Great tips. But I'm 81 and becoming more sensitive to style that refers to looking older. I quite like my age. And in truth, none of your tips refer to age. They are more about being contemporary. I absolutely want to look contemporary! When I'm on the subway, I look at how people dress to see what I might like to try. It's a lot of fun! Many ideas are clearly for younger bodies. I love looking at them without wanting to wear them. But I might see an idea that would be great on any body, even an old lady 😅. Something more contemporary. I choose to think when you refer to not looking older, you mean looking "now". Alight. I'm going to go and download that style guide now. Love your videos

The reality is: if you're rich and famous, your bags are seen as a sign of success. If you are just an ordinary worker working a 9-to-5 job, your real bag is likely to be *gtdupe*

@@LeckySenneI have never associated "rich and famous" with success. Not even as a kid...a long time ago. I thought the most glamorous woman I had ever seen was someone who visited us at a cottage wearing big red polka dots on white ...with matching red nails 😅. I was only 8 after all. If you want a designer purse, pinch your pennies for as long as it takes to buy one. But don't assume someone with a bargain basement bag is less successful. Or that people will think you aren't successful because you have a bargain basement knock-off.

I think it's a cultural thing.. I feel like those cheap, bright tricot fabric garments are way more common than neutrals around here.. and I feel they most of the time look unflattering because the material is cheap and doesn't drape beautifully..

Justine, thank you for yet another interesting video. I enjoy such videos but often feel left out. I spend most of my time in a wheelchair. Two aspects are a, you become invisible and, b, any clothes which look good when standing lose their impact when sitting. Last weekend I attended a wedding, many emails went around the family about what family members were wearing. I didn’t share the excitement as I felt no one would notice anyway. I enjoy making my clothes and altering older ones. As a result I can be different. I have always loved being myself. I used to enjoy wearing muted colours, much to my husband’s frustration, but now I concentrate on brighter clothes to help my visibility. I always choose looser clothing as I struggle to get dressed and to handle fasteners. Also sitting means my abdomen is at its most and I need to allow for arm/shoulder movement when propelling myself. The dress I made moved beautifully when on and I was sorry it would not be seen in its glory but I still felt its beauty. You know that feeling new, just right clothing practically makes you strut? Well, you can still strut when sitting in that I sat tall and proud and not my usual weary posture. The dress was fully lined with a more jewel like hue and I understitched the lining in the opposite direction, in that the lining edged the neck and sleeve lines. I really liked how the lining and main fabric worked together so wanted to highlight the effect. One of my usual choices is to layer a lot of my clothes. As my clothes don’t get seen moving I like to highlight different types/colours/finishes etc. Writing this has helped me notice how much fun I do get when playing with my clothes, and I am thankful how well my Grandmother taught me to sew. A complete turn about in mood - I think I love being different. Thank you.

I love this! I have chronic respiratory impairment post Covid and need 24/7 oxygen support. I have nasal cannulae attached to a portable oxygen concentrator that I wear as a crossbody sling bag. I have worked on my posture, strength and gait to move gracefully over short distances. My 3 style words are Visible, Engaging and Confident as I work with children. I embrace classic comfortable, effortless clothes in my preferred colour palette of jewel tones with proportions that flatter my body type. My favourite accessory is a smile coupled with eye contact. We have no reason to recede into the corners as we still have much to offer in life.

A great reminder of basic principles. I think the real issue is not necessarily looking older, but frumpy or out of date. I see so many women my age wearing out of date outfits (think cropped pants and printed tops) that would look amazing with a more polished and up to date style. You can remain comfortable in your clothes without giving up on style. Thanks Justine.

Fantastic tips!! 🙌 Some things I also advocate for are: 1) Gradually getting used to bolder colours with baby steps. Maybe a medium periwinkle, lavender, cherry, or cornflower blue for example. Start small and get used to seeing yourself in that colour first, and then go brighter. 2) One signature accessory in a bright colour to also ease into the transition. An eye-catching scarf, pair of gloves, or handbag can really change the whole vibe of an outfit. 3) Make it a point to look at the people around you on a typical day out, and/or fashion accounts online. If you see an outfit that you love on someone else but hadn't considered for yourself, then use that as inspiration to build an outfit to suit your body type.

