I didnt see it in the video, but i skipped the oil cooler part so maybe you mentioned it, but it is important to check for blow by. Get the truck hot and remove the oil fill cap and if it is puffing out white smoke like a steam engine, I suggest staying away. Also, when the truck is off, you can unhook the starter cable along the passenger wall of the engine bay and touch the positive terminal of the passenger battery. The truck will crank but wont start (so long as the key isnt in the ignition) and if the crank doesnt have an even hum to it, I would also stay away. An uneven sounding crank suggests a dead cylinder which means you will likely need a new engine block

I'm a newby to the 6.0's and picking one up today that's not running. I'm buying it as a project to help with a skid steer business i started recently. Looking forward to picking it up and figuring out its issues as I'm a mechanic also but new to the diesel world.

I'm still amazed that dually only has 67k miles on it - it's practically new. All good points covered in this video. One thing I believe you forgot to mention was aside from a clogged oil cooler causing high oil temps, it'll also eventually cause your EGR cooler to fail (if I'm not mistaken, coolant flows first through your oil cooler to your EGR cooler) by overheating and subsequently cracking allow coolant to enter the intake. An obvious sign of a bad EGR cooler is white steam/smoke from the tailpipe.

I have a 05 Excursion 6.0 and love it! It had 132,000 miles on it when I got it. As soon as I got it I did the Sinister Diesel blue spring mod, replaced the charge pipes, Egr delete, updated OEM oil cooler, dummy plugs, and coolant flush. Then put on a Sinister Diesel coolant filtration kit and No Limit cold air intake. Also changed out both fuel filters and using Archoil now. Trying to do as much preventative maintenance as I can. Very informative video. 😎👍

Awesome video youngster LOL. I appreciate the info on the SCT update and the stand pipes and dummy plugs. I've had my 04 Power Stroke for 2.5 yrs. And this is the first time I've heard about those updates and I don't live under a rock. I purchased a coolant filter but it leaked and wasn't a good quality one, so I took it off. I invested in the Amsoil filtration system and can really vouch for how clean my oil is. I have the SCT 4 for about a year and a half and it was another good purchase. Monitoring my oil and coolant is the biggest reason but the tunes are good too. The difference in my delta has been as high as 20 but it never stays there usually when climbing or accelerating it will climb. However it is unusually hot this year. Thanks for the video God bless.
@JUSTINHAWKSMITH2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you’ll be needing a new oil cooler soon. You can also look into “backflushing” your coolant system … to break away debris from oil cooler to keep oil/coolant delta temp closer to each other. 20 degree delta is past due for fresh oil cooler… go ahead and do the oil cooler with STC fitting update and I think you’ll be super pleased!! Thank you for watching and god bless

Also something that is very important. The replacement D-gas bottles markings are wrong. The minimum line is actually the full line. If you overfill it it can be too much pressure and blow the head gasket.

Should I buy a bone stock 2006 with 135k miles? Or buy a “bulletproofed” 2006 with a 140k miles and just hope it was all done correctly?
@a-dog80754 жыл бұрын
Depends on your budget. If you want to do the bullet proofing yourself then buy the 135k one. If you dont want to pay for that then buy the bullet proofed one. Hoped this helped
@JUSTINHAWKSMITH4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I kind of agree with a dog above here^ , all depends on budget and also price. I’d you can get the stock one cheaper plus it’s got less miles, if the head gaskets are good you can bulletproof whenever you’d like and have a motor that was put together by ford not some random technician... then choose what 6.0 machanic you want to bulletproof your truck. You get to choose who tears it apart rather than buying a truck someone else chose that. My personal opinion is I would take a stock 6.0 over a bulletproofed one anyday. As long as it has good head gaskets.
@colekynerd53984 жыл бұрын
@@JUSTINHAWKSMITH thanks for the advice. That’s kind of what I was thinking too. I want to buy stock then do an egr delete and oil cooler just to be safe. Then really bulletproof later on down the road.
@MadLadCustoms4 жыл бұрын
Your most expensive part of the bulletproof is the head gasket since it requires removal of heads and possible machining of the surface (on top of the cost of studs/gaskets etc). If you're mechanically inclined, doing the EGR/Oil Cooler/Coolant Filtration/Blue Spring is fairly easy. I'd get a quote from a reputable shop to see what would be a better value for you. Also keep in mind that there's a high chance that an already bulletproof truck has had a tuner run, so it might be in worse shape than the stock one.
@colekynerd53984 жыл бұрын
@@MadLadCustoms thanks for the advice. I think I’m gonna go for the stock truck, and do an egr delete maybe an oil cooler and see how she holds up

@UnderSprayedWhiteSkies4 жыл бұрын
I think you are being overly modest about your 6.0L knowledge. I would say after being a 3x 6.0L owner, and doing much of your own wrenching, you've become very knowledgeable. I've never owned a 6.0L, and haven't really been serious about buying one, but I've watched several DieselTech Ron's videos, he's definitely the Man. It would have been nice to hear more detail ($, level of difficulty) for your coolant filter upgrade. Also, you didn't mention anything about the FICM, isn't that another, common fail point of six-ohs?
@Bob-fk6kn Жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely the FICM. Have to check and keep batteries healthy so as to not get low voltage that will damage the FICM. BTW, unless you are fairly wealthy YOU HAVE to be a mechanic to keep an eye on everything that could go wrong to keep from blowing the motor. I had a 2003 first generation 6.0 I used for transporting. Went all over the country and border to border, and coast to coast several times and talked to every mechanic that would help trying to figure out why it was blowing blue smoke. Right before I screwed up and lost the truck I figured out that it was the wiring harness inside the transmission shorting out. I tried everything under the sun prior to that. But, once I changed that harness it ran like a brand new truck. Just shortly after that though I screwed up and accidentally put a little gas in it and blew the injectors.... because I didn't have the money to fix it I had to trade it off for a beater to get home to get back in my other truck to be able to keep running and not lose my business. Sad, sad time in my life when I lost that truck. I was just learning to love it.

Failed head gaskets it’s still sadly common even on “bulletproofed” trucks. If your pushing coolant you more than likely have blown head gaskets sadly.
@noahpitman13524 жыл бұрын
No because there’s no bubbles in coolant tank and no white smoke out the tailpipe and it never overheats so I doubt it
@JUSTINHAWKSMITH4 жыл бұрын
@@noahpitman1352 trucks with blown headgaskets wont overheat, wont commonly push white smoke , and bubbles wouldnt occur either, only pushing coolant.
@07outlawpsd854 жыл бұрын
Yep. They can push cylinder pressure into the the cooling system via a blown head gasket. The best way to check is to "T" a pressure gauge into the small line near the degas bottle. Drive the truck until it reaches operating temp. Watch the gauge. If it exceeds 16psi. under a load then your gaskets are roached. 16psiis when the cap relieves pressure and you get coolant being "pushed out".
