Everyone, don't forget to donate to Justin. He won't tell you, so I will. He spends a lot of time and effort putting these lessons together and I think they're worth paying for. And no, I don't get kickbacks from him!
@stuarcari8 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Kirby Thanks for the reminder. I've tried to support Justin in the past by buying a couple of books and DVDs and always meant to donate. Just went and donated a few lessons worth just now. It depressed me read that only 0.05% of users donate. I understand that many people can't afford it (been there), and that's OK, but I'm sure more than 0.05% of visitors to his site can afford even the price of a single lesson. There must be £1000's worth of lesson on his site. I don't mean to sound preachy or self-righteous, but if you can afford it, think about helping the guy out by donating or buying one of his products. Sadly, I don't know Justin or get anything for saying this either lol!

I had been, too! I was totally bending with just my fingers, but using the arm & wrist, once you get it, ends up being WAY easier.
@tommydiehl67947 ай бұрын
Same here after watching this vid. Always used my fingers. Didn't realize something was off until watching The Boss's live version of Streets of Fire...he bends and bends (the whole solo is a bend) and it looks like he's choking the life out of the guitar (the correct way)...when I did it I was not able to recreate that sound because I wasn't 'choking' it but daintily bending with just my fingers. This really helps with vibrato and sustain, I always lost sustain with finger bending.

Very few teachers even mention the importance of muting at the top of the bend. I’ve been buying online lessons from a guy who never spends time teaching fretboard techniques, when it’s maybe the most important stuff. Like slides, bending, double stops, hammer on, hammer offs, plucks etc, all that stuff…Learning the fundamental technique correctly from the start to avoid learning bad habits is so important!!…If you walk into the room when I’m prenticing blues lead you will reflexively duck you head down to avoid all the seagulls flying around. I’ve know it sounds bad but I’ve never learned how to deal with it properly…and I hate guessing and piling bad habit on top of bad habit….Excellent lesson Justin, thanks!

The way I use my Peterson strobo stomp tuner for bends is to bend to pitch before ever looking at the tuner and first asking myself did I hit it? Did it sound sharp? Did I think I was flat? then look down and see. It must be instantaneous, but easy once you do it a time or two. Soon my ear was fine tuned to almost exact rather than just really close to pitch. Once I did this for all notes, I noticed my music sounded so much better and made micro bends sound more spot on too (never used the tuner for micro bends just ear trained already using tuner for bends to specific notes. Really taught me to use ear as the guide). Then quit the tuner entirely. Watching the tune as you did it would only teach you to use the tuner not your ear and you would never learn pitch just how to bend until a display says good. lol This lesson really helped me on technique as a was really using my fingers more than wrist action and using the pivot as instructed made my bends more evenly controlled through the pitch range to target note if that makes sense.

Great lesson Justin. That is the way I teach it, the power comes from forearm rotation with fingers held rigid to transfer the force. 2 other important mechanics: the thumb must push down and the wrist must not be allowed to come up. Students constantly do these 2 things wrong.

@@starkayy5896 thank you for confirming what I finally figured out. It's still high because the nut slots are too high and I've yet to address it but swapping to a real Fender Bridge helped out tremendously for some reason. I can get the strings lower without fret buzz, which helped a lot. I also found that fingernails as short as possible helps a lot, too lol. I don't have long nails by any means but keeping them as short as possible works best, it seems
