Going shorter on the fringe helps lighten my hair, which is dead straight and curl resistant, helps it hold a bit of a curl and show off the layering and avoids me looking like Moe of the three stooges. I didn’t think I could pull that off, but I was wrong. Also, I cut my own hair and use the texturising scissors as directed (and I also point cut) and also to keep the back in shape and tight to my head, which is so much easier when doing this on my own.

😅 I have naturally curly hair. It kinda looks like I got one of those spiral perms 😊 from the 80's 😂. I have an oval face and I battle to find a good hairdresser that kan cut my hair properly. I really want a messy pixie Bob 😅 but I'm so scared the hairdresser is gonna cut it the same way you would straight hair. 😢

I quit all hairdressers. They just do what they always do totally ignoring what you say. I was a highly successful hairdresser for 35 years. I know hair & especially my hair. Not 1 hairdresser ever listened to me. I even brought in my finer-than-fine blending shears for them to use & they barely touched my super thick hair. I actually look better chopping it at home even tho I can't see the back & my arms don't twist to the right angle.

My stylist of over 20 years died from COVID. She was in an upscale salon and I paid a lot of money but she was worth it. Now I go to kind of a dated old salon and the woman I found hardly charges me anything and gives me some of the best haircuts I've ever had. Dont judge by the look of the salon!

Great tips - I have been cutting my hair since the start of the pandemic - I find at 84 its very liberating. I can see that all the points you make are so true. One of the few good things about getting old [ there aren't many lol ] is you don't care about what people think anymore, so I snip away in the hope that one day I'll have that near perfect pixie x

I’m really curious about how you are managing cutting your own pixie. I am not at all pleased with what I’m paying big $$$ for and I’m now on my 4th stylist. I would love to get out of paying for something I’m not happy with, but I love the pixie length.

In 2019 I had my hair cut in a pixie style - it was the last one and yeha no more £100 every couple of months. I just go into the bathroom with my sharp pointy scissors and snip away [ not too much, start with about a quarter of an inch ] you need a mirror to hold and a large wall mirror to be able to check all the angles. I take into account the shape of my head and the way my hair grows. Something hairdressers never ever did for me ! As you grow in confidence you'll be amazed at how fantastic you'll feel. I wish you lots of luck and God Bless x@@Wellbaby94

Most stylists don’t posses your level of skill or dedication to their craft. I have had so many lousy haircuts over the years. They don’t listen and don’t take face shape or hair type into consideration. Also if the stylist doesn’t style their own hair, dress smartly or wear makeup, run.

I get my hair cut at a local beauty school and have very rarely ever been not happy with the results. I always ask for a razor cut and for a student who is interested in learning how to do one or who loves doing them. The instructors are always near to help, show, and advise. I tell them that I look at this as doing a service by providing them hair to cut, since I’m no longer able to donate my blood at the local blood center. I also tell them not to worry about my freaking out if they accidentally cut it too short because it will always grow out. This usually puts them more at ease and I have a relaxing time, including a wash and scalp massage. I try to stick with whatever student I get, until she graduates, then ask her to recommend the next student. This has worked well for many years. They do all the things that are in this video, so I know I’ve done well with my choice of “salons”.

And if the student isn't able to satisfy the client you get a redo as the instructor checks the haircut. Ages ago during my life as a cosmetology instructor there were some pretty tricky clients that waited patiently for me to check the cut, then asked for changes that amounted to a whole new cut. I caught on to that pretty quick. They were the people who colored their own hair, had their non hairdresser sister do their perm every four months... 🤯

Its so so hard to find a stylist who knows how to do this type of cut right. My old stylist who retired would cut a V (similar to the M) in the back and it was fabulous. Thank you! This is excellent. Many years ago, I wanted to have my haircut when I went to Italy. So, instead of getting my hair cut before the trip, I kept it a little longer. It was the most amazing haircut. Essentially, all I had to do was shake out my hair after coming out of the shower and a little gel. When I asked my hairdresser to look at what was different, she said there was nothing! Maybe different shampoo! So, I began my search to understand texturizing and point cut. And, when COVID and a broken hip happened at the same time, I began practicing cutting my own hair. I watched videos and carefully practiced cutting my hair. I was one of those people who spent a lot of money on my hair. And, frankly, I really prefer my hair today! And, I especially appreciate this video. Thank you, again!

Thank you for the Pixie tips. Oh god - I asked my hairdresser to leave the "M" neckline. She always cut mine straight across and I hated it. She was quiet offended when I said I think I'd "like" to leave the "m" line at the back of my neck this time. She was definitely not impressed that I was the one making a hairdresser request. Obviously some hairdressers are extremely "delicate".

When I sported a pixie and the stylist cut the nape straight across, I would always say it made my neck look like that of a linebacker (and that’s not how I want to “sport” a style). So I would have him or her buzz an inverted V to break it up and give it some sass.

I find that when I have a bob shape, my natural level 7 dark blonde color is great but when I go short, a stronger, much lighter level 9 blonde looks best. On me, short hair and my natural color just looks average or ordinary. When I amp it up with color, the same cut looks extraordinary.

