Dabke is usually formed in line a of both men and women. Women can lead too. The reason why you don’t see it as often is most likely because dabke is done at weddings or celebrations were women are wearing dresses and heels making it harder for them to do the dance. However, in my experience at weddings with my family, women often lead the dabke.

To answer your questions, the towel/cane is a prop that some use signifying leading the line and also in order as to not leave their hands open . The drums are brought to the event by whoever is hired to DJ. Lastly, women leading the Dabke dance is nothing new, it’s culture only. Hello I'm not from Lebanon (I'm Moroccan) but here's what I know... This dance is thousands of years old. it is danced in the Levant ( Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan) and it is derived from the way man used to celebrate victory in wars ( alot of dances in middle east derived from that)... that is why it is popular among man, woman also dance it. Dabke is a levantine dance, its a tribal dance that used to be danced after war victories, later on it became the norm to be danced during weddings, There are multiple types of it such as mejwez, dalo'ona and tayara and many others which might be specific to each region of the levant on its ow that symbolizes their tribe.

Oh to be young again. In the 70s before the revolution in Iran, we had military students from Iran that would train at our base here in Mississippi. Once a year at their new year celebration, usually in March they would have a big party. It was the best time of my life because the men would dance and we would watch. I love the traditions from other countries especially the Middle East, they sure know how to party, and without alcohol so they are on a natural high just having fun and making great memories. I miss that so much.

Dabkeh is traditional dance for Palestine , jordan, Lebanon and Syria. And it can be performed in celebration or night clubs or even at home. Its for both men and women. There's some light moves if someone doesn't know much about the dance or if the ladies are wearing heels or dresses. It's not about food, it's about doing it for long enough just like working out for long makes you fit. Luv u ♥️

This is not Arab culture. Dabke comes from the Thracian culture, ancestors of the Phoenicians. You can find the same type of dance in the balkans too, in different styles.

Lebanese are not Arabs..."Arab" culture is only the culture of the Arabian peninsula. That's it. They don't have Dabke, they don't have our food, and they don't have our history or genetics. The only thing they have that we do is the same language and for a lot in Lebanon, the same faith, but my family is Christian and they spoke Aramaic so at the end of the day, we are NOT Arab. This type of dancing is regional. I'm Greek Orthodox (not Greek.. I'm a convert), but this is very familiar, lol. If you ever get invited to a Greek wedding.. go. The food and fun are something you'll never forget. Obviously, the dancing isn't always the impressive, but I've seen some killer dancers in my day.

Also got the vibe that the leader was like an orchestra conductor - but their orchestra was the other dancers. Definitely felt like they were controlling the "pace". Very cool.

The leader isn't a conductor or anything like that. It's usually one of the better dancers at the wedding and one who is brave enough to be the leader of the line. You have to be on your game to be the leader as you set the pace for the rest of the dancers. But yes, the leader of the line has some kind of prop usually but not all the time. Handkerchief or cane typically. And it's pronounced (dahb-ka)...the ka is more like the "ka" from "okay" and it slightly sounds like que in Spanish.

I just discovered the name of this dance and looked up its origins...apparently it comes from when people would make houses out of mud...in the winter the roof would crack, so the men would go up on the roof to fix it...part of fixing it was stomping your feet, the neighbor men would come and they would all grab hands...furthermore they would sing to keep warm...so it seems that becoming a traditional dance was the next logical step...love this video

i'm lebanese basically there is no difference in men and women in this dance, the better you are the closer you are to the front, if you are confident enough in your moves you can become the leader. men are seen more in the lead in this dance because it requires ALOT of leg and core strength, which is more commonly found in men than women, but we don't discriminate, if you are good you can go to the front

The one at the end is the leader and always hold something in his hand to guide the line, and the one next to him is the supporter and he must be strong to support the leader balance. Dabke is performed by men and women either together or separate.

It is pronounced like "dub key". It is very usual to have this line dance going on at weddings and other celebrations for Lebanese. If you go to a Maronite Catholic Church, you can participate in this dance at their festivals.

Anyways i feel the need to answer about some points: 1- it’s not only Lebanese it’s a Levantine dance especially the style in the videos ( Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine ) and there r different versions in ( Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the gulf region in general) but they might not call it dabke! 2- there are also similar collective dances in Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iran, Armenia Georgia ) 3- in this version the first guy is the leader and the free styler , the second man is the supporter of the first man and he also passes the rhythm to the rest of the chain! The more far u r from the first man the simpler ur move gonna be or u can start ur own chain! Sometimes in big gatherings u can find a chain inside a chain inside a chain 4- the women absence here is because these are weddings ( high heels , dresses) and these guy wonna show off so they gonna do some aggressive risky moves that aren’t easy for the women party dress code! But u always can find exceptions ! Also some cultures don’t mix a lot in the dance and that is another reason too 5- the tissue , cane, sword, beads in the hand of the first guy is a symbol of leading the chain plus to keep his free hand occupied so the neuromuscular organization is much easier! Sometimes when he doesn’t ’t have something in his hands he simply keeps it behind his head so it doesn’t bother him ( u can’t understand this point until u try dancing 😉) Sorry for the elongated comment and hope it’s a help! And i think u already got it right because u guys were smart trying to figure out the new things u experienced ! 👍🏻 keep it up!

to answer the gender question, dabke is gender-neutral, there are no set "roles" for men or women legend says that back when ceilings were made of things like mud and others, they needed to be flattened and pressed down every once and a while as to not fall apart. so the whole town would get together and dance dabke, which in a way translates to "stomping of feet", and they added music to it et voila you now have dabke

Actually, debke is a dance for everyone for men and woman, in the history before women were dancing this more beside men, but that because they were more strong and they were more interested in this dance these days they are less dancing because less women want to, but no one is stopping them from dancing. Dabke is a women and men dance since back in the days(you could see a lot of Lebanese old theatre or even older as they would always mix the dance. The Karakala group is a famous Lebanese dabke group of all time). It is originated from Baalback the city of the sun when this man wanted to impress a gril he loved with dance moves and from there this dance started to go wider across lebanon where you have different types of dabke based on area in lebanon and different moves for men and women. Other Arabian countries also adapted the idea from Lebanon and created their own versions of it. Usually the stick, tissues and rosemaries be held by the main lead of Dabke also you would move based on the beats whilst moving. Usually you would switch with the one on the side when you feel tired or so lol but yeah it is just to also give others the chance to dance as well.
