, the lineup for 1988 featured a handful of really nice models to choose from all comparable with the best models of the 70's like the Superior, Sports Tourer and World Voyageur. Keep up the great work and thanks for your contribution to the preservation of these vintage beauties 👍👍🔧🔧🔥🔥

I used to own a 88 Schwinn Premis. Purple Color. It was assembled with Shimano 105 Groupo with indexed shifters. The Columbus Tenax tubing was either Columbus SL tubing that had cosmetic blemishes and was sold under the Tenax label. It was an excellent entry level road/racing bike for the era but weighed about 21 or 22 lbs. its handling and tracking was very good. I ended up giving it to my cousin 5 years later when I bought a Schwinn Paramount. I think he still has it but last time I visited it was pretty badly rusted from sitting in his garage for years.

I have noticed that every Bike I buy from the Marketplace that has caked up Grease, Lube, Dirt are usually in better condition that other bikes. I call them "Mummies" since it seems some of that gunk is acting as a protectant.. lol

When assembling a stem to handlebars I remove the bolt from the handlebar stem clamping area and tap a tapered wooden shim in the gap to spread it slightly. That way it will slide on. I don't wiggle it on and scratch the handlebars.

I got an 89 Circuit with white Santé hoods that were spent. Dirty and sticky. I found some white aero 105 hoods for like $5 and they fit just fine!

Nice, I have a old Vitus 979 with Mavic Drive Train and Campy Chorus Cranks, complete with Scott DH Bars, J-Disc rear wheel, and Tri-spoke front wheel from the 1980s sitting in my Garage that I need to restore.

I have this same bike in purple. All original, except for the tires, and I think the freewheel has tighter gearing. The hoods are gone - turned to goo. Not sure if it's worth replacing them. And I think the headset is indexed. Maybe that can be fixed. It's pretty clean, but some scrapes in the paint. After viewing your video, I'd like to see about restoring it - maybe along with the Tempo i also have.

Yeah that's awesome! That purple is a great color too. I think at the time I said I liked the all white more, but now I'm 50/50. Good luck finding replacement hoods; that should have the black ones IIRC which were easier to find on ebay. There were a lot of non-aero white hoods (cables coming out the top) but aero white was impossble to find. I think I found one pair for like $75 or something. But yeah overall I fully support a resto! Have fun

Really turned out well! Agreed that these '80s bikes really have a lot going for them, and a good refurbishing reveals this. Question ... was that metal polish that brightened up the handlebars? I didn't know if that would work on anodize finishes.
@JustinDoesTriathlon Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Agreed. I'm 95% sure that was "Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish." (I say 95% because now it's a white goo in an unlabelled jar mystery chemical, but I think that's what it's from. 🤣) I use Flitz chrome polish for chrome but it doesn't do much for bare alu. That mag polish works *great* on alum. Highly reccomend.

Thats a really good idea to use automotive wheel polish. I have heard that standard metal polish would dull an anodize coating, but auto products would be made for anodized finishes. Thanks@@JustinDoesTriathlon

Totally! I rarely use bike specific products. A lot of things from the car world just work better

Do you what spindle length you sied for the bottom bracket? Im restoring a schwinn premis exactly like this one. thanks for the inspo

I believe it is either 115 or 118mm based on internet searches, but I can't find any old Schwinn specs to confirm