Thanks for this, Justin. I have believed intuitively everything you are saying about the right shape for a short cut. I’m in a frustrating time because my stylist of 30+ years (yes, I, too, am old🙀) has moved away, full on disaster!😭 I have tried three times since she left to get my hair cut and it’s been terrible all three times.😬 I asked to have the above the temple area you mention and the back of my hair to be left full enough to not go flat. I wanted some light layering on top, but not short layers, and I wanted a pixie (going from an undercut). I knew on this last cut I was headed to the hospital for cancer surgery, so I wanted a short haircut, nicely shaped and easy to manage, to get me through this ordeal. No dice. It seems no matter how I explain these concepts or how much I pay for a haircut, I can’t get anyone to do it. Sure wish I lived near you! My top is thinner because I’ve had several cancer surgeries on my scalp and hair doesn’t grow on scars, but if cut correctly (like my long time stylist always cut it), it looks surprisingly full. I am at my wits end. Any idea of how to find a good stylist, or articulate what I want differently so that I can actually get a good haircut? Maybe I should just have them watch this video! I am beyond frustrated and I can tell tell you even bad haircuts aren’t cheap! Thanks again, love your videos!

Spot on, Justin! I finally found someone to cut my hair into a pixie, actually she is my son's barber! She has done the "m" neckline, left the top longer, and is really good at shaping the profile to add more volume at the back of my head (which is a flat). I was able to discuss what I wanted with her... and she was very receptive. We decided together to try a soft undercut on the sides along with tapering to create a shape that adds a softness to my face while accenting my cheek bones. I am about to travel to Europe for a month, and I will not be taking a blow dryer. I LOVE how easy and flattering this haircut is for me. ADDITIONALLY: I am trying out using a shampoo bar instead of liquid shampoo in order to make travel packing and going through TSA checkpoints easier. I found a "purple" shampoo bar online, and it seems to be working for my short hair. However, I have found others that seem to have way too much oils in them. I know you have some favorite products, but you also say to use what works best for us. I am just curious... what are your thoughts on shampoo bars?
@gwenjones1913
@gwenjones1913 7 ай бұрын
Hi Andrea! I know you didn’t ask me but I Love our shampoo bar. It took a year for my husband and I to use 1 bar of a Viori shampoo bar. Got it on Amazon and I think it was the only one there at the time…but there’s a lot more out there now. I don’t, however, get good results from the conditioner bar. I think it would depend on your hair type. But for travel, they’d be perfect!
@g3andrea
@g3andrea 7 ай бұрын
@@gwenjones1913 I found some shampoo bars in local stores, but they didn't smell good. I did find one with Tea Tree Oil to try, but it has a lot of other oils also. If my hair was extremely dry, it might be more suitable. Instead, I use it as a moisturizing body bar, and I use it about once a week on my hair. I ordered one online that is "purple" to help with brassiness and gray hair. So far, I am pleased with it, especially when I alternate the two. I cut a small piece off each bar, put them in small organza bags, and use those for travel! Thanks for your input! 🙂

Make your own corner mirror to see all sides of your head when you want to cut your own hair by sticking mirrors on the insides of bathroom cabinet doors (or any cupboard doors for that matter) with doors that open away from each other or on the outside of cupboard doors that open towards each other. Or, if you have a spare corner anywhere, strategically stick mirrors where the walls meet. Or, stick mirrors on hinged plywood panels which can stand up by themselves while you cut and which can then be folded away for storage.

this is an awesome video. I've had a pixie for almost 30 years...but after neurosurgery i don't want anyone touching my head...so my boyfriend (who is completely bald) has become my hairdresser, lol. We've experimented with a lot and he's getting the hang of it, but your videos offer the perfect tips! Thank you for taking the time to make these and share your hard earned knowledge.

This is such AWESOME info!! Especially the details on texturing and the difference between shears! I had no idea!! I wish you would explain which direction to hold the texturing shears tho...I have heard that is important too....i just gave myself some long bangs to get rid of some overly blonde and processed hair around my face and you nailed it! Looks chopped... and my hair is very thick. Gonna try this! I'm totally that person that has zero professional training that messes around with my hair between appts for better or worse 😢😂 this is super interesting and helpful info Justin! Thanks! And he's right guys watch out for cutting those knuckles!! OUCH

Thank you Justin. About to have this type of cut so will be using some key terms from your video. I think the problem is we know what we want, but we don't know the terminology hairdressers use for it. They love the shaver too - and regrowth looks like a bloke's bristles. I know! Come and visit your brother, and if you can just nip into Wiltshire to cut my hair, that will be great, thank you very much!

