Thank you very much for the demo. I lost the use of my left three fingers in a very nasty near death accident after 47 years of playing. I was a professional session guitarist, self taught, and then classically trained. I actually gave away three guitars, and sold one. I think now there is hope to still sling a heavy monster guitar over my shoulder once again. Thank you for the encouragement. If you sell lessons on DVD, please let me know. I'm retired now, and this is what my speech therapist for my attention, and concentrtion was talking about. Recovery has been slow, and most arduous. Thank you again.

I've played guitar most of my life (I'm 61) and never had the patience to learn slide guitar, but since I cut my left index finger on my left (fretting) hand I'm giving it a go again. I've already been through several other beginning slide guitar videos, but this is the best one yet. You are an excellent teacher - thanks mate!

Justin you're too good to be true - teacher. I'm learning from you without even need of a guitar next to me, nor to do it; and I can do it 1-2 hours later and still remember what you've said because you've explained it so detailed.

Hi Justin, another great lesson and perfect for newcomers to slide. I've been playing slide for some years and my heroes are Ry Cooder and Lowell George of Little Feat. Also love Michael Messer and Sonny Landreth. I agree with you that for beginners, starting in standard tuning is no bad thing, but eventually you will graduate towards open tuning to get the real Delta sound. A trick I learned from Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is to tune the first string down to D. That way you can play in standard tuning with the bottom five strings(EADGB) and in open G with the top four strings (DGBD). It's a really neat trick!

It's a bit late to learn a guitar for me at my age, still, I want to learn to play *something*. I've watched plenty of tutors on YT and have to say YOU are really good, you have a pleasant disposition. I also go to a guitar teacher anyway. Very good lesson. One thing you did not discuss is why you prefer having the slide on your ring finger. It does seem to be the most common preference but it is not universal. I prefer to wear it on my pinky which allows the other three fingers to be available to fret chords when playing a song that requires both slide work and chord/pick work. I like to use slides made by Rock Slide as they have a small indentation that allows the adjacent finger to rest comfortably on the slide. Keep up the fabulous work.

Hey that really helped about muting the strings behind ( to the top of the neck twards the nut) im just learning slide my self. And I think it is eayer to familiarize your self with the technique in standard tunings. Besisides not all slide is in odd tunings. It is one thing to learn the technique in standard to figure out how and why you use your slide then start learning scales is a nice progression. That is exactly how I was going about it teaching myself then you confirmed method of teaching myself. That was right where I was at. This tip about muting gave me more confidence. So I started changing tunings. That was a big leap! Thanks cuz now it is starting to sound right. You said a heavy slide is better and I have used both now and would agree. I felt at first the heavy one banged into the strings when I would set it down. But this new slide is tapererd on the inside. And is glass. so it kinda sticks to your finger which helped with my control.I know I saw an interview with geo. Thorogood who said he just used cheep copper pipe from the hardware store and he gave slides away pretty often. And they were cheep. Now tring this glass slide that was not cheep at all I see what helped geo was his finger fit the cheep copper pipe so I too agree fit is everything if it does not fit it wont work.also for the rock guys out there. A band called rival sons has a wicked guitar player who does a bunch of slide. I saw them open for sammy hagar in America. From the front row I saw he uses a slide made by a guy in Colorado USA that is a small steel rod with a ring attached so he plays normaly then flips it between his pinky and ring finger and slides. Super very cool they are on you tube give em a try I loved their 70's retro style with modern songs. His choice of guitars has my guitar envy going forsure. Makes me want to play slide all day! Thanks Justin

Hi Justin! What are you thoughts on the finger used for the slide? I've seen people using their pinky or ring finger. What are the pros/cons?
@sayshuh6 жыл бұрын
I am a pinky slide player, have been since the day I started guitar. Johnny Winter is the best way to see one of the absolute best ever. I listened to JW for many years to get the slide and really nice blues scales, licks. Now I'm old school, No KZbin, No anything other than you and your desire to learn. People refused to show you anything unless they were teaching guitar. I will eventually put a beginning slide video up for the players who are interested in slide.