Justine, I adore you! Every idea and video is implanted in my head. You’re my style icon with your fresh, minimal lines, concentrating on color, fabric and fit. I’ve learned so much from you. About the neutrals, my mother was a classic fashion plate. She knew which designer fit her petite frame therefore always looking great. I was chubby when she dazzled, so there was little point emulating her at that time. While all my friends shopped at “Collegiate Shop”, I had to go to…are you ready….”The Chubbette Shop” 😮! My self esteem was beaten down to nonexistence lol. No problem. I’m 107 lbs now. Regarding neutrals, a woman at a design house told her : “Nothing screams money louder than beige.” For the right occasion, I go to beige for no other reason than to showcase my jewelry. No, it’s not Cartier. Lol. Thanks again, Justine. I appreciate every video. 🙏🪷❤️

Up until recently almost everything for plus size women (like me) was all big, huge prints in garish colors. It doesn't so much work if you're also petite like me. Thankfully I've found good clothing in neutrals and pastels as well as moderate and small patterns. Also, the boxy + fitted is really great - I like to do, for example, a boxy blazer with a fitted blouse and fitted trousers, or wide-leg trousers with a fitted blouse and fitted cardigan. Always great advice here!

Thank you for your free advice! I did notice in the timeless fashion PDF, that my body type was left out; a flat board turned into a barrel over time! Over the decades, what with gravity, diet, and forty years at a “desk-job”, my darn stomach has almost equaled my breast measurements and hip measurements. I’m 5’ 3” and 130 ponds, so I don’t feel I’m overweight, but I sure look it. I’ve tried the belt and tucking the front of the shirt into the pants front, but, on me, it still looks frumpy. As I rarely leave my home, it’s just me I’m trying to please, so for the most part, I’m embracing the “frump”! (I still wear my rings everyday with gemstones color coordinated with my outfit. It makes me happy. I can still wear the aquamarine ring my mom gave me for my 16th birthday) Thanks for all you do ! Love your ring collection

Merci, Justine! Clear, sound, practical advice as usual, & following it doesn't necessarily require buying scads of new clothes & jewelry. I like that you couch it in terms of modernizing, updating styles rather than focusing on age & youth. (Beautiful cameos by Iris Apfel & Jennifer Lawrence!) As a petite, not-so-tall woman, I will be thrilled when boxy styles start receding. Too often it seems like lazy, cheap design: don't bother to consider the body wearing it, just make it a flat, wide box & it'll fit everyone! One last note, nothing to do with today's video, but I want you to know that I absolutely love my crossbody bag! Love.

Tarnishing is inevitable with silver but you can slow it down. I only wear sterling silver because everything else irritates my skin, and I've found it tarnishes more when exposed to the air (I live in a coastal region so maybe that adds to it). I have lots of earrings and hang them up on boards, so what I did was I put the boards into large plastic ziplock bags and keep them sealed. Other jewellery that doesn't hang up, I keep in clear plastic boxes that are closed. It's not pretty like a fancy box would be but it takes much longer now for them to tarnish plus they don't get dusty. I also got a proper silver polishing cloth from a jeweller and use it if they start looking a bit darker.

When I studied Communication Design, we had to learn, that not just the product we present needs to be good, the presentation needs to look good, our invoices, our email signatures - since this is what we get paid to do. Our clients come to us for design, so everything we present to the world in our name, needs to have our signature. There were times I spent 3 hours on writing a simple invoice until I went to a more automated system (but still spent 3+ hours creating my templates there, too ; ) But now that i have it, its a 15min thing ) - what i am longwindedly saying here: This is something I appreciate about you. Your 'brand' is fashion: elegant, sustainable, personal, polished, conscious. And this reflects in everything you do and present. From the articles you write to your newsletter. We notice - maybe subconsciously. All that extra work is worth it and is something i deeply appreciate about you. (And I also think of the cobbler having the worst shoes. My business cards looked horrible first semester graphic design artsy because it took ages to finally tackle my own CI : D by now I did. Either for 'serious clients' or for 'fun clients')

thank you very much. It's super interesting to read these adjectives about how you perceive my aesthetics across platforms and media. I do find it incredibly hard to make the words and the images (videos) match. We don't learn to apply one's aesthetics to video, in fashion school: we learn only to describe our work visually (through static images aka mood boards, through texture, fabrics, volumes and colours), and with words. In video, the challenge of the technical know-how comes on top (esp. because I don't hire a professional agency to film me, I do it myself) - I can see that my videos have improved with time, but I feel they still don't have the look they should have in order for them to look the way I want to (and I've published over 300 videos...). But since you work in design as well, you surely experience this too: it's all still work in progress even though from an outside perspective, it already kind of fits together. That's why I don't believe in "talent", "genius" and this kind of thing. Clearly, what makes creatives stand out is much more training one's eye, practicing one's craft, reflecting on the result and then repeating that process again and again. There's a theory about needing 10,000 hours in order to reach mastery in any field (can't remember whose theory this was) but I find that this number doesn't even come close!

On a side note, I am always surprised, when I learn that a channel I've been watching for a long time hired an editor... usually it improves the work and those people can do more of what they really want to do. The editor usually has such a strong voice, too and I am always amazed if the transition is seamless. That's a craft with ??? for me.