As a pixie cut survivior, the best tip I can give you is to bear with the even lengths by believing it will all be worth it. I went from pixie to never ever putting scissors in my hair, opting to keep it moistruized at the ends. I look decades younger and have never felt more feminine

Hi Justin, I'm Liz. I love your videos (just discovered you two or three days ago). They've been so helpful and you and Dionna have great personalities! Regarding the Pixie cut: are there any thoughts on what to do with weird wave patterns at the temples when you have a pixie cut? I have naturally thick hair with bumpy waves that I get straightened with the Japanese Straightening process (which I love) when I'm wearing it long. Will I need to keep doing the JSP if I cut it into a pixie? In the past when I've gotten my hair cut short pre using JSP, the wave was problematic and made my hair got really bumpy there. Btw, my husband hasn't liked my hair short in the past because I was never satisfied with the cuts and kept going shorter (maybe I didn't know these tips then!)

Great information! Thank you! My stylist tends to use the texturizing shears starting at halfway down the hair shaft and then moving up to the ends. I feel like it takes out too much - I wish she would just do the ends. Also about the M - my neck hair growth tends toward the duck tail, so she cuts it that way and uses the shaver on the rest of my neck so you only see a duck tail. I think I'd like that M look on my neck - but not sure if it would work?

I am stuck in a hair dilemma at the moment. I spent the last few years growing out a short spiky cut. I had some long layers cut in to add movement and help give it life, and loved it.. until... Age, and too much stress has it thinning so much! My thin, fine hair is just, well, sad.

I do have a pixie, and I do love it, but I have to remind my stylist almost every time not to cut the nape straight across, nor to cut the sides into little triangles and to use a razor the wisp out and taper these areas! Do you ever cut hair dry? At my last appointment, the cut had been particularly good all 5 weeks, and hardly needed cutting. She decided that she would cut it dry to preserve the shape. She used both scissors and a razor, but I felt the razor pulling quite a bit, and now have a bald spot! I am able to camouflage this, but can't help thinking that the razor on dry hair is a mistake and could cause many mishaps.

On my second cut with a new stylist, I told her the sides seemed too heavy or full. Her solution? Lift up half the sides and whack it off. It took over a year to grow it out enough for another cut (from a new stylist of course). Yesterday I had my hair cut in a perfect short pixieish style. I love it! She did many of the things you suggest.

I learned all these through trial and error, but trying to get an actual stylist to do them is nigh on impossible- and they all love to use a razor...on my curly hair that's a no. Speaking of curl they like to cut it wet, then I've been scalped. I basically cut it pretty much to how I want and then randomly pinch chunks and nip away with the scissors, maybe not professional but it gives it both movement and the ability to lie flat rather than pouf out. One has to be a contortionist to do the nape though, sadly. I've been thinking of trying a men's barber, they might be able to understand what I need :)
@ClareHarrison-qi3bw
@ClareHarrison-qi3bw 8 ай бұрын
Yes, yes and yes. Have curly hair, which some hairdressers don't seem to appreciate will bob up after a bit of layering. Always have to cut a chunk or two off. Had the same hairdresser for years and we used to chat for Britain but I was always a bit worried she wasn't paying attention. Out comes the shaver , for the neck, without asking - any regrowth is basically like men's bristles. I had wondered about using a barber. Almost for the novelty and no obligations to go back.

Please advise! I am trying to grow out my bob. Six months ago I was badly burned and my hair was burned too. Those burned parts, on the outside and top of the style, are just breaking off shorter and shorter leaving the very top looking chopped off and dry. What can I do to stop the breakage ? Is my only option to cut layers ?

My hair is curly and the top is thinned out a lot and has gotten frizzy. Since my hair is grey, all the pixies no matter what is said, look the same, the old lady bowl cut. I've seen attempts at point cutting that were more rectangular than triangular. I've never seen texturizing shears used only thinning shears, so that is very interesting. Since Covid I've given up getting my hair cut professionally and gone to wearing wigs. I wonder if you could talk a bit about those of us who need to learn to cut our own hair because we're simply not finding professionals who know how to point cut, texturize and not choose bowl cuts for all old ladies

I’ve learned to cut my own hair, although I’m still improving my skills. One thing I can tell you, is that you’ll need two mirrors positioned in a way that allow you to see the back of your head. You need to be able to move in a way so that you can see the sides and then the back as you cut your hair. i also had to learn how to hold the scissors with my left hand, imitating very carefully the movements of my right hand (do the opposite if you’re left-handed). Just two tips for you to start. 😊

I'm not sure if the mirrors I have in my bathrooms are still being manufactured, but I've bought several through the years from a glass and mirror shop. It's called Swing Vue. I have single articulated and double articulated. If you're able to locate one have someone very picky hang it for you. It must be hung level and plumb for ease of use. If not hung correctly it'll be a nightmare to use because it won't stay where you need it. I've been less satisfied with the double articulated one I have.

I have a question, love your videos. So my pixie is shaved on the sides and back, crown is about 1 1/2 inch long with feather short bangs since I have a short forehead 😊. However, top back toward the right I have a cowlick that it stands up my hairdresser is great and we tried a lot of things even cutting it they way it grows but after a week it standup. I don’t watch my hair everyday but if I but paste for it to lie down than I have to watch everyday and with winter and blow dry ugh. When I had my hair long, it was a pain because that area after two days I would have to wash it because that area would hurt because that part of the hair didn’t wanna lay down and I wanted to do its own thing and it created pain in that area, so my question is what should I do to tame it?
