Justin & Staci, you two couldn't be more right. When I was a kid I marveled about how my parents and their friends seemed to be stuck in a certain earlier period of time. A lot of stress in the family in the late 1960's and early 1970's - Vietnam war, civil rights, assassinations, The Rolling Stones & the Beatles white album (drug references) as opposed to Glenn Miller, Johnny Rivers, or Paul Anka. Everything was changing then and changing a lot. And we kids didn't always think like our parents. As kids we didn't appreciate what our parents went through in their early lives and how it shaped them - for good or bad. Now that I'm elderly, I see the same thing in myself. In a way, I got stuck like my parents did, always comparing things in the here and now to the most intense periods of my life, which were more than 40 years ago.
@zippyzipster462 жыл бұрын
I can’t disagree with a word you said. I’m not elderly. Just 51😀. My parents were a little too old to be caught up in the 60s. They were in high school in the 50s. Neither ever went to school with a black person. I love them endlessly but their viewpoint became outdated quickly. They didn’t notice because they worked really hard and focused on responsibility and doing the right thing. We are seeing more 25 year old white kids opinionated and judgmental online and don’t work but part time while living with their parents. This country is running out of steam with lazy judgmental kids.

3:07 he raises a valid point. my grandfather was the single greatest human being I've ever known in my entire life. the person I've loved most in this world. but... by modern definitions, he was racist. He thought people should stick to their own group and not marry, but it was not due to hatred. this man did not hate people. I think it was just .....people seem to not think and just go with the flow and embrace the culture they were brought up with. I knew my grandfather to garden with neighbors who were black...and after they both worked in each others yard....they would sit in the shade and look at the work they had done and talk about it and what they needed to do the next day.....enjoying a glass of sweet tea together, but he still thought that whites and blacks shouldn't marry, but he was NOT a hateful person. my generation knows better. I think we need to give allowances for older people and "get" that times were different then and just because they might be racist by our definition, that doesn't mean they hated other people. its way more complex than that. one more thing...my grandfather was born in 1907.....I think that give it more context

Older people who use the slang, wear the clothing, copy lifestyles, adopt the latest musical tastes, try to be buddies to younger people, etc are resented by young people and mocked by their peers. Habits ingrain earlier, youthful behaviors that get reinforced when you socialize with others from your own generation. It becomes like the connection that spouses develop over time versus the tensions and confusions that existed when they first started dating.

So Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, had a problem with his extra-marital girlfriend hanging out with black men. To paraphrase, he said she can hang out with them, sleep with them, anything she wants... just don't advertise it. Ultimate irony is that the girlfriend is black/latina herself. I remember at the time of this story hitting the air doing so many double-takes that I suffer neck pain to this very day. QotD: Neither. I'm not a coffee guy. Starbucks if I was though as we don't have Duncan in my region.

the problem with getting older and society changing is that your identity has to change, you have to keep becoming a different person, in a way -- one likes to have roots, but you have to keep pulling them up and transplanting yourself - and after 6 or 7 decades, a man starts to wear out - so one has to drop out and stop paying attention, or it kind of breaks one's heart - or else, one sees that justice is finally attained, but you're not in the picture, just standing on the outside and applauding - everybody likes to make fun of old people, but that's just to push back the fear of getting old - still, it's better than the alternative :)

I have to say that I’m shocked/surprised/impressed at how you both can look at a situation from the outside ... in. Especially when it comes to racism and other -isms. Folks see/hear the racist act and they immediately go to cancel culture. NOT saying racism is good. NOT. To step back and reason out WHY Person A said (fill in) takes a higher level of humanity. NOT saying that excuses the act. NOT. I am saying that if you can see Steps 1 to whatever, you can now add up those steps and reason out WHY and HOW that person came to the point that’s now the media issue. In fact, that exact mentality is what is said concerning modern day racism and how it affects minorities. Exact same mentality. Aren’t we all told that we need to understand history in order to better understand and deal with the present? (Hint: Yes). This is no different

Burr was wrong about Walt Disney...there is not one credible shred of evidence that Walt was an anti-Semite. He had many Jewish people working for him, such as Robert and Richard Sherman, who wrote so many classic Disney songs, for both his films (such as Mary Poppins) and his theme parks (It's a Small World) who were themselves sons of Jewish parents. Still, Burr is one of my favorite comedians, and this was on the whole a very funny bit!