I like you and your channel. I've already enjoyed countless things, learned many others, but I think the world belongs to everyone. And everyone has the right to have their opinion validated, and to dress how they feel best, to be able to express themselves without fear, to have their space to be themselves. It is not possible for other people to determine how we should dress, and silence our will, our values, our personal tastes. We don't all need to come in the same way. We can be free, we should fight for freedom. Still, thank you for so many good things you teach us.

Hi and thank you for the pdf reference on timeless wardrobes. I always think when I see queen Camilla that she is someone who understands who she is and what her body style is, or her designers do. I always think she looks very nice. She is someone I look to for inspiration. Also I like the Advanced Style and StyleCrone ladies. They are not afraid to put eclectic things together. I love that.

I love wearing jewel tones, but all that's in stores anymore is neutrals. I pointed out to my husband how every store just has black, white, and beige, and now he mentions it every time we are somewhere that sells clothes - it's like once you see it, you can't unsee it. But I also think at least the first couple "don'ts" around fit and color are actually what's in style right now for Gen Z and young millennials. I (elder millennial) feel like my fitted pieces and brighter colors are dating me when I'm with younger colleagues 😆🙃

@@justineleconte I have just looked on their website and the tiered jupon is just the most expensive item they sell ! It uses a lot of fabric but still. On the subject of forever clothes, there are a lot : trenches, Barbour, cabans, breton tops, striped popeline shirts, 100% coton straight jeans, made in Scotland sweaters whether camel hair, cashmere, geelong, Shetland…. Some Liberty fabrics such as strawberry thief.

I find I look bright in a good shade of brown. I used to be a very bright redhead, I suit autumn colours. I like to add either a bright accessory or a patterned something in matching colours. Strange to say it can look quite bright if put together well. We are all unique.

Thanks for the belt idea because it is so hot (34-36 C) and humid that linen is my best friend. At the grocery last night, I did kind of feel like I was in lounge mode. Black now makes me look dead half of the year so I only have a pair of black pants, a button up shirt, a top, a pair of all purpose flats, a tailored raincoat, and that is it. I have taken advantage of the blues, greens, teals, wine colors, and tomato that have been popular over the past year and work really well with my hair and skin coloring. I am kind of a fabric junky, and I like a well designed pattern, but I have really reined myself in to items that work well with multiple solid pants and jackets and that make me happy when I see them. For the first time in more than a decade, I am beginning to have a wardrobe that has a lot of mix and match options, livens up my skin and hair, and makes it fun to get dressed. I can’t wait to see your guide and get more tips for improvement.

Love this. I would love to see a video from you about men's fashion! I'm a trans man in my late twenties, and I have so much trouble finding clothes that aren't either too young or too old (or too boring 😭). I still love fashion as a man, and now that I'm transitioning and starting to love my body, I don't want to dress it in khaki trousers and patterned button ups forever!!

I put my earrings and necklaces into sets and photo them. I can easily decide which set to wear with outfits or to take for traveling. Sets are designed to match in metal and scale (mire dominant necklace to pair with smaller earrings for example). With or without earrings and necklace I wear stack rings and staking bracelets or bangles daily. I love slim rings stacked and I love 2 or 3 bracelets on each wrists. I put pins on my hats and bags often. I don’t care what others think of me wearing loads of jewelries. It’s my signature whenever i am out of door, regardless if i wear tee and jeans or a dress.

Hey Justine~ Thank you… this was interesting! All my life I have dressed the same - for comfort, and I doubt my style will change now: floor-length well-fitted skirt (very occasionally pants with a similar silhouette) with larger and / or relaxed longer plain top with accessories. I rarely take any accessory off - earrings, necklaces or scarf, watch and bracelets on left wrist, rings on my right thumb and one finger on my left hand. There is always something that ties each piece to at least one other piece. Given I am usually thought to be much younger than I am, it seems I’m not aging myself. One thing I want to try to do, it makes more sense to me now, is a piece in a print with a piece in a graphic (dots, stripes, etc.) print. I also loved the color discussions. I think I’ll go watch this video again… once was not enough…. 😉

I love prints because I feel like I can go with one print and pull out the solid colors I want, depending on which day. For example, I can wear floral prints that have green leaves with purple and pink flowers. The flower have yellow or orange middles, so that's another color. This means that each time I wear that bold floral, I can choose one of those colors to accent. Because of the different color combinations, it means so many different outfits.

Ahhh we missed you, so happy you posted one today 😊! I noticed that neutral colors are worn in a lot of K-drama shows and they look nice on them, maybe it could be their pale complexion; although they also incorporate colors and accessories that’s why it’s working out fine. But small important tweaks makes HUGE difference, thanks for the reminder. Hope you’re having a great sommer 😊
