I'm white and grew up drinking Kool-Aid. I had no idea that it was a stereotype until I was in my 20's. I was at potluck dinner and a friend of mine had invited one of his friends. His friend was black. Almost everyone else there was white. He got there and saw all these pitchers of Kool-Aid and he goes, wait, white people drink Kool-Aid too? hahahahahaha We all have so much more in common in this world than we think. This is just one example.
@sam12six4 жыл бұрын
Y'know, I grew up in a way country part of Georgia around dirt poor people. All those foods that are "black people" food? Yeah, they're just what really poor people in the south would eat. You could raise chickens in your yard. Kool aid was a drink with flavor that cost like a quarter a gallon. Cornbread - again, enough for a family meal cost just a few cents. I didn't realize these were considered black stereotype foods until I was in college. A guy in line behind me at a cookout at a frat was looking at this black guy in the front of the line and he was like, "I'll bet he's going to ask for fried chicken." Me: Um, what? Him: You know, chicken? Me: Um, what? Him: 'Cause he's black? Me:Um, what? He spent a couple of minutes explaining that black people love fried chicken and I didn't get it then and don't get it now. Every time I order Chinese food there's a damned piece of fried chicken in it. Every time I go to KFC, there's tons of whatever flavor people live in that area in the restaurant. As far as I can tell, pretty much everyone who has access to chickens eats chickens.

What’s funny is that kool-aid was huge back when I was a young kid, and I’m Mexican! So that kool-aid stereotype could be associated with anybody, not just one “ethnic” group. But like y’all said, stereotypes change, so what may have been stereotypical 10-20 years ago, may not be relatable today!

I think it depends on what area of town you grew up in. We drank koolaid and had a lady across the street that sold cold cups(frozen koolaid in a cup) for 25 cents. My mom would cut a huge watermelon on a hot day and divide it between the kids on the block. I didn't know I grew up in the hood till someone mentioned it when I was 14. Koolaid is terrible for anyone, though. I believe everyone in the south likes fried chicken and bbq.
@brigidtheirish2 жыл бұрын
What you said about not knowing you grew up in the hood until someone told you rings very true to me. My maternal grandma was born exactly in the middle of the Great Depression to poor Midwestern farmers. She said she didn't know she was poor until adulthood because everyone else in the area was at the same financial level. It was just life, and she had fun.

I'm a white guy from MN... I mean, super white. At least 80% of my blood is a combo of English, Scottish, & Irish (in that order). I have blue eyes, dark blonde hair, & a reddish moustache / beard. I don't tan in the summer, I just get painful sunburns. In the winter months my skin is so pale I'd swear it glows in the dark. Anyways, I grew up on Kool-Aid. Green lime flavor, orange, cherry, and yes, even grape from time to time. I had watermelon as part of picnic lunches, my family ate fast food quite often (maybe a little too much). I gotta say, Kentucky Fried was damn good in the 80's, but at some point people started freaking out about wanting their takeout to be healthier, now KFC just doesn't taste anywhere as good as it used to. I don't know what they changed but it sucks. Actually, as a kid, I preferred the taste of Church's Chicken... although my mother swears it's more greasy than KFC. As an adult now, I don't mind the occasional 40oz bottle of Miller Genuine... and I've learned something about myself: my taste buds say Kool-Aid is too sweet. 1 cup of sugar + a packet to make 2 quarts? No thx, I gotta cut the sugar down to 2/3 of a cup, and add a little extra water to make it drinkable. To sum up, yeah, maybe new stereotypes are in order for this 21st century.
